Try explaining your college in a few words to someone who isn't in-the-know. It's a delicate business. Why not do the obvious and compare your institution of higher learning with a popular rapper?

Here are my favorite examples... What do you think? Have better ideas? Come up with your own, and I'll add the best.

This title would have made more sense if analogies were still on the SAT. But they're not.

West Virginia University: Lil John--Crunk 24/7.
01:25 AM on 09/14/2010
Oxford -- Rakim (The Godfather of it all)
Stanford -- Tupac Shakur (Best of the West)
Harvard -- Notorious B.I.G. (Best of the East)
Yale -- Jay-Z (1-2 with Harvard, but seemingly always coming in second-best amongst collective wisdom)
Columbia -- Nas (Amongst the all-time best, but always an afterthought when discussing the pinnacle)
Notre Dame - Big Daddy Kane (Like the Golden Dome, flamboyant, full of imagery, yet never recognized as amongst the greatest)
Smith -- Lauryn Hill (This woman isn't afraid to make a statement, no matter how controversial it may be)
Dartmouth -- Mos Def (Strong message, yet still demonstrating desire for fame and nationwide recognition)
Amherst -- Wu-Tang Clan (Like part of the Five Colleges consortium, you can enjoy the entire group or individual artists)
Brown -- Kanye West (Occasionally strong message often marred with lack of focus and drug binges)
Tulane -- Lil Kim (Makes infrequent splashes in news / music, some talent but definitely not top tier, and demonstrates strong tendency to show her boobs)
Swathmore -- The Roots (Represent Philly, do it very well, very talented, yet often wonder "who?" amongst weaker-versed Hip Hop consumers)
Wellesley -- Queen Latifah (So much poetic nature and self respect, with no recognition)
Richmond -- Farnsworth Bentley (Seen often with top tier artists and businessmen like P.Diddy, yet lacks enough substance to be in music industry outside music video cameos -- all while wearing a bow-tie)
Skidmore -- Canibus (Enough said)

Whack at the Jay Z and Harvard...he tries to hard to convince himself and other that he is the so-called "best". Not buying it. He is some second tier school that people settle for when they can't get into their first choice. Example we settle for Jay because Pac and Biggie are gone for ever.

Tulane -- Infrequent news / music appearances, strong skills yet definitely not top tier, and frequently revealing her boobs

Unique, groundbreaking, talented yet somewhat unpredictable.

Nas = Notre Dame.
Established, Astute, and lacking athletic vigor. (Oxford Comma did you catch it?)

Common: Georgetown; earnest, socially-conscious and well-regarded, but tries too hard and is ultimately kind of lame.

Pac is worldwide and Biggie is the one that depends on what coast you're from. Most of the people that think Biggie is better than Pac are from NY. But lets face it, Pac was much more than just a rapper. No way Pac should be limited to the West coast as Stanford and Biggie as Oxford. Pac is much more well known around the world. He can be seen as a symbol of struggle, and the ability to over come that. And how can he leave Nas off this list. And calling Lil Wayne "Genuinely brilliant". Thats a joke right. Brilliance and Lil Wayne should not be in the same sentence. @Eric14 get over your self for real. Cant get into much international rap, and underground hip-hop holds it's self back. There are :millionaire celebrities" that still do represent what Hip-Hop is. Not all but some. And there are plenty of underground MC that just don't get it either.

I agree.

American pop rap degenerated into techno c-rap. The real rap is underground or far away. The over-sexualized, self-obsessed nonsense that comes out from these millionaire celebrities is witness to their decadent apolitical materialism. This is rap:

An American art form of liberation has been successfully exported, and at home, popularized and debased. Pop rap artists are as bad as right-wing republicans - destroyers of culture, alienators of people, money-obsessed degenerates.
03:34 PM on 09/07/2010
There are pop rappers the same way that there are pop rock stars. You can still find good rap that is mainstream if you look. Think The Roots, Common, Talib, Lupe Fiasco, etc.
