Why the Christian Right Doesn't Want to Fight Cervical Cancer

How patently absurd is it that these religious clerics would try to tell us how we should have sex?

The title of this piece might seem hyperbolic. How could the Christian Right really be against fighting cancer? How could any decent human being be against that? That doesn’t make sense. Well, I agree that it doesn’t make sense, but that’s never stopped them before. And as far as being decent human beings – they don’t even come close.

An article that ran in the Washington Post this week will blow you away. Here it is. In plain view, some of the Christian fundamentalists in this country are arguing against a vaccine that would nearly eliminate cervical cancer. This would save the lives of over 3,000 women in America every year. What kind of barbarians would even consider being against this vaccine?

Apparently, the ones that call themselves Christian. My co-host, Ben Mankiewicz calls them the un-Christian Right because their actions are so consistently deplorable and against what appear to be the peaceful and forgiving teachings of the New Testament. Whether they’re real Christians or not, I’ll leave up to you. But what is clear is that they value their religious beliefs more than they value your life.

They’re willing to let all those women die for their ideology. And what is their ideology – no sex at all costs! What a bunch of backwards puritan zealots. Really, you’re going to be able to stop sex? They tell us they know the only way we are allowed to have sex – within the confines of a marriage and to only one person for our entire lives.

Yeah, that’s your opinion. And a pretty ridiculous one at that. But if you want to confine yourself to monogamy and no pre-marital orgasms of any sort, that’s no problem. It’s not for me, but hey it’s a free country. Go right ahead. But when you cross the line and you try to mandate that for all of us, then I have no patience for you.

How patently absurd is it that these religious clerics would try to tell us how we should have sex? With no due respect, get the fuck out of our bedrooms.

But this isn’t just about controlling our sex lives anymore. This is a matter of life and death. Now they’ve gone way past acceptable. Letting over 3,000 women die of cervical cancer each year because you think it might lead to promiscuity and pre-marital sex? This is the point where your religious fanaticism ceases to be anachronistically amusing and becomes downright dangerous.
