This is a situation that is going to require some intense scrutiny. Both Zardari and Karzai are suspect individuals, to begin with. Reigning in their more nefarious activities and involvements, I think, should be part and parcel, with any provision of hardware and support for which they are asking.

Another thing. I don't hear anything said about what, if anything, is being required of ,or asked for, on the part of the Indian Government. At the very least, it would seem, it would be extremely helpful if India could be asked to agree to a military stand-down, relative to the friction and massing of troops on their shared border. A relieving of tensions on their border would effectively release troops, so as to be used on the border with Afghanistan.

Just sayin'.

Would US leave the border unguarded if terrorists were 60 miles from Mexico city.To this add other problems like terrorist connections in the govt. and army, also a complete idiot for a president and a totally bankrupt and desperate nation. Pakistan has proved to be untrustworthy in the 60 yrs of its existence. Why would you expect India to trust it now in this situation. Have you thought about this my friend? No really.. think about it.Don't just say.

There have been quite a few comments on this website as to why India's not doing enough. Here's why.

To the North of India lies Nepal. Taken over by a communist insurgency. There's no Prime Minister, and there are calls on the President and the Army Chief to resign. The nation is in chaos.

To the East of India lies Bangladesh. Recently come out of nearly two years of rule by a military junta. Floods, refugees, and a full-blooded Islamist movement (the Jamaat) that wants to turn the nation into a theocracy.

To the Far East of India lies Myanmar (Burma). Under martial law for the last 47 years.

To the South of India lies Sri Lanka. Insurgency by the Tamil ethnic minority against the majority Sinhala population. Terror attacks on a daily basis by the LTTE terrorist organisation.

To the Far North (and Far North East) of India lies China. Enough said.

To the West lies Pakistan. With whom four wars were fought. Where terrorist groups operate with relative impunity, crossing the border and taking innocent lives. And then there's the Taliban. And Al Qaeda. And further on, Afghanistan.

So tell me again, do you really recommend India withdraw its armies from its borders?

Considering the neighborhood the Indians are stuck in, it's a crying shame that we don't turn out to be xenophobes.
