I don't get it, do these people want someone to pay for their education AND then be spoonfed a job when they graduate? Is that the bottom line? I mean, I worked 50 hours a week in the service industry and went to an affordale State school, paid my own tuition. I didn't cry about things not being given to me, I made my own breaks. And now, I don't consider myself "the 99%". I consider myself with the 50% that actually pay income taxes. How are the rich not "paying their fair share" when 50% of wage earners don't even pay federal income tax...what else do you want? Oh, I know, you want handouts.
02:08 PM on 11/02/2011
You exaggerate. Many students have been conditioned from birth by their parents, their society, and the higher education industry to EXPECT a college education. Of course they expect that the money will somehow fall from the sky and that they will land that dream job upon graduation. 18-year-olds need to learn that many useful and interesting occupations do not require expensive university educations.

Way to generalize. Most college kids are working their asses off in school, both in class and holding a job on top of it, only to find themselves at the end of it with massive debt from their loans and no jobs available (I truly feel bad for the kids graduating today, with the job market and economy is such horrible shape).

I guess it's easier to blindly call anyone struggling these days lazy or looking for a handout...

What, are there no prisons, are the work houses no longer in operation?
01:58 PM on 11/02/2011
I am not right wing -- not at all! But I can't advise often enough that students should not be in college unless they have goals. Sure some need help paying their tuition but only those with a genuine need for higher education should apply. And, yes, we will always need good plumbers, electricians, etc. Any student who is planning to walk out of class to join a protest does not have my sympathy.

WHY shouldn't our students have something to say NOW about their future? What is going on in Washington NOW is what will effect their lives for a very long time...
Here's a thought, the Republicans want GOVERNMENT out of BIG BUSINESS, out of our Schools...YOU name they want GOVERNMENT OUT. WELL OK, but why is it RIGHT to have BIG BUSINESS in our Government. REALLY, we're supposed to lay down and let CORPORATIONS run our Government...

The cradle to grave welfare state didn't work in the Soviet Union, East Germany, Poland, China, Cuba , or North Korea. ( Greece, Portugal, Italy )

The US began a program of socialism in the 1930's and only WW2 and the Federal Reserve printing money has postponed the inevitable. Politicians always kick the problem down the road. The promise everything to voters and leave the next generation with the bill.

The bureaucracy has given the US residents a super safe country but the cost is being felt now by the younger generation.

Cost benefit analysis anyone ?

There is a site that lists the yearly CEO pay of just about every major publicly traded company, you can divide it by 2000(your typical worker 50 weeks of works with two weeks of vacation) to come up with an hourly wage. For example, the CEO of GM makes $12,000 per hour, I think that would make for some good signs to carry, to post in store windows or in your car window as examples of the 1%.

I have no desire to bring them or any wealthy person down to my working class level. I just feel that would be a good way to point out that certain "job creatots" can afford to have a modest increase in their taxes to help bring the deficit down. Cutting jobs, services and benefits that fall only on the working and middle class is the true class warfare and is not fair. I feel people making that kind of money could easily have their rates go up to the pre Bush cuts of 3% more without too much undo suffering. BTW, I drive a 15 year old Mustang.

I find it hillarious that the Occupy Wall Street movement is primarily raising funds out of a Tucson Az based company...Alliance for Global Justice, the movement's fiscal sponsor. So all these Libs have the boycot AZ theme going on yet its AZ that is coordianting all the money being raised for New York. If Democants would ever get their message straight and on the same sheet of music they would be a force to be recogned with..Sadley they never have and never will LMAO

It's good to see students getting into the act. It's their future that's at stake and, of all of us, these young people are the ones who have the most to lose.

There is never any horror in creating for oneself provided the means and the opportunity exists. Your slur is an insult reflecting your lack of forthrightness and honesty. You would rather call Injustice fair than hold those who profit from constricting future opportunities for an entire generation of people to account for their crimes against humanity! This is global! One way to reduce human beings to a state of willingness to work for slave wages is to rob them of the opportunity to do meaningful work and earn a Living wage!

Nobody is stopping anyone from doing anything. If you want to invent machines that make it possible for a McDonald's to operate employee free, fully automated, you can do it.

The world is no different today than it was 200 years ago in regards to opportunity. We have not run out of things to invent. Contrary to the beliefs of many.

With effort and hard work will come a decent life. You don't get a decent life simply because you go to college.

There are members of my community and in the business community nationally full of individuals whose inventions were ripped off by corporations too big too sue! Your insulting insinuation that the young expect something for nothing is disgusting, considering their sacrifice and years of debt repayment for an education that nets them next to nothing! When it comes to opportunity, the world is very different today than it was 200 yrs ago. We have no free market today in the US! We have a corporate monopoly who owns our government officials and dictates the rules of commerce domestically and abroad. Turn on the lights!

Let's hope that student activists don't detract from the original focus of OWS, which was economic inequality among the wealthy and impoverished Americans of all ages. If "Occupy Colleges" does not take too much time away from students' goal of obtaining a useful degree, then let's hope that their plans to walk out of classes does not give too much of a party atmosphere to a serious situation.
