The writing is pretty awful, too. I really hate when characters tell us (repeatedly) how important or good something is instead of letting us decide or figure it out for ourselves. The "judges" on this show--who I of course know are the director, writers, producer--are supposed to be professionals who would have likely heard hundreds upon thousands of auditions in their careers. For them to be all-grins or emote in a way that's anything more than methodical is insulting. For anyone to remark that the subject matter of the script is special in any way is bleeeeeech. Viewers understand that putting on a Broadway musical is no small undertaking so we don't need the characters to tell us.
I started watching Smash because I thought it would be interesting to see in a realistic way how a show gets produced. To see so many mistakes is disappointing, and when I'm underwhelmed by a number I hate to see characters over-the-moon by it. "Beautiful," in the Pilot, was neither here nor there.
I hope it catches on. I'm totally entertained by it.
