We all knew he was gay from the start. He didn't have to come out the closet..he was never in it.He should have won american idol that year but some washed up rap artist won.Don't here much from Ruben now....

Rap singer? Ruben Stoddard? He was NOT a rapper at all and was too young to be a washed up anything yet. Besides he has a successful career at what he is really good at and inspired by ... Gospel music.

I am not 'red state', but definitely am the middle, swayable crowd Clay talked about. I carried with me socially inherited bias from growing up in a household and community with conservative values. Just want to point out how important and impactful it is for celebrities to normalise gay and to highlight gay issues. I now fully support gay rights and same sex marriage and cannot believe the struggle ppl have to go through just to have equal rights or just to be who they are. I know that in years to come, this will no longer be an issue but for now we have to stand up for equality.

I can't tell you how happy it makes me to read something like this. I have been a gay rights activist for over 30 years, and there are days when I wholly despair of the human race. Knowing that people can, and are willing to, think outside of their upbringing restores my faith in humanity.

And while I am very very very much not a fan of Mr. Aiken, his point about there having to be a Malcolm X in order for a Dr. King to be heard is squarely on the mark. I long for the day when Clay Aiken's normal and Adam Lambert's normal BOTH become nothing more than two more hash marks on the wide scale of normal human sexuality.

I actually used to enjoy that show. Haven't watched since Trump showed his vile colors.

The last time I watched Idol was when Clay didn't win as he obviously should have. I never watch CA but I hope to read that he has won it just the same. I love his voice and I hope he continues to be a political pundit. I was impressed he could sit next to that Perkins "person" and debate. He's stronger than I am!

I used to watch American Idol when Clay was on and I always thought he was a good man of sound character and intelligent, talented too. He has proved me right!

He should have won. Remember his rendition of "A bridge over troubled water?" It was so good, I still haven't forgotten that's what he sang! I also never watched the show after that.
I hope he continues to do political shows.

He really was one of a kind on that show. My favorite song was Unchained Melody. It was something special

Clay Aiken is gay?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?! ;-)

I'm glad he's gotten comfortable with who he is and is able to embrace it and share it with others in a productive and encouraging way. Kudos to you, Mr. Aiken.

Nobody's taken any rights away from anyone. You just can't marry a dude if you're a dude. That special ceremony has been going around 8,000 years now. Can't change it because in your mind you lost your right to do so.

By that token, slavery should still exist and women should not have the vote. Would you have us all living by the unexpanded level of human rights that existed 8,000 years ago?

In a word, yes. Teapublicans are already doing their best to make sure Blacks, Hispanics and the poor cannot vote anymore and women will be next.

Aiken is another case of "15 minutes of fame" lasting much too long.

Well brace yourself because the first 10 years were amazing and the next 10 years are going to be incredible.

Good luck on Celebrity Apprentice tomorrow, Clay! This is a great interview and I hope you continue your advocacy.

Insightful, smart, and funny interview. Clay has become a wonderful advocate, and I always learn something when he speaks about it. Kudos Mr. Signorile, it's always refreshing to hear a great interview. I hope you have a follow-up soon.

Good luck Clay! #clayforthewin

Outstanding interview! Clay is not only cool, he is a great man.
02:40 PM on 05/19/2012
It sounds like he is more of a woman than a man sandkastles. Here is a individual who will not produce any offspring, thank God and don't have the backbone to stand up straight all the time..
03:08 PM on 05/19/2012
He has a son
03:22 PM on 05/19/2012
Um...hate to tell you this, but he does have a son. You really shouldn't speak if you have no idea what you are talking about.

Absolutely fantastic interview. I loved hearing more of his personal journey - his evolution from simply being out to be an advocate. Thank you so much for asking such intelligent questions, and just letting him talk and give full answers.
