Courting Latin Crossovers

Hopefully your knowledge of our neighbors to the south is better than that of our benighted politicos, but still, we can all stand to learn more about this emerging tech power.

NYC rallies Latin American start-ups considering expansion

According to legend, then-Veep Dan Quayle concluded a 1989 trip to Latin America with the immortal words, "The only regret I have was that I didn't study Latin harder in school... " Hopefully your knowledge of our neighbors to the south is better than that of our benighted politicos, but still, we can all stand to learn more about this emerging tech power.

Well, now's your chance. Today marks the start of LatAm to NYC, part of the Economic Development Corporation's efforts to help foreign companies expand their business in New York. Thirty-four companies from eight Latin American countries will be here for a three-day tour and talk circuit meant to showcase the city's resources.

Among the delegates are Jogabo, a community platform that lets users find local soccer games looking for players. Jogabo also offers league and team management options, and could prove the killer app for New York's small but rabid fútbol fanatics.

Another LatAm to NYC participant, Taggify, allows websites to monetize specific content through contextual ads. Let's say you're featuring a photo of Lady Gaga in a prosciutto halter top. Taggify allows you to embed advertising on the image itself, so that daring readers can shop for similar, uh, clothing.

PulsoSocial hosted a cocktail party last night to welcome the entrepreneurs. A few tickets remain here, and don't forget to brush up on your Latin declensions.

Now go forth (and spin the globe).
