Today the BBC reported that Syria was torturing injured demonstrators in hospitals. Let's hope what happened here happens in Syria sometime soon

Tunisia's landmark election was a monumental achievement in democracy
And yet the anti-Islamic bigots will still scream and cry because they didn't elect some puppet who would put the interests of the USA over the interests of his own people.
Here they come - 3.....2...1.....

we'll have to wait and see for that... whether it's actually in the interests of the people or not. in countries where state controls the economy like egypt, tunisia, iraq and turkey, one can't overlook the class structures of social dynamism.

in turkey, we've had a somewhat secularist, pretty much non-intellectual but politically savvy upper class for a very long time. thousands and thousands of petty uneducated criminals exploiting their political connections, their miserable, dog-faced, perfume stinking wives riding alone in their expensive cars looking down on the common man, as their husbands are enjoying the company of a russian mistress with a face no amount of money can buy for the lonely, ugly bridge expert who waits at home.

the conservatives played on this legitimate grievance, since the mid 90s, taking the populist route. the ten years of akp rule has brought one thing, gradual replacement of the old upper class with their own, bringing the replacement of the dog faced wives with hound faced wives wearing headscarves. as for the poor and the ever melting away middle class, not so much has changed.

Pure black imagery. Beautifully written, but how nice I don't have to inhabit such a black world.

Cheer up--there are pills for that. Things can get a lot worse, and probably will because we live in interesting times.

The surprise will be when the colonial powers that ran the revolution in Libya discover the rebels won't let them install a puppet.

Attempting to explain the actions of Muslims as reactions to colonialism is a paradigm that ceased to be useful or relevant some time ago.

Did Americans elect Mubarak? No. Nor did the Soviets elect Nasser. Neither did they elect Saddam or Khomeini.

Muslims have their own agendas that have very little to do with what anyone else wants. It is parochial to assume otherwise.

Americans and Europeans have largely had the role of somewhat surprised observers rather than participants in the Arab Spring, with the exception of Libya, where we refused to sit still and watch a tyrannical government massacre its own.
