EdgeTheory conversations is an ongoing discussion series that uses the news of the day as an opportunity to discuss broader technology and cultural trends.
In the latest conversation, Louis Gray and I discuss the rumored new service from Google called "Google Me."
Here's the synopsis.
With Digg's Kevin Rose tweeting out a rumor that Google is planning a social networking alternative to Facebook called "Google Me," the rumor mill around Mountain View is in full force. Louis Gray and Chris Saad discuss whether the Web needs a stronger alternative to Facebook, and if Google can be as strong in social as they are in more data-driven markets.

The more data they can get on users, the better it serves them. They used to be a search engine, but now they're more like the largest advertising company.
And as they continue to create blogs, maps, gmail, video, doc solutions etc, a social site would probably fit into their grand scheme of things.
And also be fun for them as Yahoo tries to build themselves as a destination/portal.
Google might have the search market share cornered, but they don't really have any kind of portal, just aggregators.
Time will tell
