A new poll out indicates that the country is clearly, massively, overwhelmingly progressive. While they talk about cutting so-called entitlement programs in Washington, the American people have completely different priorities.

When asked what's the first thing they would do to balance the budget, Americans had an unmistakably clear answer -- raise taxes on the rich. It came in number one by a mile, with a whopping 61 percent.

If that wasn't progressive enough, cutting defense spending came in number two, with 20 percent.

And if all of that wasn't clear enough, when asked about cutting Medicare, only 4 percent were in favor of it. Only 3 percent wanted to cut Social Security as a way to balance the budget.

I thought the country was center-right? That's what all of the pundits tell us 24/7 on television. What happened now? Do those answers look center-right to you? They look decidedly center-left to anyone with a pulse.

Washington is going to hate this news because they were just getting ready to cut people's Social Security. That's what the president's Deficit Commission suggested. That's what all of the Republicans are massively in favor of. That's what a lot of the Democrats are already saying is "necessary." All the meanwhile, they just gave a $407 billion tax cut to the richest people in the country.

Well, apparently the American people disagree with Washington's priorities. If the Democrats, Republicans and the president persist in trying to cut Social Security in the face of these numbers, then we will know that we have lost our democracy altogether. That the people in power couldn't give a damn what we want. That the take over of the American government by the corporations, the rich and the powerful is complete.

Every time you hear any politician or pundit say we have to cut Social Security or what they derisively call entitlement programs (you paid into them your whole life, that is why you are "entitled" to them), send them this poll. And ask them why they don't care at all about the will of the American people.

I've seen his stuff and the massively overwhelming vibe i get is that he is uber-partisan. On he his show when he finds a study he doesn't like he attacks it and when he finds one he does like he accepts it like the holy grail. I read he used to be a Republican, I wonder if back then he felt America was massively overwhelming conservative. I stopped listening to his show when he and his sidekick Ana "I don't what the "TheYoungTurks" really were" Kasparian attack that 14 year old bout Johnathan Krohn..that was more than I could take.

"This President has done nothing"- The WTF poll-when asked about Dems accomplishments Nov 2010 56% of democrats answered incorrectly of FACT..EvenRrepublicans answered beter getting 39% Wrong..most glaring was that Democrats believed that Obama had "raised Taxes" when in fact every working American had recieved a minimum of $500 savings from Obamas Stimulus..also Wall Street Journal noted that on Election day 2008 When asked "What do you expect from your next president" the # 1 answer was...."Aavoid a DEPRESSION" the second most popular was "Stop the War in Iraq"? Obama delivered Both . So it's Ironic that the voters seemed to think Obama had Done nothing f, when in fact Obama had delivered the top 2 demands already, ..a total contadiction to the concept Obama got nothing Done and a admission of Boldly Lying to the Voters.. "We need to supress the youth and latino vote" it backfired in Nevada when Latinos read between the lines of a GOP advertisment telling them NOT TO VOTE in this election ( a GOP official claimed it was a error in production?) and Had the Youth vote of 2008 just showed up 40% as they did in 2008,.,the republicans woud be losers..Adding that the Age 65+ vote broke a record with 28% showing up at the polls..the result notof anti-obama sentiment but the now debunked campaigh of instilling fear in the elderly via the ludacris idea Obama was appointing "DEATH PANELS"...

This is No Suprise at All..I think its what is so Frustrating and the NEXT STEP IS TO ASK YOURSELF???....
NOT:
1)why am I too lazy to care
2)maybe they know something I don't
3)this poll is a lie "They All Lie Equally"

the Question to ask yourself is WHY and Hoow is it the Right wing without any tepedation KNOWS you are not going to so much as make a wimper about it.They lied about Jobs as a Priority...they Fabricate certain Topics into the Number one topic..like the Deficit.. i's only important when it serves thier interests,,
THINK!: How Did They know I will be silent? What is it that lets them be Clearly Aware of my Apathy and I raise no protest rather allow them to write checks in your name, give opinions in your name and Blame crimes in your name...Again And Again...???

I failed to understand why the GOP talk about repealing health care yet they will not cut their on Gov't own health care.

