This Election Women Shouldn't Forget The Abortion Debate

We need to remember that women have made great strides for personal freedom over the years. Now is not the time to take a step backwards and let history repeat itself.

Roe v. Wade is still a hot topic. We know that John McCain and Sarah Palin are pro-life. They appear to be staunch supporters of denying women the right to make decisions regarding their reproductive lives.

Recently, on Good Morning America, Diane Sawyer asked Cindy McCain, "Do you oppose the repeal of Roe v. Wade?"

Cindy McCain replied, "There are people without jobs that are hurting, whose businesses have collapsed. This is not the major issues on people's minds right now."

Really? Even thinking about taking away a women's right to choose anything regarding her own body is an important discussion. To repeal a decision, made on women's behalf, is like walking back in time to an age where men ruled women's thoughts. Cindy McCain's non-answer, suggests that she does approve the repeal of Roe v. Wade.

Jill Biden, Senator Joe Biden's wife, had a chance to make a reply to the McCain response, as seen on GMA last week. Biden responded by saying she thought the issue was a very important one, and that she lived in the era where women fought for Roe v. Wade. She continued by saying, "I can't imagine the Supreme Court overturning it, so I think women have to remember that."

A woman's right to choose what happens to her body should be a fundamental right. As women, we must take stock of what it would mean should Roe v. Wade be overturned. We would lose our right to make decisions about our own persons in the most private ways imaginable. And if that happens, what is next? Will we lose our right to vote, or perhaps not be allowed to have our own money?

Being pro-choice does not mean you believe in personal abortions. It means you believe in the right for each woman to make her own decision, based on her own circumstance. Choice isn't a simple matter. Sometimes it makes life harder, but shouldn't it continue to be our right?

We need to remember that women have made great strides for personal freedom over the years. Now is not the time to take a step backwards and let history repeat itself.
