The Good Wife Recap: Alicia Takes -- And Leaves The Stand

Posted: 01/29/2012 10:05 pm

Note: The following contains spoilers if you have not seen Season 3, Episode 14 of CBS's "The Good Wife," entitled, "Another Ham Sandwich."

It's now safe to say whenever "The Good Wife" has an episode with the phrase "ham sandwich" in it, it's going to be a stellar offering. Like last year's "Ham Sandwich," Season 3's "Another Ham Sandwich" was filled to the brim with classic moments that make "The Good Wife" one of the most entertaining shows on TV.

When I watched the episode at my desk earlier this week, I warned my colleagues that there would be gasping. Boy, was there gasping. The dancing, the phone calls, the testimony ... everything clicked. There's so much to talk about.

Let's start with Julianna Margulies' pitch-perfect performance when Alicia finds out the grand jury could indict Will. It was like we knew what was happening inside her, her heart falling deep into the pit of her stomach. Diane's refusal to tell Alicia what to do -- knowing that Alicia would do whatever possible -- was a very nice character moment between the two of them.

GLAC. As much as I love Amy Sedaris and Alan Cumming as actors, this storyline was just so jarring when compared to the intensity of the grand jury testimony. Something was just off for me. It didn't click with the rest of it (although hearing Eli call Alicia a gay icon -- it's true, she is! "Suffering made you iconic." -- was almost enough to make up for the meh plot). Even though we got to see round two of Eli Gold vs. David Lee, it just wasn't the best. Although more Caitlin (Anna Camp), would be welcome.

Peter Florrick feels the heat. Alicia brought out the wine -- yes, viewers noticed she was drinking red wine with Peter and not a white wine -- in an effort to end the investigation into Will. It didn't go very well. "My god, you have changed," Peter told Alicia. "I used to be able to tell when you lied." Their conversation was a long time coming.

Absolutely adored how Diane turned the tables during her testimony; I was giggling with delight. Then David Lee did the exact same thing, totally throwing Wendy Scott-Carr for a loop. Will pushed her over the top and that's when she went after Alicia.

About Alicia's time on the stand ... Even though it was heavily promoted by CBS, and for good reason, I was still gasping away. "The witness has not been excused!" "You are out of control." Cue the gasps. Was very surprised, but delighted, when Cary tried to stop Wendy's line of questioning. I was hoping he'd walk out of the room in protest, but the fact that he said anything to begin with shows the character evolution Cary has gone through. When Alicia finally makes it outside, she immediately thinks of her kids learning about her fling. At first, I thought that reaction was selfish, but it makes sense. She's a lioness, protecting her cubs from her own indiscretions.

Kalinda saves the day. I knew her "betrayal" wasn't without a plan and it was SO great to see everything blow up in Dana's face. You don't use Kalinda; Kalinda uses you. To top it all off, her call to Alicia at the end of the episode was very cute. Alicia's hesitation in thanking Kalinda, obviously because of her returning friendship feelings, was probably enough to last all the Kalicia shippers out there for weeks.

"I like that pin." I cannot rave enough about Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni. She's a force to be reckoned with, but I wish we got to see her knock Wendy down a few more pegs.

Gasp count: Seven with one "Oh boy" and an "Oh shit!"

Some other things/quotes:

"You fooled me?"
"Yeah. Go ahead, hit me. It'll make you feel better."
SMACK

"If she's getting some, great." -Random member of the grand jury.

Diane and Will dancing, again. Amazing. They are the perfect couple.

"I haven't been the best of moms. I want to change all that. I think I should take a week off work and we should go on vacation." I hope Owen is going with them!

Did you like the episode? Do you think we've seen the last of Wendy Scott-Carr? Where do you think "The Good Wife" will go now that the investigation is over?

"The Good Wife" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on CBS

Every since this show came on the air i have been a huge fan. And i was so glad when Alicia stopped being a doormate, when she kicked Peter out.... but latey this: I am such a bad mother for having a life, you poor kids need me so the only thing i can possibly have in my life is you, is driving me CRAZY. At least when she was having an affair with Will she was doing something for herself for once... I think her character is moving backwards..... HEY, its 2012, you can have a career, a lover and kids....... And you can do it without guilt,,,, Really you can!!!!