The poll is little more than discussion-provoking water cooler fodder. To persuade us into thinking it is the True Will Of The American People is to commit 'argumentum ad populem.' QED.
01:04 PM on 01/05/2011
So sorry, but No. Put your unearned "QED" away.

The fallacy of argument from popularity is fallacious because it proposes that popularity is synonymous with validity... of the form that "More people accept the proposition that X is Y, therefore X is Y." The reason that it is fallacious, as a form of argument, is that the statement "X is Y" could easily be false, regardless of its popularity.

The difference between that and a poll to determine what voters' policy preferences are isn't even subtle. Nobody is talking about the validity of argument propositions; they are instead talking about measuring the relative political support expressed for various public policy preference options.

You got it half right...but since theres confusion lets go investigate.....The Republicans claim that the American people Voted for them because the American People did a 180 degree turn from one of the most involved and historic decisions in American History..its possible...
The Republicans claimed that the American people are Concerned about the DEFICIT....No offense to Americans but if you look at the Hot topics of the American voter..The Deficit is not anywhere near an issue and Economists around the world agree on 2 things. That as a bi-product of getting an economy back on its feet after a Massive Economic Downturn..SPENDING is Required..Kind of a No brainer..and Contrary to the GOP's Claim the Deficit has not gone up and it actually has hovered around the same level for 3 years..It dropped 20% in 2009....The observation made next was mentioned by senator Bernie Sanders "If you remove the ability to have the deficit rise it makes it impossible to take action regarding Job creation and stimulating the economy..the only remedy to that is to "raise Taxes" Thus Taxes and the Deficit are INJECTED into the debate intentionally..creating a brilliant yet decieving impression of a administration that is innefective.

Regressives desperately try to invalidate this poll claiming that it is a "60 minutes-Vanity fair" poll as if Vanity fair or CBS hired different pollsters than anybody else, or they claim that it is the result of the online non-scientific poll that CBS is conducting concurrently, which is also false.

The truth is that this is not the first poll that shows these results. Over the last few years, numerous polls have shown similar number of people choosing to tax the wealthy first. Just point your search engine in the right direction and you'll find them.
08:02 PM on 01/04/2011
The 60 min-Vanity Fair online poll is non-scientific by definition. Any online poll on a website that allows open traffic is non-scientific as a matter of fact. That most Americans support a progressive income tax is not in dispute.
11:08 PM on 01/04/2011
Cenk only discusses the results from the scientific poll on the phone.

This article just confirms what most political junkies already know. The ruling class is far more reactionary that the general public.

They want more and and want it at your expense. Duh !!!

Discussions regarding the breakdown of political ideologies across society can be interesting. However, I think we all know that the country is not "clearly, massively, overwhelmingly progressive." It doesn't matter whether or not we wish it was. In a "clearly, massively, overwhelmingly progressive" country, the Republicans wouldn't gain 64 house seats, the most in a midterm since 1938. Observing that the Tea Party was part of the political landscape in 2010 and had some degree of influence is the simple reality.

The main reason for my comment is in regards to the poll that you cite. The glaring inconsistency between the poll data and the election results is not a mystery. The poll is supposed to be based on phone calls but it also solicits online votes. You get this message after answering a quetion, "NOTE: This is not a scientific poll. The results above are for information purposes only, and should not be confused with the results of the scientific polls conducted by CBS News". Vanity Fair, "To answer the questions yourself, visit the 60 Minutes homepage at CBSNews.com." Of course sending the readers of Vanity Fair, 60 minutues and the New York Times (cited poll as well) to answer will result in liberal/progressive responses!

My point is not to debate political ideology at all. It would be the same as if Fox News cited a poll proclaiming the whole country is conservative done by the Wall Street Journal, Weekly Standard and National Review.

