I always thought that the US would become even wealthier and then help other countries help themselves to become self sustainable over time.
Today the people of America are becoming poor and the families are suffering because of an economy run by the corporations and the wealthy with the blessings of Congress. As for helping others overseas...we don't even help Americans, and this nation apparently doesn't care about anything but the almighty dollar.

People in America have sent over $9 billion to Mexico last year. Of course they took 10,000,000 jobs away from citizens in this country to do it. That's a pretty big donation.

We do help our own, many of us do. Those who do not see it, are not helping. The government does work with the poor here. Yes much more needs to be done. Such as improvement of nutrition to the poor. Many of those in this country have money, eat to much, and are still undernourished by the foodstuff that we call fast food.

I know people get mad at this thought, but in a time where everyone is suffering maybe we need to re-evaluate the way we've been approaching countries that get aid such as Kenya. We have been unable to get results for decades now so maybe after probably billions have been spent its time to try something different such as birth control or even sterilization. Snip the men, it's non-invasive and almost painless and the result will be no more children starving and being mistreated. Or just stop helping all together and the rest will work itself out. Either way we can't sustain propping everyone else around the world up and it's beginning to show.

Not so much mad as incredibly sad. What about the hungry children in the U.S.?

or, you know, provide opportunities and rights for women. That is more effective and moral than involuntary sterilization. When women have power, birthrate plummets.

There are products that can be feed to these children and save their lives, the biggest problem is getting it to them. Gas prices are rising again and will continue to rise, food and food packaging is going to continue to rise as well, but I read that in the usa we now have school food police, a preschooler was ordered to eat school chicken nuggets because the food inspector didn't approve of the turkey & cheese sandwich, watermelon slices and juice....mom got charged for the school lunch too.

And theythrew away the turkey & cheese sandwich. That parent should told them to never do that again, I would. Parents often forget the teachers work for them, the parents are the teachers boss, not the other way around.

It wasn't even a teacher, strictly a state employee food police, who would have thought it possible.

like it or not the people having ten kids in these dirt poor countries should really be provided with free birth-control/abortion so they can stop having so many kids most of which they have no way of supporting..the first step is to get rid of the "authorities" religious or otherwise in these countries who do not allow or condemn contraception ..either that or educate the people with or without their (the "authorities") consent so that they can then choose to ignore or get rid of these idiot "authorities" ..call it a covert war on ignorance

These poor people should not marry or use a condom. They fail to see the cause and keep dealing with the effects
09:21 AM on 02/15/2012
These poor people have no education and poor nutrition for generations and a hopelessness that is very difficult for Americans to understand. The more children you have, the more hands to help out and to send out to work or to gather food and water.

That is simple enough to be straight from the Bible. Of course, it couldn't be more contrary to it. It also doesn't take into account rape, wars and a lack of education or condoms.

if you get raped then use a birth control pill the next day instead of waiting 9 months.

The U.S. has some good organization and people that reach out..and the list is long, including those who support getting good nutrition that heals and maintains good health. Building blocks of our body, but the masses, the general public dont understand this because our politics intereferes with growth that is not profitable and we have to fight for it..compromise to get basic human rights.

If you have never went hungry for a long period of time, and for the children in this article, all their life...you do not know how they suffer, but one thing they dont do is suffer over their suffering, those children do not feel sorry for themselves. U.S. can not give what it does not have...and thats true understanding and change in our own backyard first...we send "crap" overseas, saying this is being a good neighbor. U.S. wouldnt eat why should other countries. We rationalize our actions because it makes us look and feel better. I hope Mrs. Obama continues her plight on nutrition, and expands it...so important. Private money only goes so far, but a change in the masses perspective on what is really the "greater good" would be step up in evolution, we may then be called civil.

This is truly tragic. These images certainly make me feel bad for the hungry accross the globe. That being said, if you can't afford to feed your children, maybe you shouldn't pro-create. I think investments in contraception and sex education as well as investments in food are important in helping to resolve this problem...

I am afraid we are getting very hardened to seeing the faces of starving children. The U.S., especially the media, is so self involved in the republican primaries and presidential politics in general that we don't even see anything else any more.

It's not about access to contraceptives; it's about the lack of global political will to care for the poorest. (As for over population, talk China or India, not Africa.)

Well China used to have starvation, and they started population control.

Yes contraceptive are a large part of it, also educating women, changing cultural patterns, reducing climate change and eliminating food speculation.