The fact that two African-American females are viewed as the main villains of this episode really makes my skin crawl. I didn't realize that "THE GOOD WIFE" would become this racist. Or perhaps I should say . . . the fans. I don't think I can watch this show for a while after this.

i loved most of the episode save for the eli gold and moment with his competition... i thought the sex theme was silly and brought nothing to their professional rivalry. otherwise i found there were three great scenes: when alicia walked out and said "arrest me" knowing that was not going to happen given her standing as florricks wife, kalinda telling the furious dana to slap her and she does , and peter florrick telling wendy scott to leave his office... great show just as good as anything on cable

Loved those scenes too!

That was a great episode! But, I almost feel like it gave away too much of the plot tension, even though a third of the season is still left! What are they going to go for the 7 or 8 episodes?

It seems that all of the story lines are coming to neat resolutions. Will is saved (unless, I guess, if Wendy pursues the fight). Alicia and Kalinda seem to be getting back on good terms. The firm is in good shape. Alicia has had deeper realizations about her role as a mom.

What's left? Are they going to revive the whole "Is-Alicia-Going-To-Choose-Will-Or-Peter" story? Come on! Give us something new! I almost feel like Peter needs to announce a run for Governor in the season finale to give us a new story line in Season 4.

clearly wendy scott carr made it clear that peter was not safe and i am pretty sure she will not forget how peter florrick treated her. this is a vindictive lady... i think family continues to be alicias main concern and this will always come between her and will.

Love the show, and particularly last night's episode. I have been wondering, though, if a Grand Jury could act like that, throwing questions at the prosecutor.

Amazing return to top form last night for GW. There's nothing on right now that can even touch this show.

i hope we've seen the end of wendy. too many bad people now with cary, childs, peter, dana, then you add in the worlds MOST annoying person wendy, and it's too much.

i think the "validate parking" comment was the perfect sendoff for her. it also redeemed peter a bit in my eyes. he's got the classic it's good for me to cheat but not for you thing going that is frustrating and well played.

is there hope for cary? i want to slap him nearly every episode. i think they've done a good job showing us that little bit of him that's not a bad guy. wonder if he'll come around to the light!!

it was a goooooood show and i can't wait to see what's next.

I think Cary has always been a "good guy" but he is competitive and was angry that Alicia got to stay at Lockhart/Gardner even though he made them more money that year. He fights hard, but when it comes to ethics, he tends to be on the side of right.

I was actually looking forward to seeing Kalinda being put on the stand instead of Alicia.....:D She so easily could have turned the tables on WSC towards Peter because she knows ALL the secrets. I still remember how she testified for Peter by testifying against him for Glenn Childs. That was brilliant. Alicia walking out and daring WSC to arrest her was the best part of followed by Kalinda and Dana confrontation.....would love to see Kalinda use the slap later as evidence of being assaulted and getting Dana suspended ;-))

This is my favorite show, hands down! Just wish it didn't have to compete with whatever sports leads into it on Sunday nights. That has been very frustrating in addition to the change to Sunday night, almost as though CBS were trying to lose viewers. What gives with CBS? They've done this before with other great shows bounched all over the schedule until they got lost. At least, I've been able to watch the current weekly show on line.

Okey, nice try on Obama memos article; I agree with your succinct summation. The danger in presidential actions by committee is not having your own original thoughts or plan of action, thus allowing yourself to be led rather than leading. He has had to have tred a narrow path. Other than the controversial medical plan, I'd like to see what he is able to bring to the table in another four years using his learned experience.

Lame lame episode. I refuse to root for any of these characters.

Probably my favorite line was when Peter told Wendy to get out of his office. Or when he said his assistant would validate her parking. Haha

First things first. The cast of "The Good Wife" was robbed at the SAG Awards Sunday night. How can actors look at what these fellow actors do every week and not be impressed? "Boardwalk Empire"? Really?

TGW, for me, is a show that will rank as one of the best ever to air on broadcast television. The writing is so insightful. Nothing is left to chance. The dialogue is spare and smart. Enough to help the viewer understand the plot, but never too much. And it appears the writers are confident enough in the actors to let them connect the dots with an arched eyebrow, a glance, a shrug. It's such a shame that new episodes have been so few and far between.

I hope we get a few more years out of this cast and crew. I have just started watching the first season again on DVD and, even on repeated viewings, the show is always engaging. And, no, I am not a studio plant. Just a viewer who's grateful that there is still at least one reason to watch network television.

i agree but i hate its on on sundays the show is too good to be put on after all the sport delays... it deserves better..sometimes its the powers that be that helped destroy quality network viewing
