This report leaves out the salient fact that last year Greenpeace and the Sea Shepard were able to force the Japanese "Research" ship to abandon whaling for the season far short of their usual haul.

These conservationists risk their very lives to shine a bright spotlight on the Japanese whaling industry. More and more people are becoming aware of this and that is a good thing. It is not necessary, and it is not acceptable in this day and age. The excuse they give here is laughable.

I read this story yesterday and am appalled. I wonder how many PETA people donated to the tsunami relief effort? Their reasoning for using tsunami relief money to fund whale hunting... it helps costal communities. BS.

I see you probably don't donate money to help people. We kill more defenseless people than any other species, including other species.

So the Japanese whale meat lobby must be pretty strong. After an embarrassing exit from the area last year thanks to the Sea Shepherds, they are back with bogus money to try again. There was talk of them quitting the whale hunting. So much for that. This is the sick side of the Japanese culture.

Another season of Whale Wars! That's a good thing.

It's not some lobby ala tobacco or the NRA... it's cultural stubbornness and pride. Japanese are loathe to admit mistakes in public. That's why Asia in general still hates the country. They're victims of their own social order... and they don't have a clue how to deprogram themselves... not that they care.

I wish I was the guy that gets to harpoon these whales! How incredibly awesome it would be to line a whale up in the sights of your harpoon and BOOM! and the harpoon goes flying and whale blood is gushing like a geyser! Then you get to drag this massive beast on deck and take it apart. What a great job! I really admire these Japanese whale men.

Of course, since the public in Japan was not informed about this imbedding whaling budget into disaster relief funds, and the vast majority of Japanese would not question their politicians (Sensei) due to the social hierarchy, this kind of legislation passes without petitions. Democracy only works when people feel they can engage their elected officials. More and more our legislators in Congress are resembling the Japanese Diet Members in that they are accountable only to the party line and the campaign donations from greedy corporate interests and lost causes (like whaling, missile defense, etc.)

Well, I guess Japan is in a bit of a pickle then. Remember when we tried to put a moratorium on offshore drilling? BP hardy had to lift a finger, all it had to do was sit and watch as droves of company employees came out against the move because it would put them out of work.

Imagine what happens whenever some well-meaning Japanese politician tries to put a moratorium on whaling. Of course trying to reinstate whaling will be mighty hard since many of those whalers will probably have a hard time keeping their big mouths shut and probably spill the beans on some practice that the western world was still relatively ignorant about.

I don't understand why the Japanese persist in the hypocrisy of pretending that hunting for whale meat is scientific research, I doubt that anyone believes that tired old tale. It makes no sense in spending money that could go to a better cause on this activity. As whale meat is not that popular and is being stored in warehouses what is the point. I can only think that it is stubbornness on the part of the government that allows this farce to continue. Next Japanese disaster of any kind you can forget my donation.

I wonder how much money they would have gotten had they said some of it was going towards boosting their whaling fleet?

My home was destroyed by a tornado and I need funds to help me rebuild my house, along with my meth lab.
