Build the Mosque on Ground Zero

What's Your Reaction:

I.F. Stone said freedom of religion means they can park in front of your house but you can't park in front of theirs. That was half a century ago, and the struggle between faith and urban planning hasn't gotten any more compelling since then, even with a Terror Mosque going up in the shadow of Ground Zero 9/11.

I have to confess, as a progressive, that I don't care one way or the other. I don't have a team in this game, and a man has only so much dudgeon, and I'm not going to waste mine defending someone's right to build a megachurch.

That said, everyone who's against the mosque is missing the point. It's not about honoring the memory of the last attack; it's about preventing the next. The problem isn't that the mosque is too close to the hole where they're building the Freedom Target; the problem is it's not close enough.

The Freedom Tower is the greatest geopolitical "Come and Get Me" since Roosevelt double-parked all those battleships at Pearl. If you're worried about a downtown construction site that's going to inspire terrorism, don't look at the Burlington Coat Factory. Look in the crater. Everyone who hates America is going to get up in the morning thinking of knocking the Freedom Tower down, then spend the day planning it, and go to sleep at night and dream they pulled it off.

Wouldn't you?

The only thing that might possibly deter them? The risk that their target could fall over and hit a mosque.

The Qur'an, like the real bible God gave America, is full of loopholes about who you can and can't kill, but it's pretty bad for a Muslim to kill another Muslim, even if they're aiming for the building next door. Look:

And it does not behoove a believer to kill a believer except by mistake, and whoever kills a believer by mistake, he should free a believing slave, and blood-money should be paid to his people unless they remit it as alms; but if he be from a tribe hostile to you and he is a believer, the freeing of a believing slave (suffices), and if he is from a tribe between whom and you there is a covenant, the blood-money should be paid to his people along with the freeing of a believing slave; but he who cannot find (a slave) should fast for two months successively: a penance from Allah, and Allah is Knowing, Wise.

Think that's not serious? You try blowing up an office building then fasting for two months per victim.

And that's if you do it by accident. Killing another Muslim on purpose? For that you go straight to hell, forever. It's really serious. Like our book's rules against strong intoxicating drink, mixing textiles and eating owls.

That's why we want as many Muslim houses of worship around lower Manhattan as was can possibly get. A ring of mosques, if possible. A wall of mosques. The taller the better.

And one huge, round mosque, on top of the Freedom Tower itself, rotating slowly.

On top of the rotating mosque? Two penthouse apartments. In Penthouse A: Muhammad Ali. Penthouse B: Omar Sharif. I don't care if he says he's Catholic. The president says he's Presbyterian. People say a lot of things.

It's beside the point.

Like whether or not freedom of religion is in the Constitution. I don't care about the law, or justice, or fairness, or even consistency. I'm talking about keeping America safe.

Sorry, "Keeping America Safe."

Chris, there was already a mosque near ground zero which has survived both WTC attacks. And WTC was attacked regardless. You should have looked that up before you wrote this article because it means your whole article is pointless.

Some people don't quite see the humor and irony in it all and are reacting as if this were a demand to alter current building plans.

It's a much needed breath of fresh air in a hurricane of a lot of hot air being blown about on this issue.

Conservatives don't do irony. They don't really do humor either, but they do laugh at all the snide and hateful things they say.

Welcome to Newt, Sarah and Pamela Geller’s America:

“A cabdriver was attacked by a knife-wielding passenger who made anti-Muslim remarks on Tuesday evening, the police said.

The passenger, Michael Enright, 21, of Brewster, N.Y., hailed the cab at Second Avenue and East 24th Street around 6 p.m. Tuesday, the police said. Twenty blocks north, they said, he slashed and stabbed the 43-year-old driver in his throat, face and arm.
According to the taxi workers’ alliance, Mr. Sharif’s fare started the ride asking him in a friendly way if he was Muslim, whether he was observing Ramadan, and how long he had been in the United States.

After falling silent for a few minutes, the passenger began cursing and screaming, and then yelled, “Assalamu alaikum — consider this a checkpoint!†and slashed Mr. Sharif across the neck, and then on the face from his nose to his upper lip, the alliance said. (“Assalamu alaikum†— “peace be with you†— is a traditional Muslim greeting.)†- NYT

Except Al Qaeda doesn't care about mosques, they have killed more Muslims than the 3000 on 9/11. They don't care that it is Ramadan and people are fasting, they are blowing people up in Pakistan, Iraq, and Afganistan right now.

"I have to confess, as a progressive, that I don't care one way or the other."
Then why write an article? And is that progress, to not get involved and keep out of peoples problems? Let's hope our government doesn't get too 'progressive'.

Park 51 at the pit would paint the target. Your response is silly and not too bright...(alQaeda is just as subversive as the Republican assault on the twin towers of our democracy - the Constitution and Capitalism).
aQ has suicide-bombed crowded moderate Muslim shrines in particular.
Moderate Islamic religious culture is their worst enemy.

I like the counter current slant of the article, but I'm not sure terrorists would really be deterred by the proximity of a mosque.

great article . . thank you for some sanity

Since when has the left cared about religious freedom?

While this writer of this column has an idea and great intentions he fails to realize this single point...Extremist Muslims do not care how many of their own "kind" they injure or kill as they would be considered innocent bystanders...Martyrs! So building the Mosque by the Freedom Towers would not work. Additionally, to even bow down to this idea of the mosque construction out of fear that the Freedom towers will be hit again just illustrates how weak America has become. Dear Sir, straighten your backbone out, we as Americans will not bow down to terrorist or extremist fears and actions. If they want to blow up the Freedom Towers, let them try, a world of hurt awaits them; ok maybe not with this President in office, but when I replace him, since I am the 1st registered Republican Candidate for President in 2012, I will remind everyone to include other Nation’s why you don’t “test†America.
I do understand you point of view, Mr. Writer, remember we are the beacon of hope and freedom and will always be under attack by those who are jealous and ignorant of the “American†way of life and the freedoms we represent. What message are they sending by purposely and stubbornly not wishing to relocate? To me it says “I don’t care about anyone else but my peopleâ€, that is not American of them.

chris lets build it your back yard. really. right in your yard. and everday when you get up and go to sleep you can hear what barack calls the most pretty sound in the world "the muslim call to prayer." Think about it you get the whole freedom package right on your own doorstep. prayer songs, burkas, a stoning now and then for when you get out of line, and if your lucky your daughter will not be allowed to go to school or drive a car. Think about the insurance money you would save! wow chris you got this locked!

I have to confess, as a Liberal, that I don't care one way or the other if Muslims build in New York City. I DO care deeply if their rights (or anyone's) are impinged upon by a lynch mob mentality.
11:33 PM on 08/25/2010
i care if their rights were to be infringed by the government denying them the right to build a mosque near ground zero. But i'm insulted by the prospect of them doing it.
