When the consequences for driving drunk begin to approach the severity of the act, we will begin to to seriously tackle this problem.
I suggest a 1 year suspension for the first offense, and permanent revocation of driving privileges for the second offense. It works quite well in other countries.

We are one of the most lenient countries when it comes to drunk driving. Shameful.
09:50 PM on 01/19/2012
In some states, you can have multiple DUI convictions, but unless one involves death or serious injury, you won't be charged with a felony. That's shameful!

Why do you say the alleged intoxicated driver? Did you read the story?
09:51 PM on 01/19/2012
Until they're convicted, it's still officially "alleged", even if they admit to it!

As a resident of NM I cheered when I heard this, our roads are full of intoxicated drivers who genuinly believe they have a constutional right to get plastered and drive home. I have to avoid some roads at night because of the homicidal drunks (& druggies) careening down them. The State Troopers etc do their best but Gov Martinez (R) thinks they need to be cutback.

As a native NM, I ask what do we expect. Look how we treat the indians...If you were forced to live with dirt floors and in abject poverty you might drink to excess also. I'm not condoning it, but I get it.

As Jon Stewart stated the other night regarding the suicide netting in China "We would call this treating the symptom". Or, denying the cause...it's easier/cheaper that way.

You shouldn't have to but, if they don't the problem under control it would be wise to consider moving. Before you move though, make sure you file a lawsuit against them for failure to "Serve &Protect". You shouldn't have to avoid the roads, stay confined to your home or fear for your life. I am sorry for you.

People will continue to drive drunk until we begin implementing more aggressive charges for the worse offenders. Right now if you get a DWI at .08% or you are .24% you are charged the same. I don't want some poor sap that had 1 too many beers getting locked away for 10 years, but if you knowingly getting wasted and you can't tell what side of the road you're on then you need to go away for a VERY LONG TIME. And if you kill somebody you get charged with premeditated 1st degree murder.
04:47 PM on 01/19/2012
what state are you in??
There are three tiers in PA
and for the record, i could walk on my hands at .08, its an insanely low BAC for a DUI

I'm in SC and from NC & I've never seen tiers before, which is exactly my point. Here if you blow a .08, which I could also function clearly on, you're going to spend the night in jail and be charged just the same as if you blew .40.
