Bigoted Obama Waffles; Bigoted Values Voter Conference

?>

The boxes of Obama Waffles for sale at the 2008 Values Voter Summit were certainly racist and offensive, and conference organizers did the right thing by shutting down the sales booth in their exhibit hall.

It was alternative journalists, including those working for Political Research Associates and People for the American Way, that first alerted the mainstream media to the offensive caricatures on the boxes with online posts from the conference.

While reviewing the caricatures, this post will also analyze the "humorous" text on the waffle box, and compare it to the content of conference speakers at the Values Voter Summit. Was the Obama Waffle box an anomaly in this Christian Right event?

The booth was open for business around noon on Saturday when the story broke. Boxes of Obama Waffles for selling for $10, and business was brisk.

Here are photos of two of the advertising panels at the booth. It was hard not to see the stereotyping.:

Is there a White racist subtext woven into the history of the Christian Right? While many Christian Right leaders have made efforts to involve Black pastors and stressed racial reconciliation, there is little talk of racial justice that would require institutional changes in America.

Religion scholar Randall Balmer revealed in his recent book that the energy to build the Christian Right in the late 1970s, often attributed to anti-abortion sentiments, was actually triggered by fears that segregated White Christian private schools would have their tax exempt status revoked by Jimmy Carter's Internal Revenue Service. Read more here.

Other racist stereotypes about Blacks were featured on the Obama Waffles box; the
Rev. Jeremiah Wright made an appearance on the side:

Rev. Jeremiah Wright

The caricature of the Reverend Jeremiah Wright includes "Popular Sayings: 'God***America' and "Made in the US of KKA"

There is a side panel recipe for "Barry's Bling Bling Waffle Ring" that features a "Recipe Rap" that begins with "Yo, B-rock here droppin' waffle knowledge" with the rest of the ditty written in such an irritating White caricature of Black rap that even a White 1920s vaudeville blackface crooner would be embarrassed.

The Obama Waffles box also includes stereotypes (reflecting fears) about Mexicans...

Obama Waffles anti-Mexican

Under the caricature of Obama as a Mexican, there is a recipe card for "Open Border Fiesta Waffles." The recipe card depicts a perforated border between the U.S.A. and Mexico. The text under this says the "greatest danger of all is to allow walls to divide us."

At the Values Voter Summit there was a breakout session on "The Double Threat To Our National Security: Illegal Immigration," featuring Colin Hanna, president of Let Freedom Ring, a group calling for a high security border fence between the U.S. and Mexico.

The workshop pulsated with fears that immigration by Mexicans was bringing in waves of crime and disease--and perhaps a few terrorists.

The recipe card on the Obama Waffles box including ingredients such as goats milk and jalepeno peppers, and advises as a "Tip: While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language." The "Recommended Serving" is "4 or more illegal aliens."

Conference lead-off speaker Lou Dobbs, a vociferous anti-immigrant polemicist, posed for a picture at the booth while holding a box of Obama Waffles. He is reported to have said "My wife will love this," or something similar. Hard to confirm since the original photo and quote have vanished from the Internet.

There also were stereotypes (reflecting fears) about Muslims...

The box top features Obama with stereotypic Muslim headgear and the admonition: "Point box toward Mecca for tastier waffles."

Obama Waffles - Islamophobic

At the Values Voter Summit there was a breakout session on "The Double Threat To Our National Security: Radical Islam," featuring Frank Gaffney, President and CEO of the Center for Security Policy. According to Right Web:

Gaffney says that today's main threat to peace and security is "Islamofascism," which is a terms he says "makes clear that the war is about much more than Iraq and Afghanistan" and includes those countries--namely, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Syria, Pakistan, North Korea, China, Cuba, Venezuela, and South Africa--which provide direct or indirect support for the Islamofascists "in their death struggle with us" (Jim Lobe, "Neo-Con Superhawk Earns His Wings on Port Flap," February 26, 2006). Read more here

Gaffney's presentation at the Values Voter Summit echoed these xenophobic assertions.

The environment?

The side panel recipe for "Barack's Belgium Beauties" suggests that "Environmentally conscious consumers should pay two ozone-offset carbon credits to Al Gore's GreenWorld Fund. On the bottom of the box, is a "Clip&Save" coupon for "8 Al Gore Green Perks."

Gore Coupon

At the Values Voter Summit, there were suggestions that global warming was an over-rated concern, if not a liberal hoax.

Throughout the conference, speakers brought up criticisms of Barack Obama similar or even identical to the text on the Obama Waffles box, ridiculing Obama for talking about being a "citizen of the world," or misspeaking about "57 states." Stopping abortion was a central issue at the conference, and the box text, written as if by Barack Obama, reads "When Michelle and I mix up a batch for our family, we only use eggs gently coaxed from their mothers to assure the hen her freedom of choice."

Both John Kerry and Michelle Obama had a role to play

John Kerry{ }Michelle Obama

The mainstream media missed the real story of the Obama Waffles...that the text on the box was offensive, but so was the content of the Values Voters Summit itself.

Christians with a focus upon the family, huh? For people who claim to believe the Bible, I wonder if they ever read what the apostle Paul wrote to the Galatians : Gal 3:28 " There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." [NIV]

Obama Waffles: The Breakfast of Klansmen...

