Let's see . . .4 teachers . . .350 k aggregate annual salary. Saddest part is that none of the kids could figure out how many oranges each slave picked. !
09:28 AM on 01/20/2012
Lived in Georgia for awhile. You had better redo your math on the teacher salaries. When my sister in law started teaching in Florida for 36K, it was what she was getting in Georgia after 3 yrs. So, I am pretty sure a teacher isn't making over 80K in Georgia, not even in Atlanta.

My fourth grade math skills at their finest . . .!
07:34 PM on 01/20/2012
Yeah, I don't think any teacher at a public school makes 80K. A college professor probably doesn't even make that much. Most teachers start around 30K. So that would be more like 120 - 140 k aggregate annual salary.

Incredible stupidity.
01:46 AM on 01/20/2012
The wording of the math problem in general was questionable to me besides the inappropriateness of the verbage being used. Regardless of race or nationality it is safe to say that a math word problem is not the proper form to teach students about history or slavery. Racism still exist in today's society, and it is okay to speak up about its injustices. The world would not change if everyone continues to turn a blind eye. I am going to go out on a limb and say that "Frederick" was probably "Frederick Douglass", the leader of the abolitionist movement after escaping slavery in the 18th century. He was a firm believer in the equality of all. A quote from Frederick "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong." Information is readily available to us and one should do their research and post comments that are meaningful, and not as distasteful as the word problem to begin with.

The original story mentioned that this lesson was given out in conjunction with a history lesson about slaves, so it was not out of context. However, it was in bad taste at least, and yes, small children don't quite get the concept of slavery or in this day and age, beatings. To me, third graders have enough problems just learning how to read and write and learning math. More ironic, I think the teachers thought they were doing the politically correct thing. To the rest of you who think this is ha ha funny, real slaves pain and suffering was not ha ha funny. Should the teachers be fired? No, they have already learned a valuable lesson themselves.

Honey are you naive or what?

Politically correct? In what way? This is a wink and a smirk from a cynical white supremacist mindset.

And I hardly think they have learned their lesson. Where do yu draw thses conclusions from?
02:24 AM on 01/20/2012
the conclusions were drawn from gwinnett county georgia of course or cobb county....(?).

didnt slavery go out in the 1800s? I know i have never met a slave. Never met a person who knew a slave! On one hand i agree, the math problem could have been worded to fit in alot of other scenarios. On the other hand in conjunction with a history lesson, its still awful, but its not like the children are going t leave school and see a bunch of african americans picking cotton and go look slaves.. shine my shoes! And now instead of reiderating what they have learned, a simple math problem, and history, its blown completely out of purportion, and without a doubt the teacher will get punished, which in turn is slowing childrens learning down because they will likly get a substitute, waste of money in so many different levels, possibly a new teacher, so new game plan on teaching.. Its just a huge mess, when somebody could have just pointed out to the teacher, saying maybe, hey this is kinda bad do you think you could change this? Nobody is perfect including me, and this teacher and everone. people make mistakes, judgement and all..
09:02 AM on 01/20/2012
Obviously, you know nothing of the horrors of slavery and the Jim Crow laws after its abolishment. Racism is alive and well.. Especially in the southern states. I know because I live in a southern state..

ya right - i'm pretty liberal about most things - i found a great deal of humor in this story - first how can anybody come up with these types of questions without acknowledging that there would be somekind of lashback - but i also found this to be distasteful , and i believe they should be fired for this - its jus plain stoopit for a teacher to think they can get away with this type of behaviour - but worse have happened

how is this against blacks? If anything,it would disparage the evil white slave owner.
11:45 PM on 01/19/2012
It's a given..the teachers were black. If they were white, you'd have seen their faces, along with those of their families and where they lived.

Uh...to answer the question, since the "coloreds" were only 3/5 human...

Also, just a quick note...the perjorative term against African-Americans that begins with a "n" and ends with an "r" is Niger...

Back during the church-state empires and their global institutions of slavery and decadence, a good portion of the slave trade originated along the Niger River region.

Because the pre-schooler of today has more education and intelligence than most of the crowned heads of church-state Europe had back in the days (just from watching Sesame Street, not to mention everything else in early childhood education)...

...they were ignorant and didn't know how to properly pronounce Niger...and it became the slave term that it did.

Supply and demand.

If white Europeans weren't such jerks, to put it nicely, there would be no market for these unfotunate people to be captured, traded, bought and sold and shipped across the ocean to live generations in bondage.

So if you are trying for some sort of moarl equivalency thing, it doesn't fly.

A few hundred Africans exploited the situation versus millions of European/ Americans who supported and profited from the travesty.
