The price of oil, coal and nuclear keep going up while the price of wind and solar are dropping.

Wind, solar, wave energy, geothermal and second generation biofuels made from algae, cellulose and waste are the future.

Wave energy not good. Focus, it must be solar.

That's correct just not near future
11:32 PM on 04/14/2012
Wind and solar are competitive in many areas now.

Alternative energy investments outpace gas, oil and coal.

Wind energy, solar energy, wave energy and biomass drew $187 billion last year compared with $157 billion for natural gas, oil and coal, according to Bloomberg

Wow, and anonymous Rueters article, with lots of "Experts say" and some people believe.

With zero reference to back up the claims, and comparisons to 10 years plan for 5 million jobs, to the million or so created in 3 years as if it's failed.

Black and blame.

Fossil and nuke bought energy folks cut subsidies

then blame Obama for "promised" jobs.

Here's a better article:

"Green Jobs Report: At Least 3.1 Million Americans Employed In Green Sector, Labor Department Says"

So Rueters must be invested in fossils and nukes. Too bad, it's a bad investment.

I would like to set aside the Green label since it's a political definition that is susceptible to the whims of politicians. How about break down by sector such as solar, wind, etc. Then break down by category such as manufacturing, installation, operations, etc.

No, I'd rather fight the very ludicrous notion that nukes are "green".

Nukes are black. Blacker than coal.

Built on public land, the facility is the largest of its kind in the United States. Its 1 million solar panels provide enough energy to power 17,000 homes.

And it employs just 10 people.

So it is an incredibly efficient system that doesn't need tons of babysitting and doesn't give off waste that doesn't decompose in 50,000 years? What a horrible travesty! Build more coal plants quick!

"He handed out tens of billions of dollars to green energy companies, including his friends and campaign contributors at companies like Solyndra that are now bankrupt," Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said on April 4.

Does Mitt realize that there was ONE BILLION DOLLARS OF PRIVATE INVESTMENT in Solyndra? And that the 2nd largest investor was the WALTON FAMILY - hardly a "friend" of the Democrats or President Obama!! So, is Mittens being WILFULLY IGNORANT or is he just that dense??

And what jobs program has been presented by the republicans. I know, more tax cuts for the wealthy in the famously failed trickle down voodoo economics of the last thirty years. Of course, you wouldn't know that since your information comes from Fixed News. Starving the beast and employing obstructionism has prevented more job creation from occurring. But then again, history and economics are not your strong points either. However, making stuff up seems to be well suited for you.
08:32 PM on 04/14/2012
Its called trickle down economics. The rich get richer and soon need another worker to mow their lawn
02:03 PM on 04/13/2012
Its not a question of how many jobs this initiative creates. This is life or death situation, we have to switch to cleaner more responsible ways of operating, we are going to destroy the planet we live on. How much will you care about the unemployment rate when you cant breath fresh air because we have polluted the planet so horribly.

16,000 people have been placed in jobs from a program that has only spent 173 million? And even if they arn't placed they learn skills that could help them over their working lifetime? That seems like money well spent. If I remember right for every billion spent on infrastructure 40,000 jobs are created, seems like the green energy training program is a bargain that needs to be more fully impemented.

And the recovery act has a more narrow defenition of employment in green jobs than what is already in place.

Seems like this article is sounding off on a number of facts that makes things look bad, but overall is a better investment than what we usually do.

That's the way I read it too. They could have compared how many jobs are in conventional power generation but since they didn't its suspect. Even if the workers are unionized that is still a valuable target for labor productivity which is how an administrator has to see it. So overall the onus is on job creation by building out mega-solar, today!

Yes, growth would be slow as long as our 'leaders' (big carbon employees) give dirty industry the lion's share of subsidies and tax breaks that should have gone to green energy......AGAIN.

Developing a source of renewable energy that only needs a few people to maintain it is the goal, correct? Energy sources that have virtually no variable costs associated with ongoing energy production, unlike having to pay thousands of people to keep digging holes in the earth or blowing up mountains?

