Religion is a tool of the evil.
03:05 AM on 04/16/2012
Religion allows people to feel good about where they are and what they are doing mostly because it validates their need to belong to something even if it is a mythological ideal that's time has surpassed it's usefulness and is now used more for the furthering of racism, closed communities, backwards thinking, control over large numbers of people, placating the ignorant into not thinking for themselves and best of all, being used to tout superiority of their own religion over other religions simply because they say it is better.

Wonder why people on this website try and bash religion at every chance they get.

The Huffington Post represents such a small minority it's unbelievable they actually think their views are in the mainstream.

Majority vs minority isn't the issue.

The issue is truth vs fiction.

Because delusion is more palatable than realty.

Uuuf! Lucky them, as a gay man I'm sure I have years shaved off of my life and quality of living as a result of having to contend with religious fundamentalists and institutions that collude to impede my ability to live in peace with the world....

Fear of hell sure as hell doesn't give one the right to make another's life a living hell!

Right there with ya. But i enjoy bashing them back. Makes me a bit more feisty.

And that's the truth. One of the fundamental tenets of modern Christianity (which the only religion I can express experience with) is 'judge not lest ye be judged'.

Word!

The statistics are conveniently left out. Any people who have a strong connection with other people are typically healthier, even if it's not religiously based, so therefore it has nothing to do with religion.

Religion is definitely not so healthy for all of the groups that religious people vent their hatred contempt and violence against.

Correct. there is nothing healthy in believing in sin, original sin, guilt, hate, being judgemental, and exclusion.

I lived in the Midwest for a few years while the husband was in the military. Sit and watch people exit a church in Arkansas or Missouri sometime. I have a seriously hard time believing that those 300+ pound women and 400+ pound men are healthy. At all.

"There is overwhelming research evidence that people can live longer if they actively engage in formal religious activities and follow their faith's behavioral prescriptions. "

Unfortunately, you didn't post any links to the overwhelming research evidence for us to peruse. Would you please post the links to the studies?

Thanks in advance.

"Overall, they really are much healthier than the rest of us ... In some of them, the mortality rate is 25 percent, 30 percent, or even 50 percent lower, which is really astonishing."

Wake up people, you are being lied to. Think about it, "death rates", regardless of religion or anything else, are 100%. Everybody dies. The "death rate" they are talking about is the number of deaths per 100,000 population, which is how it is reported in epidemiology. You know how to have a low number of deaths per 100,000? Have a lot of kids! By and large, 100,000 old people will have a much higher death rate than 100,000 young people. So Mormons (or Catholics, or any "big family" religion) will have a "low death rate".

The actual relevant statistic, which nobody addresses, is average life expectancy. If you compare Mormons, for example, to non-faithful, at first there seems to be about a 7-year advantage for the Mormons. But when matched for relevant demographics (race, income, years of education, alcohol and tobacco use, etc.) the "God dividend" basically disappears. Educated, non-smoking, rich white people tend to have the longest life, in 21st century America, regardless of religion.