I guess that's who the Republican Party most identifies with these days.

I know for a fact that there are many Christians who disagree with the racist homophobic xenophobic sexist bigoted views of Christian fringes like these.
The only problem is that they are not as vocal. So, on MSM, we only hear echos of these lunatics.
I remember, during the start of the criminal war that GWB waged on Iraq, there was an interview with a priest who was assembling bombs as many women did during the WWII. He said he prays that these bombs don't hurt our boys. Implying it's ok if these bombs decimated women and children and other innocent victims. Needless to say he made me sick.
God is hijacked by the crazy, the loony, the self righteous, the dumb, the nut job, and the dweeb.
So God help us all.

In these days of deregulated 500 fortunes being bailed out with by capitalist state welfare, what is even more shocking is that that the site that is supposed to be a mere cartoonish lapooning of the absurdity of political posturing is in fact sponsored by a very real multinational cereal corporation. This makes the days of John Kerry look whimsical indeed. If this attitude foretells more of the same, I really don't think there is really much worth saving no matter who wins in November. Apparently there are some demons we simply cannot escape.

I'm a Christian and I tell you I am appalled by this. These people HAVE NO VALUES. PERIOD.

It is amazing that people who call themselves christians are so full of hate and bigotry. Ghandi was right when he said that christians make christianity look bad. I do not believe that these people are christians. Unless of course they believe that Jesus Christ was hateful and a bigot.

Sadly, this is what has turned many people away from religion. They see that most wars, hatred, and bigotry occur in the name of religion. It's sad that those who pervert religion give the others a bad name...the perfect example being that many Americans think Muslims as a whole are evil, terrible people.
06:11 PM on 09/17/2008
Arent Christians supposed to be accepting of all people, regardless of race?? Hmmmm, not very Christ-like I say...
12:28 PM on 09/17/2008
I think this speaks volumes for anyone who says RACE is not a factor in this political contest. This is just a sad state of where we are as Americans. Here we are in an oil crisis, housing crisis, war crisis and economic crisis....and to get your person nominated you spew hate and old stereotypes and fear into the American public to get them to vote for your side. Or worse yet, it appears to be working...according to the propaganda...I mean the polls.

It will be nothing short of a miracle for Obama to win this election with this type of hate lurking in the bowels of the Republican Party.

This is a not a popularity contest, this is our lives. This is for the sake of our future. This is our children's future. Vote on the issues and the issues your party

I can agree with you, but our country was built on slavery and unfortunately so many people have really forgotten what the Battle of Gettysburg was all about. It also saddens me, that even the media falls right into the racism stance. Our country supports it in hidden ways. I wonder if most Americans are proud to say I come from a biggoted country.

The Battle of Gettysburg was actually over resources and attrition. But it was turned into a massacre because of incompetence. Overall, I don't care what white people tell themselves to feel better, the Civil War was basically over slavery. It was "states rights" to own slaves and drive the Southern economy. And it was "Southern Heritage" to keep blacks in their place. So no matter how they shade it blacks would have STILL been slaves if the war was never fought and if the South had won. Blacks in Texas didn't find out they were free until 2 months after the war ended. Indeed, Southern slavery continued under corporations until 1941. It was called "neo-slavery". Jim Crow, Black Codes, lynchings, sharecropping and the KKK maintained all the vestiges and societal dictates of slavery without the actual ownership of people. Americans have tried to bury that history and shame anyone who brings it up. But the truth always shows up.

This type of hatred not only lurks in the bowels of the Republican Party (but they're as good a scapegoat as any right now). Racism and bigotry are very deep, and are woven throughout the fabric of our society.

But that, in and of itself, is not the end of the story. Some are willing to admit that it's there, and take an active role in eradicating it from within their own selves and "circle of influence."

Obama winning the election just MIGHT take a miracle. But the God I serve is not short on miracles.

It troubles me how some have perverted the faith, and sometimes do terrible things in the name of Christianity. But having grown up in America, I've learned to separate GOD and all that He stands for; from country/politics--a separate entity; from traditions/practices/prejudices of PEOPLE.

As a Christian, I'm called to learn to love these idiots. It's the only way I can even such insulting behavior. It's a struggle . . .

Not surprising, but sad. It's sad that the same people that profess to be Christians are so hateful. They can't talk about the real issues so the attack his wife and his race. They even manage to squeeze Mexicans in, as if the Mexicans that come here illegally represent all Mexicans. They're evil.
In my mind, Lou Dobbs is a hypocrite and when he says 'independent view', I just want to puke. It would be great to find the picture. I ignore Hannity all together, he's a waste.

Sean Hannity was there and nobody is reporting that. I bet he picked up a box too.

the only MSM who reported this story was CNN

and they said "SOME find Obama Waffles offensive."

CNN was also the only frontpage with info about Palin's refusal to cooperate with investigators
but they said
"Palin won't cooperate with "TAINTED" investigation."

As a Christian I am appalled at these so called "values" heathen. They represent no parts of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that I am aware of. I wish they would crawl back under the rock they slivered out from under. To quote the words of the Jesus they profess to love...."Depart from me...I never knew you!"

President Obama next 8 years!
