"In the end the demons won" What a sad, sad story. In my work I have seen it so often.

RIP Mary. You now know the truth... that you were always innocent no matter what your mind tried to tell you.

Sad, somehow the dysfunctional behavior gets ignored, it's in everyone's closet.

From all reports--including eyewitnesses--Mary Kennedy had serious problems with alcohol and either resultant or causative emotional problems. All the behaviors Bobby Kennedy describes are typical of alcoholics. He should know. There's no doubt they had a troubled marriage and, as we all know, there are 2 sides to every story. Suffice it to say, she was a mess. And he bears responsibility as well. Let her rest in peace. Character assassination serve no one, including the children the shared, from the previous marriage or the shared marriage.

Let it rest. Move on.

Mental illness is so hard. For the person that has it and their families and for the deniers of mental illness.

Easy and cheap to criticize from afar. Try living with an angry, unstable alcoholic and see how long you last.

Mental illnesses need better ways of being identified. Frustration and incomprehension seem to be the first and only reactions to the sick before we see they're truly sick. By then it may be too late.

Unfortunately, most of the time the mentally ill are too ill to realize they are the ones with the issues and reject anyone's offers to help, etc. So once they are adults, they have to be left to make their own changes. Many times that is not possible so they continue to drink or take drugs and get worse and worse, alienating most everyone around them. Then when they have a sober moment or two they realize they have lost everything due to their own fault and it has gotten so far out of hand, that it seems like taking their own life is the only way out. I have direct experience with this in several cases, both family and non.

I am an RN who worked in the mental health field and you are correct. Unfortunately, we still have not developed very good treatment regimes for mental illness so the whole fabric of a person's life just comes unglued. and mental illness of one family member is the whole family's disease. Sadly, the children of this couple and the children from his first marriage will have years and years of problems due to this problem. As a nurse, I worked in mental health field for some time and it is a thoroughly emotionally draining experience if one cares at all for the patients. But new treatment is still developing but we are not keeping up with the problem at all. the mental illness does not just affect the ill person but the whole family suffers from the mental illness and it distorts every relationship. All of the people involved in this situation need our compassion and the details are really none of our business!
