Hey Republican working men and women, I'm curious if you think overtime should be paid if you work over 40 hrs a week? I'm also curious if you were aware of a GOP bill that would have amended the overtime requirements from anything over 40 hours in one week to anything over 80 hours in a two week period. That's right, they need you to work a few extra hours this week so they just cut your hours back next and woola no overtime pay! Guess who stepped in and succesfully lobbied against it? The AFL/CIO that's who!

I used to have to work 44 hours a week but get paid for 40 at minimum wage. It was called a "salary". The boss told us one day that the labor people were coming, but they had been there before and nothing happened. He said, "They don't care about you". That was in the early 70's. After all that, he called me in one day and gave me a "raise" . I KNEW he was just paying me for that 4 hours. They must have cared, after all.

They cared indeed and if they knew about any other unpaid overtime going further back you would have gotten that as well! Also many salaried employees are covered by overtime laws as well.

guess what? States determine the hours and overtime conditions. In some states if you work more than 8 hours in a day it is overtime, in other states if you work more than 40 hours its overtime. I work on fed government contracts and we are not allowed overtime and its demanded that we work 45 hours a week but only get paid for 40. Doesn't matter if the week ends on one day and the new pay week starts the next day, you do not get a day off or overtime.

Federal law mandates the minimum wage of at least $7.25/hr and overtime pay of at least time and one half the regular hourly rate for all hours over 40 in one week for covered employees. States can mandate a higher minimum wage and higher overtime rates but they can't be less than what the federal government mandates. Have you seen those placards that employers are required by law to post in a conspicuous place posted explaining the minimum wage and overtime requirements? Call the phone number and explain your delima and I'm sure that situation will be resolved and if any mandated overtime pay was not paid in the past, you and your workmates will get back pay as well. Good luck!

Walmart has cut positions mostly by attrition . They try to keep hours at or below 40 hrs a week. The chain is trying to keep prices at or below the the other stores. Everyone has a choice where they want to shop but most people go where they can afford the goods. If unions set into Wal-mart the doors will close and everyone will loose

Insulting others is uncalled for. It's not a way to treat another person when they express their opinion.

If what you say is true then how can Costco start their new hires out at $17/hr, pay for more benefits, be price competitive and keep their doors open?

How much are they spending on lawyers to dispute this stuff?? You can bet it is more than they would have paid the employees in the first place.

The "Three Strikes You Are Out" law should apply to corporations.

After all, they are people too.

AGREED. "Justice" for individuals is not the same for corporations, even though when corporations break laws they affect more people's lives. Go figure.

Walmart employees, for god sakes, get a union!
09:34 PM on 05/02/2012
why not then you can share your meager wage with the union so you can belong to the union. Thats really smart

It is indeed really smart when you consider workers who have a union earn an average of $10,400 more per year than non union workers! Google union vs non union pay for more info.

Maybe they need to keep on moving to other countries where they can bribe officials and pay workers a few dollars a day?

And didn't they say that they supported American companies by buying "American"? What happened to that?
07:56 PM on 05/02/2012
Wow, just think, if they just paid a fair wage, and followed through with fair labor practices, all that money could have gone into employee incentive programs, and benefits.

I work at Walmart as a night stocker and what they do as far as overtime hours (NOT) in my store is they have us come in later than our scheduled shift. They expect us to do 8 hours of work in 5-6 hours. Three quarters of us stockers are over the age of 55 and they want us to do the job of a 20 year old. Granted we accepted the job but this new way of clocking our time we spend stocking started after all of us old farts had been with them for several years. Walmart screws everyone including customers. Yes, I'm looking elsewhere. I have never been treated like **** in all my working years like I have with this company.

NO. Not everybody is like Walmart. I heard some bad things about them when they first came in. Really bad things. Right now, Dollar Store is really making a dent in their sales. I saw the aisles getting wider for "easier shopping", or something like that, but I know it's to cut stock because it's not selling like it did. and the quality is down. The selection is boring. Dollar Store placed a little community store about every 12 miles so they catch people before they head out to the wally world. Brilliant! New Dollar Stores everywhere! OUCH!

I would rather pay $3 for a $1 item than shop at Walmart. The last time I counted Walmart had lost suits filed by employees in 16 states. I just refuse to support a company that treats its employees so consistently poorly.
