Those poor parents. I can only imagine the grief. I'm amazed she was able to get up there and speak about her children.

How god aweful, so sad.

No matter what a "genius" this Badger woman is, she will never make her concubine Michael Borcina look good. Any photo of him says it all: Narcissist to the max. What kind of person retains photos of an ex on his FB page when seeing someone new? A narcissist. That's for starters. The rest -- showing up at the wake and funeral -- are beyond the narcissism scale.
04:51 PM on 01/08/2012
She obviously wanted him there, walking arm-in-arm with the children's killer in front of the grieving biological father. So bizarre and inappropriate. They're both narcissists as far as I'm concerned, and he shows sociopathic tendencies. I'm glad the police are investigating this.

I cannot fathom how she's even standing. My heart just breaks for her and her ex husband. Her strength to share with us her beautiful moments with her kids and her parents is admirable.

It wouldn't be a surprise to eventually learn that the two who escaped the fire are the very ones who set the fire.
01:21 PM on 01/08/2012
I don't believe that. This was carelessness on the part of the person who disposed of the embers half-heartedly and maybe even impatiently. Someone who just didn't take fire safety seriously. Why is so hard to believe, yet a sinister scenario is more plausible? Maybe if people would not let their cynical imaginations run rampant and instead focus on the sober realities of life with regard to things well within our control, such tragedies would not happen. I'll tell you what I've learned from this: make sure the fire is out! Period! Deluge it with water, smother it, beat it, if you have to. No excuses, no, "I'm too tired." Or any dismissive attitude. BE SURE!

Not really. Fire started on first floor and quickly spread/rose. No smoke detectors to make them aware earlier. Small kids. Three floors - some areas not supposed to be lived in. Construction chaos. Scaffolding blocking some windows. Top all that off with fear, shock, and tiredness and you have major discombobulation.

Sorry, it's just too hard to accept those children found no helping hand to lead them out. How could it engulf them all so quickly! If only there could be some explanation for this huge tragedy-- a timeline, efforts made to save them... We're left with the crude facts only.

If you have ever been in a house fire you would know that smoke becomes very dense in very short time. You literally see nothing but smoke. Then you start chocking. It is amazing that anyone got out alive. Add to it that everyone was asleep and disoriented.

For all the sanctimonious finger-pointers screaming about building & occupancy permits, as if Badger somehow brought this on by negligence: It was just the home's second floor being renovated - the structure was not inherently unsafe. How many of us have lived in a home while it was being renovated? If it was dangerous, do you think the CONTRACTOR would have stayed there? The Yule log was removed from the fireplace because the girls were concerned about Santa's safety when he came down the chimney. Yes, it was unsafe to put the Yule log where it started the fire. Yes, smoke detectors might have saved the family. So many maybes and what-ifs. And not one of them matter now. It was a horrible accident, not a crime.

Instead of spewing hateful criticism, go do something nice for somebody today.
03:55 PM on 01/07/2012
Although I can understand why people are jumping all over him...you are correct. Many of us don't have fire detectors and many have used an unlicensed contractor as well...a "friend of a friend" and whatnot. But I do have to wonder why someone would stick burning embers in a container and leave it there...however, I would imagine that the grief this man will carry the rest of his life will be far worse then whatever any of us will wish upon him.

What you say is true, but why would WE wish anything upon him? He obviously thought it was a safe place to put the embers. He was wrong. He didn't do it with malice.

There are reports of an increase in recent purchases of smoke detectors in the aftermath of this tragedy...so obviously there are MANY other people who didn't have smoke detectors either. So, Ms. Badger is not alone in her oversight.

I feel for the woman and her estranged husband, but am having so much trouble not being disgusted by the boyfriend. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that you stick fresh embers in a bag and leave it in or near the house without hosing it down at least. Seeing him in back of the parents is just creepy.
08:07 PM on 01/07/2012
I felt that way to for some reason.I don't want to blame anyone but I just can't understand how in the world he could make such a mistake with hot embers. For the life of me I will never understand what he was thinking.I just pray for this family and hope that some point in time they will be able to at least have some kind of peace in their life but I am very afraid that any kind of peace will be hard to find.Lord please have mercy on them.

No. There is no real recovery from losing three children and your parents in one hideous night.

I just pray that she finds some useful, engaging work that will buy her a few hours every day where she won't think about them.

People involved in such tragedies find that -- after the first hideous few years -- they can bury themselves in being useful to others -- in nursing or working in a rest home, for example -- and it brings them some peace.

Accidents happen and unfortunately lives are lost. His intentions were certainly not for this to happen. For instance, someday a person my walk in front of your car.Should you be jailed,of course not.

I believe that's what an investigation is for...to determine if it was an accident, if there was negligence involved and whether anyone should be charged. They usually don't take people into custody until they determine the facts. Why not let the police do their jobs and not convict the guy yet?

Actually, many in CT are wondering about that.

'Why her girls?' Why indeed. No CO for the living quarters, no permits issued for the construction , and NO smoke detectors.

Kylie,im a contractor and people dont want permits because their taxes go up after work is done. The homeowner should be responsible for smoke detectors.

This is the father of the children and if anyone has the right to be there,he does. It is obvious that the man loved these little girls more than life itself, and ,as you can see, his wife certainly has no hatred towards him, and,by the way, it was she who filed for divorce. You can see the "boyfriend",contractor making sure he is breathing down her neck all the time( he is the bald one in back of her). Her husband did not "show up to make her feel worse"-he wanted to say good bye to his girls. The fire commissioner was on the news here in Ct and he,also extremely distrought even for a seasoned firefighter, was also very angry and made the statement that NO ONE should live in a dwelling that is undergoing so much renovation and restoration. I think that maybe a bill will be made, "Badgers and Johnson Bill" which will someday make it illegal to reside in a structure like that until it is completed.Maybe some good will come out of this terrible tragedy. The smoke detectors were not even hooked up. Now is not the time to point fingers-5 lives were lost, things will never be the same, hostilities will be formed......never take your life for granted.
