Everybody has an opinion

Oh my goodness that sounds awful. Never having been to China and having seen one of those toilets it sounds like a pit or hole in the ground/concrete...I would be so afraid the baby might have swallowed or breathed in all kinds of germs/bacteria etc., oh how awful. I wish them the best...and I certainly hope this baby has a life that is much better than this start.

If the "bathrooms" in China are like the ones in Hong Kong - it is nothing more than a concrete trench that women squat over. Not a toilet as we are used to seeing. Actually it was SO gross that I decided I really did not have to pee. Guess I am spoiled.

First of all, glad the baby is okay. Second, how does a baby get flushed down a toilet? Newborns are much to big to flush down a toilet bowl hole. And if she gave birth in a toilet -wouldnt the baby still be "attached" to the mom via the umbilical cord? Who safely cut and clamped the cord? This doesnt add up. And really, how do you not feel the baby coming out? Pooping and giving birth are two completely different experiences. I have a 2 year old and a baby on the way -you cant mistake giving birth... I just dont buy this story. Sorry.

okay, let's step back a minute. First of all, it wasn't a flush toilette like we have here, but a "pit". I've seen them in Europe and other countries. Second of all, she would not be the first mom to mistake the urge to have a BM with the urge to push for a baby. No, they are absolutely NOT different experiences until the baby is further down the birth canal. As a nurse, I worked in labor and delivery. Now, I'm a labor doula. Hearing the words "I need to poop" or "I feel like I"m going to have a BM" are the magic words that let me know it's time for baby. As far as who cut the umbilical cord? It's not a bungee cord! It can and will rip lose (from baby, from placenta, or somewhere in the middle). Also the weight of the baby falling, the sudden jerking, could cause the placenta to separate prematurely and the placenta would fall with baby. Hope this helps to clear up your misconceptions,.

I'm surprised that more babies aren't born while the labouring mother is on the toilet. It makes sense - and even more so when squatting.
( wish I'd had a doula :)

From the collection of headlines on this subject from around the world, this sort of thing is common. When I was in third grade my friend told me the story about her sister being born in the toilet...boy did I have fun with that! Her sister was older than me and mean as a snake...it was my only recourse!

One thing for sure- when the child grows up, she will NEVER play poker.....Royal flushes would make her nervous...P.S. I AM NOT insenitive. I am quite thankful the little tike was not killed. Besides...flushies are hard to come by in places not catering to westerners,. THAT would have made it worse.
