This better be overturned on appeal. He never mentions anyone by name and asks the question if its the fault of the state or the fault of the parents as to why our youth is in such trouble. Regardless of how you feel about Trayvon Martin or George Zimmerman, you should be appalled that someones free speech was taken and he never attacked or mentioned anyone by name.

Im not saying hes a great person, Im not saying anything about him.  Im saying he did nothing that warrants any type of disciplinary action.  He spoke his mind and asked a question.  He did not attack any one person in particular.  It is not a matter of how you feel about what he said, its matter of a persons basic rights in America.

What part of "public servant" do you not understand?
And he mentions Corey and Zimmerman. And you read the statement and think he's Plato?
He can have free speech, but he can't retire on full benefits and live off the state after 20 years, either. He clearly cannot fulfill his duties. Sadly, too many people in public service do it for the money they can make sitting on their asses later. There is a system that get milked and bilked at great cost to the tax payer, too.

I am a public worker in Florida, and on our annual evaluation is a diversity section on how we treat all constituents that we serve.

How does that apply to comments made outside of work and not associated with your job? This guy had 8 years of commendations regarding the people he served.

That is appropriate to the extent it extends to on-the-job actions. Not appropriate if used to muzzle your civil rights.

Administrators need to know the difference.

It depends on what you're job entails. Would you want a doctor who speaks desparagingly about his patients to take care of you? Or, a teacher that ridicules and criticize children to teach you children? A racist judge to decide cases involving people who are not of his race? What you do for a living matters. If he was a janitor, what he said would not have gotten him into trouble, but as a person stated above, "While Capt. Beckmann should be able to practice his 1st Amendment protections," wrote a Facebook commenter, "being that he is a 'leader' in the MDFR organization I seriously question his judgment and ability to make good sound decisions, especially where the community he supposedly protects is concerned." I completely agree with that statement.

I by no means excuse the statement made . This guy , what can you say he's just so brainwashed only thing is his family got caught in the storm . Trayvons parents are without a son they loved very much and as for this mans opinion it's wrong to speak of any one in that manner that you don't know squat about . You may think it but do not say it or print it if you aren't prepared for the fall out . Especially if you are in the public eye . I'll bet those words don't taste quite so good today . All the name calling and slams against each other will never bring back Trayvon and to keep this garbage going on and on is a waste of time . I send my deepest felt compassion to the Martin family they lost what most parents never will loose . And they will make the adjustments , Because of who they are .

This whole story has been divided in two distinct sections and that's why it is a failure from the police department on the case of Martin to both the liberal & conservative media. There is some truth in that in for a large percentage of AA children there is a complete failure of parenting. His unfortunate choice of words and doing it on a public forum should rightfully cost him his job.

What a poor example of a Supervisor of any kind. Well a poor example a Man without a moral compass at all. I was in Management and if you read right in your requirements you represent the company on and off grounds. Mostly in a County or Govt job your actions are very visible. I almost wonder if he was drunk when he wrote this because he should have known better. It's unbelieveable to me how many people are so cruel when a young man is dead. Would you like it if someone made fun of your son if he were dead? It's incomprehensible to me that somehow people can come to judgement so easily without any compassion or respect for the deceased. All of this could have been avoided seriously. Now people like this person who should have been held in high regard fell from his post for being cruel.

He was speaking about the ghetto hoodie crowd...he along with cops in these areas know the truth. But, the libs need to suppress the truth and live in their fantasy land where everyone is sweet and innocent. The violence in these inter-city areas will continue until people speak out about it.

The only problem that I have with his statement is that he never took into consideration that Trayvon wasn't doing anything wrong and while at one point TM ws going towards Z, he then retreated and started moving away from Zimmerman which is when Z started following him. he claims in his rant above that Z was being pre judged but didn't he pre judge Trayvon in his own statement?
09:33 PM on 05/19/2012
Trayvon beat a smaller physically defenseless man for a full minute in a mixed martial arts style while the guy screamed for help. This is technically doing something wrong. Excuses could be made if Trayvon punched him and didn't continue with a beat down, but beating someone that isn't hitting you back has nothing to excuse it.

Following a dangerous stranger may be foolish, but its perfectly legal.

