Climate change is not a winning political issue. Keystone XL will not change global CO2 emissions, plus or minus. Making that argument is certain to lose, the majority do not believe climate change is a pressing issue. __ The safety of Nebraska water supply is all that matters, focus on that. __ And on states rights - doesn't Nebraska have a say in this, or does the Fed government tell them what to do? Conservatives have to love that argument. __ It's like I have to tell you everything :-)

It's already too late, yet it isn't a pressing issue for the majority. When would it be a good idea to take action? There's more things delusional than religion, ideology, and partisanship here. The majority of people believe the lies they are told by those with money and power because they fear to even contemplate doing otherwise. All you're doing is proposing to take advantage of their lack of courage and intellect, so all you have that they lack is chutzpah.

Big Oil is the most profitable industry on the planet.
They intend to squeeze every post-peak penny they can out of this planet's natural resources.

Not even close to the truth. Phone companies like AT&T are twice as profitable as big oil and pay half the tax rate. The drug industry is another example.

Gas was $5 a gallon, oil $140 a barrel in Jan 2008 - a year before Bush left office. It fell to half that price by the time Obama took office in Jan 2009 because all commodities did, copper, food - because Bush had destroyed the global economy, even had to bail out Wall St. He lost 3M jobs before he left. Obama lost 2M in the next six months, added jobs ever since - and may be back to even by election. __ Hoover drove down prices too, that's what Depressions do. It's called "deflation", house prices did exactly the same thing. My parents grew up in the Depression. The shanty towns were called Hooverville years after FDR took over, this will always belong to Bush.

"We are hopeful, confident even, that the president will put the American people before Big Oil's profits. "

Yes we are, but the facts are , sadly, that the president is only the president, and the oil compnay is as he mentioned, the richest industry in America. And are no virgins to buying both influence and attacking detracters. I wont like it, but we will all be able to measure how far too powerful the oil companies are if he caves.

The oil industry are paupers compared to the medical industry: insurers, providers, drug dealers. We spend 6% of GDP on all our energy vs 19% on medical. And as bad as Wall St has done since crash, financials still beat the oil industry for profit. Financials were 40% of all US profit before the crash, can't beat that. Oil companies have to provide a real service, it's more lucrative to sell insurance or profit from debt. Take rather than give, because I'll bet even you drive.

What is behind the curtain is the reality we need jobs and oil to run our economy. The risks are tiny compared to the rewards and the hard fact there is no feasible alternative to oil right now. Maybe you ought to focus on developing an efficient alternative rather than destroying our economy which already has thousands of miles of pipleline with very little problems. Throw on top of it, 60% of Americans support the pipeline. Big oil doesn;t control them, they know they need oil and don;t want to be dependent on the middle eastern kind.

The pipeline has nothing to do with oil for America.

The pipeline is going to a port so it can be shipped overseas.

It amazes me that you know where the oil will be shipped!! Please enlighten us oh great fortune teller

Nope.
We could put more Americans to work building green infrastructure - solar fields, wind farms, more efficient power grids.
The Canadian oil would not be ours.
It would be sold on the world market to the highest bidder (China), and our land would only be the drug mule, allowing Canada to NOT spoil their own pristine mountain rainforests (which Canadians will not allow).

The best we have? Hardly. Have you hear of the Fisker? It's another Obama administration boondoggle with ANOTHER half billion dollars of taxpayer money being directed toward a company of connected investors building an $89,000 dollar electric sports car. And unlike the boondoggle of Solynda, for this project THEY ARE GOING TO BUILD IT IN FINLAND!.

The MSM is mostly sitting on this story. What is needed is a bold and courageous Chief News Officer who will blow the lid off this story and get the MSM off of their butts. I hope they haven't all been co opted by corporations and The One Percenters.

Worst president ever.

His problem is in everyones pocket. So he delays and drains all the money he can. He will go with the Union more money than tree huggers. Pipleline will come. He will act like so hero in making this choice.

As a fourth generation oilfield worker I can tell you what I have seen over the years. Leaking pipelines in Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma and California. Running BS (bottom sludge) out of oil tanks and onto the ground. Running salt water from oil wells down creeks and rivers. Drilling mud lost down hole into drinking water aquifers. Drilling fluid run down creeks and rivers. Wells plugged with fence posts instead of concrete leading to sink holes hundreds of feet deep. Oil companies do not have your best interest at heart and must be forced kicking and screaming into caring about us, our drinking water, and our lands. I can take you to places in Oklahoma and Kansas that are as toxic as any place on the planet.

Gas prices are already going to go up in the Midwest. There is a key pipeline that runs NORTH from Texas to Cushing, OK, the glutted terminus for Canadian and US crude. This oversupplied delivery point is the reason why midwestern gas is so cheap. The owner of the northbound pipeline is planning to reverse its flow. This will alleviate the oversupply and lead to higher gas prices in the Midwest -- whether Keystone XL is built or not.

Indeed, in the pipeline application, the lower prices in the Midwest are cited as one reason to approve the pipeline; they say the current situation distorts the market.