I would think a spike in initial jobs associated with manufacturing and installing solar and wind farms followed by a massive drop off in jobs needed to maintain those farms is a sign of success, not failure.

No, there WERE jobs created - just not as many as he had hoped. Do you think he can do everything on his own?? Remember, he's working with the MOST OBSTRUCTIONIST OPPOSITION IN HISTORY and their only goal is to defeat him while unemployed Americans are just "collateral damage"!!!

Do you need examples of what lies look like?

Dick Cheney - "Deficits don't matter".
Donald Rumsfeld on the Iraq war "Five days or five months, but it certainly isn't going to last longer."
George W. Bush "Iraq has weapons of mass destruction".

What a shame the "MOST OBSTRUCTIONIST OPPOSITION IN HISTORY" includes many in his own party. The Democrats had both houses for his first 2 years.
Deficit spending by Bush was called "unpatriotic" by the candidate Obama. I guess that makes him extremely "unpatriotic". To liberals, lies are what republicans do and misspeak is what democrats do. Give me a break.

while we continue to debate and haggle about the merit of green industry and jobs, fighting over to continue to spend our money on old energy source. other countries like germany, china, brazil and even india are moving ahead on creating green energy while decreasing their need for any imported energy. due to our lack of will and investment, china now owns the solar panel industry, an industry we created. we continue to be willing to dig more depleting fossil fuel and sending billions of dollar to other country, while enriching the greed oil industry. what we need to do is focus our time and money on energy sources that can immediate make an impact on our energy use, job creation and reducing our dependency on foreign energy. right now, the only thing stopping a wide spread use of natural gas cars and electric cars is the fueling and charging infrastructure. as nice as it is to focus on long term energy needs and tech, we need to look to what can make an impact right now. and build the natural gas and electric fueling and charging stations, would create jobs immediately, increase the revenue and price for his car and the energy, which goes to local domestic companies. it would have an immediate effect on our importation of oil and how help reduce our debt. all this is blocked by republicans and their misguilded ideas.

Because we are controlled by a dirty energy Oligarchy that is determined to break our Democracy and turn the U.S. into a Third World Energy state- AmericaStan.

The drill-baby-drill crowd seems to actually believe (of course they are really emotionally manipulated with culture issues) that there are barrels marked "U.S. Only" while at the same time rabidly opposing any hint of industry nationalization.
The goal of the Oligarchs is to buy the politicians, crush the people and throw out the regulations. The resources they acquire (for free) are sold to the world market, not used for 'Energy Independence". The people get nothing (except those lay-about Socialists in Alaska).

Last year the U.S. was a net petroleum exporter for the first time since 1949. Look at the price of gasoline. Look at unemployment. Look at the Tea Party calling the President a Socialist. Rubes.

To know your future look at Iraq, look at Nigeria. look at Pennsylvania - where a law (penned by ALEC and Gas inc) is about to take effect over-ruling all municipal zoning laws so they can drill in your back yard without being bothered with all those community laws and all that safety compliance crap.

it is incredibly disingenous to imply that somehow weatherizing and improving energy efficiency (and producing onsite clean energy) is a money-out proposition since it has been proven, over and over, that a home that uses less energy is worth a huge amount more than a leaky, crappy house.

the problem is the FHFA and their idiotic blocking of PACE loans so that regular families and businesses can borrow money cheaply with loans that stay with the property (because they are repaid through a special property tax assessment, not a personal loan) and can repay at the pace of the savings they are seeing from the improvements (weatherization, rooftop solar, passive heating/cooling, etc.).

if people could get these very low-risk loans (low risk to lender, too, because they take first lien because of the property tax connection), millions would improve their home's energy footprint, property values would shoot up, jobs would be created and money would be kept in homeowner's pockets instead of bleeding out to Big Energy. So you have to wonder why all our policies in this country (Dem and GOP) are designed to keep people opening a vein for Big Energy, then you have to fight back.

PACE loans and European style feed in tariffs would revolutionize the jobs, energy, housing and local economies for the better - what are we waiting for?