What makes you conclude that only the readers/viewers of Vanity Fair, 60 Minutes, and The New York Times were polled? I'm sure these organizations hire pollsters, who do representative sampling of the entire population. If their results are consistently skewed, no reputable organization will continue to hire them.
08:53 PM on 01/04/2011
CBS News did a telephone survey for the 60 minutes-Vanity Fair poll. If you follow the link, at the bottom of the page you'll find the following notation: "NOTE: This survey is based on a random sample of 1,097 respondents nationwide. It was conducted by telephone on August 27–31, 2009, by CBS News."

http://www.vanityfair.com/magazine/2009/11/60-minutes-poll200911?currentPage=2

There's no reason to assume that the results of the telephone survey are necessarily skewed or derived from a non-representative sample.

But there is also a 60 minutes-Vanity Fair online poll which you'll find here:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/09/25/60minutes/main5339910.shtml

The New York Times did a piece on the poll which you can read here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/28/business/media/28vanity.html

I would assume the online poll necessarily over represents Vanity Fair, 60 min and NY Times readers.

How do you get the greatest number of Republican seats in an election since 1938?

Simple; you vote in a President who runs on a progressive platform based on sweeping change of our political system.

He then ignores his progressive base and proceeds to run a largely center right administration with center right policy.

The progressive voter base then either does not turn out to vote due to disillusionment, or do turn out and vote for Republicans to show how displeased they are with the Progressive President the voted in.

This Republican win doesn't show this country is Center-Right. It does show how angry and fed up this nation is with politicians who lie.
07:15 AM on 01/06/2011
Excellent response. And I would add that if "Think Independent"'s argument held any water at all, then the 2008 election, in which Democrats won landslide victories and captured majorities in all 3 branches of government would prove that America was a very liberal nation. Or if tea baggers are to be believed, a very socialist nation. After all, a majority voted for the "socialist" Barack Obama.

The argument is made even more absurd when you consider that in the span of 2 years we went from a very liberal nation to a conservative nation.
04:46 PM on 01/04/2011
Who cares what the population thinks? America is run by the corporations. In fact, in America corporations have free speech rights. Also, even though 61% of people feel "progressive", they keep electing politicians who obey the will of the corporations that sponsor the PACs that fund their re-election campaigns. This poll is irrelevant.
07:23 AM on 01/05/2011
Americans care, or they should.

Yes, they keep electing Democrats and Republicans. Things won't change until that changes.
10:25 PM on 01/05/2011
I agree...but I unlike the others who disappeared???Was not involved in Politics nor a Huge Supporter of Obama n 08..But the fact he didn't go along with the typical crap and mainly when I saw OBSTRUCTIONISM..I knew he was not fairly given a chance..Ironically it got him in this mess..IRONIC that the only president to actually Debunk the the we are both the same Party has been Blamed for The Wall Street Bailout..it was a necessityt.also..It was a Bush Plan.Obama simply didn't advetise well and Obama LOST alot of Corporate War Money for the Mid Terms??Why?? because he pissed off Almost every top Donator and add to that there are FEW if any Liberals on wall street. This Mid Term The GOP broke all time records for ANY election much of it from the Companies Obama Saved?? only 79 people made up 1/2 of the Donations made to the GOP...Dems had 13 milling donaromd

Okay, so how will Progressives oust all the ultra-right-wingers on both sides of the party lines to save this country?

Cenk?

Reform campaign finance so that politicians are beholden to their voters and not to the PACs who fund their re-election campaigns.

I have been saying on this forum and other forums since 2008 the country is center-left, regardless of what all the right-wing pundits wish us to believe.

Polls during the 2008 campaign clearly reflected the US as center-left. It was there for all to see.

The GOP will realize that, yet again, in the 2012 elections when they, once again, get routed.

The United States isn't really a country in the traditional sense. Just think of it more as a loose collection of financial co operations.

No one really cares what is going down. What matters is that I'm getting mine.

The Wall street bankers want our money so Obama is going to compromise with the republicans and give it to them on a silver platter with all the trimmings so he can be elected in 2012. Don't worry there will be a new program. 50 acres and a mule. It worked in the deep south didn't it? All are politics seem to be dictated from south of the Mason -Dixon line.

The Gallup poll tells us the country is center right in poll after poll after poll after poll not the pundits. 40% conservative and 20% liberal in poll after poll after poll

Except that people don't know what's a conservative or a liberal, especially after decade of the corporate media demonizing the term 'liberal'.