When can we expect to see any public employees that advocated violence against Zimmerman demoted or fired, or is this another special double standard?

What are you on? He beat down a smaller physically defenseless man with mixed martial arts style while he screamed for help? WHAT book did you get that out of? Because none of us have read it. Your poor defenseless man had a GUN.

People that stalk you can be killers. You have every right to protect yourself.

You are on Planet Zimmerman. Stay there. Mixed martial arts style HA!!!
07:18 AM on 05/20/2012
Mikado Cat - were you there when the confrontation between Martin and Zimmerman took place? I'm so tired of everyone talking about who was at fault when none of us were there. Hell, some of the people who lived there have said they didn't see anything and yet those of us who were miles away act as if were there. Can we all just wait for the trial?
06:24 PM on 05/28/2012
Zimmerman is stopped in his truck just past the turn on I think its called Twin Tree, facing the clubhouse. Confusion I think many have is the assumption that Zimmerman drives up Retreat View circle going east toward the main gate. Some have claimed Zimmerman drives his truck along Retreat View circle as Trayvon walks along it. I have found nothing to support that claim, with evidence only as I stated that Zimmerman is stopped on Twin Tree just after the turn facing the clubhouse (west).

Trayvon likely enters the complex from the open, no wall, west top corner, and walks toward the clubhouse near the gate. Zimmerman claims Trayvon is not walking, but standing around looking at the houses, like someone would do if they were talking on a cell phone and in no hurry to go home.

Trayvon doesn't need to be doing anything wrong, he only needs to appear to be acting in a suspicious manner, like he would be if talking on his cell with a head set.

When Trayvon sees Zimmerman he continues east towards him, passes by his truck, then runs toward the rear gate (which is where Brandy's condo is located).
07:36 AM on 05/18/2012
He is certainly entitled to his own opinion, but it does not mean its an accurate statement. He does not personally know anything about Trayvon Martins parents. As a person in a leadership position, he should have been intelligent enough to restrain from expressing his bigot thoughts and put more thought into his statement before opening his mouth. It might have saved his job and self respect.

Let us not forget this was a life taken. Use the common sense that God gave you. If Mr. Zimmerman had listen to the dispatcher none of this would have happen, Trayvon would be alive. He could have easily fired and killed an innocent person in their home. Was he wrong ? yes. murder ? No, manslaughter ? yes.
09:38 PM on 05/19/2012
Third suspension in the first half of his junior year, Trayvon should have been grounded at home, and none of this would have happened.

Walking around where you live, running around, following anybody you want for any reason. LEGAL

Punching someone and beating them, not legal.

What's your claim, that Zimmerman was asking for a beating? Maybe a good beating would straighten him out. Familiar filthy thinking.
07:21 PM on 05/20/2012
So what you're saying is its Trayvons parent(s) fault for not grounding him. Maybe, then, he would be alive?

Regardless of everything involved, speaking your mind and then facing the consequences is very American and very much in line with your freedom of speech. He wrote his rant, he now pays the price. He was unrepentant at first, claiming his right to express himself. Of course now he regrets it. A demotion is still better than getting fired. He got what he deserved... I can't wait for the day he goes into Trayvon's neighborhood to do his duty. Karma is not done with him yet.

Currently suffering in England this week isn't it?

I expect they will be suffering even more as more details of their son's savage assault on a smaller man is revealed. Beating someone in a mixed martial arts style for a full minute while he screams for help is a nasty legacy.

Seriously, we don't know all the facts yet. If someone started with me, I'd use my training as well. But we don't know what happened, so don't speculate. The smaller man could've easily avoided the altercation, so what is your point? What does England have to do with this? Wow.

Remember Perry Mason? Atty asks quetion he knows is out of bounds and the judge overrules, but the thought is put in the minds of the jurors.

Here, the politician blows his horn, takes an action he probably knows is illegal. It probably will be overruled, but the city will always remember him as the guy who tried to stand up for the poor ghetto folks earning him thousands more votes, which is what he's really concerned about.

In a more modern context, watching a few episodes of "Blue Bloods" usually produces a lesson or two on the relationship between elected officials and the people who have to do a difficult job.
