Do Republicans love gay fetuses?
03:52 PM on 04/30/2012
Does Obesity really have to be a partisan issue? For most people it should be about simple math. Figure out your BMR and then how active you are. Eat less calories than that. Only 500 less a day will net you more than a pound a week of weight loss.

For the rest, see a doctor.

Precisely. You only need to have a calorie deficit of 3500 calories per week, and you'll start losing the weigh. If you even it out, that's a relatively small amount per day. What's usually best is to eat a balanced diet with some fruit and vegetables, and eat less in general. It works for me :)

There is a great new diet where you can eat all you want of whatever food you want....

But you must eat at a table full of naked fat people!

Within a few meals, people would get desensitized to what you are hoping would be an appetite reducer.

blah blah blah the corporations run this country and stand to make huge profits by attributing to the national obesity epidemic in numerous ways... and this isn't going to change anytime soon. this entire article could have been summarized in one sentence.

While I don't necessarily disagree with you, I have managed to maintain my weight at a normal level for more decades than I care to share. At some point people do have to take responsibility for their own actions. And if they are overweight THEY have to eat less, exercise more etc.

I used to be fat, despite being athletic growing up. Now, I look better, as if I am twenty years younger, in the words of my brother. I took a prescription for about eight years that makes people gain weight. Finally, I had had enough and invested in a personal trainer. I lost about thirty pounds through non-stop exercise. This fall will mark twenty years living with schizophrenia for me, so sometimes it is hard to be a 'shining example' f physical fitness and health while taking ap drugs. Anyway, I know what it's like to be overweight and unattractive, but we all have our inner lion, and some of us can unleash it, particularly if we are given time to exercise on the job. We have already short-changed our children with the sugary, salty, unhealthy food we provide for them while simultaneously talking about how we live in the best country on Earth. There is no reason to be mean to obese people, but I think the time has come to crack the whip a little bit. The federal government could lead the way with mandatory exercise for all of its employees, screw the unions. Say what you want about the postal service, at least their 'boots on the ground' (sarcasm intended) get the job done. The same is not necessarily true about some of the slobs in white collar positions.

Any number of posters have pointed out that it costs more to eat healthy. I don't believe this is true, but for those that say "A Big Mac is cheaper than apples," I say, fine - but there's nothing that says you have to eat the whole Big Mac.

I think comparing a Big Mac to an apple is silly. An apple is maybe a healthy snack but not a full meal.
04:08 PM on 04/30/2012
A Big Mac is not food, it's filler.
05:50 PM on 04/30/2012
I didn't make that comparison up. Go back and look at the thread.

Expecting people to live in perpetual hunger is not reasonable. A Big Mac is quite dense in terms of packing a lot of calories and not really filling you up.
05:57 PM on 04/30/2012
No one expects anyone to live in perpetual hunger. The Big Mac/apple price comparison was actually made earlier on this thread. It was intended here only as a metaphor for the healthy vs. unhealthy food comparison. According to McDonalds, a Big Mac has 540 calories and contains about half a normal diet's fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium. And if it doesn't fill you up, that's even worse.

There's a celebrity chef who proved that he can feed school children in public schools a nutritious meal using good quality unprocessed foods for the same amount as buying cans of slop and pink slime. "children are our most precious resource"? Total lip service from all kinds of adults who should (and probably do) know better. Guess who profits from feeding our children bad food in schools? The big six food conglomerates.

My Dad's friend just had his foot amputated and then died 3months later.
He never took care of the diabetes that had been diagnosed 20 years ago.
If you don't take care of your body, it will come back to haunt.
That's not discrimination, it's the cold hard truth.

Everyone has the right to be as obese as they can be, yet sticking others with their super-sized premiums is borderline rude. If one cannot afford healthcare insurance and expect others to afford it for them, they can at least stay within the appropriate BMI. Last time I checked, eating a few less calories and doing crunches do not pose financial hardship.

Ahhh here come the children to prattle on about free choices.

Economic policies favor junk food. The government is literally subsidizing junk food. You want to talk about choices? I'm talking choice. The government should be choosing to let foods compete on an even playing ground, not favoring junk food. Let's stop making junk food artificially cheap and see how long America keeps buying it at the current rate.

Got that child? Because I don't want to have to rap you on the ears again. Go prattle elsewhere. Your little libertarian wanna-be speech doesn't work because tax and subsidy policy is favoring the junk.

In theory you are correct - we all have the power to make healthy choices. In practice, many people buy cheap food. Food is made cheap through subsidies.
Ironically, the US government subsidizes those foods that it tells us to eat less of (corn and thus corn syrup, for example).
