The Fashion Whip: Michele Bachmann's Evolution From Minnesota Mom To Beltway Barbie (VIDEO)

Posted: 12/06/11 03:05 PM ET

The Fashion Whip is a political style column in the Huffington Post by Lauren Rothman and Christina Wilkie. Rothman is the founder of Styleauteur.

Rep. Michele Bachmann, the raven-haired Barbie of the political Right, ushered in this year wearing lots of yellow, with luminous waves and a smile that called to mind her political fairy godmother, Sarah Palin.

But as the months passed, a Beltway product gradually replaced the authentic Bachmann. This woman ordered photographers not to shoot her wearing causal clothes and seemed to aspire to the ultra-executive working woman look (save for her not-so-subtle use of false eyelashes).

Along the way she dropped the classic Republican red power suits in favor of cold neutrals -- gray, black and white. The only remaining accessories from the days before her presidential aspirations are her slightly wonky shoes, which look out of place on the new, more expensive version of Bachmann.

On the presidential campaign trail, Bachmann took a risk by wearing white tops for numerous televised debates -- a color that attracts light on screen, making nearly everyone who dons it look like they're wearing a blanket. She also debuted a tight chignon bun, hiding her beautiful, glossy hair.

On occasion, however, she did sport a trendy blowout. (Blow-dry bars are sprouting up across the country, and for about $35 for a half-hour of pampering, we can all have big, fluffy, Hollywood hair -- at least for a day.)

Bachmann closes out the year looking less like a normal person and more like a product of full-time stylists and make-up artists, with little left of the Minnesota mom who captivated the GOP's conservative base in 2010. Instead she has become a politician for mass consumption, with too much makeup and tacky,French-manicured acrylic nails.

If for any reason Bachmann doesn't win the presidency (gasp), she will be forced to transition back to semi-civilian life as a member of Congress next year, and she'll have to get by in a world with a lot less lipstick and a lot more boring meetings. How ever will she manage?

Until then check out the slideshow for the best and worst of Bachmann's presidential style evolution.

And follow @FashionWhip on Twitter for live coverage of style and politics at the Republican debate on Saturday, December 10.

What she's wearing, how she's wearing it and her make-up and hairdo have very little to do with why I wouldn't vote for her. Quite frankly, I have not seen that much of a transition, but -then again- I'm not looking at what any of the other candidates are wearing either. Can we do the same thing for the guys now?

Ms. Bachmann could be wearing Dolce and Gabbana, Versace, Anna Sui or The Gap and having her hair done in a more modern, more regular-woman way instead of the female politician's helmet extracted from the 80s and she still wouldn't be speaking to me. Her fashion sense or lack thereof is of little consequence when it comes to how good a president she would make... Yes, she is a woman...but the question is: is she an intelligent, eloquent, informed, capable, strong-enough woman to run the country?

The rest is just frosting.

Could we have an update on her shoes? Last entry about her shoes, they were too cheap for the fancy outfits she was wearing. This is the most vital and interesting part of this woman's persona, so we may as well be given all the details. Otherwise, we'll have to talk about ties.

"What Michele Bachmann Is Missing"

OMG, I was thinking the same thing and it's just too easy to fill in the blanks.

Bachmann is stylistically challenged but so are her male counterparts. Romney and Perry share the only hair stylist who uses Gorilla Glue as a gel. Ginrich has his suits tailored by Omar the Tent Maker. Paul shops at Goodwill. And so it goes.

Nice job on this article, ladies! The transition is scarey because it only solidifies the "make over" most presidential "contestants" undergo in an attempt to gain support. Bottom line is by the time they get physically made over and complete their course in "How to Look and Like and Act Like Presidential Material - 101", we as the public have absolutely no idea who these people are. There is a slight exception to this year's gaggle of repub. candidates ....... after they speak once or twice we know exactly who and what they are!

By the way, Bachmann looked way better before she announced running for President. "Beltway Barbie" is a good avatar!

Meanwhile the male candidates continue with their "men's furnishings" dull as ever. Maybe Rick Perry will revivie his "Chaps Ads". http://28.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lq0t0weebv1qztl9xo1_500.png

I don't care for her politics, but it is shameful to attack other women this way. The analysis of her wardrobe is clearly biased and intended to further de-credit her.

What's wrong with the article? I don't think it is an attack. It shows how some women will re-create themselves in order to be ...... to be whatever it is they're trying to be for the moment. She really shouldn't have had to recreate herself so much. Just like Palin and her clothing thing when she was running for VP - over the top clothes, make up, hair, jewelry, etc. Both Bachmann and Palin are nice looking women (horrible politics) and the focus on how they look via the over the top stuff, only made them look not like presidential material.
