Tybee Island was recently named the "Healthiest Beach in America."

They try really hard to keep the beach clean and to foster the survival and growth of the sea turtles.

People here are peeeeiiisssssed about this!!

We have noticed more fast food trash littering streets than ever before. Recently, we were stopped at a red signal light and a woman in a car ahead of us took the opportunity to clean her car, opened her driver side door and threw the trash into the intersection. We have witnessed more people throwing their trash from their parked cars in parking lots and watching it blow into the wind. The lack of respect is stunning and it is flourishing in all age and gender groups.

I really don't think Loretta Heyward is helping anything here....just more irresponsibility.

She says she doesn't know how Orange Crush came to be associated with SSU.....

...ummmmm because the event known as OC is a spring break party for SSU students!!!!

Geez, will anybody take responsibility here?!

Savannah State University is a black university in Savannah. Tybee Island is a white community.

The perception here is that the blacks get off on going down and trashing a white community.

I don't know if that's true, but I do know that it does not reflect well on these students. And by the way, there are trash cans all over the beach on Tybee.

i dont even think its about black or white so please lets not start this debate!! I beg you!!!! There are plenty of white people that throw trash on the ground just like any other race.. this is simply about ignorant careless people who could care less about keeping earth as clean as possible and also keeping the wildlife safe from harmful trash

What I am trying to tell the rest of America is that debate IS going on right here, right now.

I know it is hard to understand suchthings if you don't live here....because I am a transplant, and the race war is alive and well here, and I was not prepared for that.

If it's unsanctioned why not preak it up as it is forming? When you let it go on and then complain later, you kind of get what you allow.
02:09 PM on 04/24/2012
How do you "preak" something?

We had beach parties back home every weekend and NEVER left a mess like that. This is pathetic.

I understand that people like to party; however, I will never understand the mentality of just throwing your garbage for others to deal with. But it's in training. How many parents allow their kids to have a pig sty of a room? How many never insist their kids do their own laundry, wash their own dishes or clean the bathroom? How many never point out to their kids the environmental and monetary cost of garbage? Oh yes, parents are so stressed and so tired, blah, blah, blah. More reason to teach your kids to contribute rather than always take.

Oh, and how many people never say "boo" when they see someone else trashing? (I do.) how many never call their city or a business about garbage on their property? (I do.) How many never take part in neighborhood/community clean-ups? (I do.) So, the garbage flows both ways. We need to be stewards of our planet, not users.

Here in Savannah this has become a racial issue-- like everything else-- and this small town continues to suffer under a shifting demographic: blacks now comprise more than 60% of the city with the outlying areas predominantly white...and the city is being run into the ground. As for Orange Crush, this one-day affair netted 18 arrests-- six felonies, three for guns-- from an overwhelmed police force that admits it is afraid to wade into the fray out of concern for "officer safety". Trash on the beach is only part of the story: these "students" urinate and defecate in public, commit sex acts in the open, trespassing on private property to do so, and threaten residents if they call the cops. I don't care what color you are, if you lived on Tybee, you would not condone this kind of activity from anyone.

Just like "freaknik" in Atlanta several years back. Even the black city leaders came out against that one and eventually killed it.

Next time have the governor deploy the National Guard.

Well most of the pollution on the roads is alcohol related, bottles, cans, and cases, oh and sometimes wrecks...

People have no respect, no consideration, no pride in themselves. Must've been an OWS crowd having a beach bash!

What a shame. That's such a beautiful beach community - thanks to the volunteers who worked so hard cleaning up these hooligan's trash.

How many trash cans were on the beach before the party? How often did they get emptied? Was the party monitored for people littering and citations issued?
12:57 PM on 04/24/2012
If you are an adult and had respect you wouldn't look for excuses, like no trash cans, was there signs. Adults don't have to have these things, you simply cleanup after yourself, problem solved!

public beaches are required to supply not only trash cans for trash but also restroom facilities. this beach has none of the above. they are unequiped to handle even regular visitors to their beach much less anything else

Well apparently that didn't work out or there would not be a problem at all. Personally, I am not looking for excuses but the questions need to be asked if one wants solutions. If someone would have been monitoring for litter and writing citations, the city could have gained a little bit of revenue plus made their point. Complaining "after the fact" rarely solves problems, it just leads to extremes that affect everyone.

I lived on Tybee for 3 years. There are trash cans (big ones) all over the place, at any time of year.
