El Regalo de Mi Madre -- My Mother's Gift

Posted: 05/12/2012 11:57 am

This Mother's Day, naturally, I think about the gifts my mother has given me over the years. My mother, Maria Teresa, had five children (in order): my sister Mireya, me, Nora, Monica, and my brother Erick. I look back now and can't imagine what a struggle it must have been for her. She and my father both worked, but even so, we lived in very poor circumstances. We didn't have much money. My brother and sisters and I slept in the same bed, and I don't know how my parents were able to put food on the table and still take such good care of us.

My mother worked as a seamstress. She would do sewing work and would design and sew costumes for Carnaval in Mazatlán. It was tiring work but she still managed to make the time to show us kids how important we were to her. It could not have been easy. My brother Erick remembers sitting by her side as she sewed for hours and she would give him empty spools from the thread she was using, so he could make racecars and play while she worked.

Now living in Los Angeles, and seeing these "real housewives" shows on TV, it really shows what a different life we had. My mom didn't go to the mall. She didn't come home with shopping bags full of new shoes. She didn't go to the spa. She didn't have a trainer or an assistant. If she had any extra money or any extra time, it went to us. I don't remember her buying anything for herself. Or taking time for herself. Everything she had she gave to us.

And as a kid, I wasn't easy. My brother Erick can tell you about my martial-arts phase when I was studying judo and worshiping Bruce Lee and using my brothers and sisters as punching bags for practice. I'm sure having dogs follow me around all the time wasn't easy either. Once, she gave me money to take Erick to the barbershop to get him a haircut. Instead I practiced my early dog-grooming techniques and groomed him myself. He had to wear a hat for weeks and my mom was furious.

But my mom never gave up on me. When I told her I wanted to be the best dog trainer in the world, she believed in me and thought I could do it. There was no way a short kid from Mexico was going to become anything. And there are a lot of kids all over the world who don't become anything, because their parents don't believe they can, even if they could. My parents believed. You can't imagine the power of that gift, and it doesn't cost a nickel.

Not long ago, my mom and my sister Monica came and prepared some food for my office pack. They made Tacos Dorados de papa y de res -- tacos with potatoes and meat. Very simple food. And I know everyone says it, but it's true -- the secret ingredient is love. We never had sushi and Kobe beef growing up, but my mom's hot dogs and pancakes with syrup and marmalade will taste as good to me as anything that any famous chef can create. She devoted her life to caring for us, nurturing us.

I think my mom was the original pack leader. She kept these five kids fed and loved, and now that we're gone, I think it's funny that she has five dogs. Two Chihuahuas, a dachshund, a poodle, and a Yorkie. I guess five's the magic number for her pack. My brother and sisters and I can argue about which dog replaced who.

I try to talk to my mother every day (and if I don't, she calls me!). She has taught me tolerance, patience, caregiving, and unconditional love. She was the original calm and assertive person in my life. Someone said they wanted to be as good a person as their dog thinks they are. I agree, but above else, I want to be as good a person as my mother thinks I am.

In Mexico, Thursday, May 10, was Mother's Day. I called up my mother and my grandmother and sang to them over the phone. It was spectacular. I'm not sure my grandmother who wears a hearing aid could appreciate the full performance, but she knows I called.

This Mother's Day, I hope everyone who is lucky enough to still have their mother with them takes some time to tell her how much she's meant to you. And if your mother has passed on, take this day to reflect on the gifts she gave you and what you can do to make yourself the person she believed in. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms.

Stay calm and assertive,

Cesar

Dog kicker. Watch Millan kick dogs, abusing them to make them obey. He should never be allowed to be around animals.

My husband is from Mexico and a big fan of your work as is our whole family. I read your story to him, we both enjoyed it very much, in fact I made potatoes tonight and he was just telling me how they would be perfect in taquitos. He said that your Taco Dorados is what he was trying to tell me about. Your mother sounds beautiful. So from our German Shorthair and the pack, all the best to you and yours.

ok mothergrace..whatever you are reading..you are misinformed....caesar does NOT kick his dogs...he responds to them by touch...its like if someone poked you with their finger to get your attention..caesar sometimes uses a foot...sometimes with the finger..to snap them out of their unstable state

Apparently you have never seen the dozens of example where Millan KICKS DOGS. Do a You Tube search. It is NOT like poking someone with a finger.

Please DO NOT defend this abuser.

Thanks for sharing your memories of your Mom Cesar, she sounds like a wonderful, inspiring, Mother.
I am the mother of 3 grown sons and now that they have all left the house I am raising our K-9 kids. Adopted a rescue female Anatolian mix in Dec,and a male mixed large breed pup on Easter, now to move on to finding me a third to add to the pack in honor of my 3 sons. Perhaps you could help me find the right memeber, hint hint! I too have always loved dogs and they seem to always gravitate to me, even the ones whose owners say they don't like anyone, they come right to me amazing their owners. I have a neighbor who calls me the female dog whisperer, I find it an honor to be so K-9 connected and I truly love your advice, would love to meet you someday since I find you to be such a wonderful inspiration, which was in no doubt nurtured by your loving Mother!
Thanks again for all you do for K-9 owners everywhere!

Wonderful story, your mother sounds like a wonderful person. Thanks for sharing. I'm a big fan and a first time puppy owner and the basic concepts and attitude taught on your show has had a greater impact on me personally more than any HP blogger. In LA I see angst-filled dogs walking their owners everywhere, I see dog walkers at dog parts plea and beg their dogs to stop fighting, and I have countless friends and acquaintances who rarely walk their dogs (if ever). My dog is happy and loving thanks to your principles.

That blogger should be sued for libel. And you should be ashamed of yourself.

There is film footage to back up these claims.

The people who should be ashamed are the people that kick dogs and the people who support them.
09:57 PM on 05/12/2012
I agree. I comes off as complete jealousy. The videos they claim are of Ceasar abusing dogs are usually "red zone" dogs where their owners have completely ruined the dogs, and they have called Ceasar into a very dangerous situation expecting him to do a miracle. Then the wannabes criticize him.

Just what we need a "mother" with no "grace" to hi-jack a perfectly good Mother's Day post.

in a world of fake, that was very heart-felt and sincere! Happy Mother's Day, Maria Teresa! You did a great job!

Such a wonderful and loving tribute to his Mom. Watching him on TV and his kind manner, there is not doubt that his mother's love has reached Cesar's good heart.
