Conservatives have no place in the 21st Century

Education from the free public school level up to the state university level is not a commodity that should be sold. Unfortunately, Republicans and TEA Party believe education is a commodity. And if they wish to see how poorly commoditized education is working, then they only need to see look at the University of Phoenix and other private for-profit schools to see the failure of their free market education experiment.

The ouster of Teresa Sullivan was nothing more than a boldfaced attempt to commoditize a UVA education with no concern over the quality of education student would receive. What wasn't mentioned was that Dragas and Kinton wanted to implement online classes for UVA students. Online learning doesn't work very well because it is meant to be a cost saving measure. Students learn much better in a class with other student and a professor.

I'm a faculty member at UVa, and we're on pins and needles awaiting the board's vote this afternoon. I don't think it's clear to anyone why certain members of the board took aim at Sullivan so quickly and with so little thought to the implications. But enough information has emerged to suggest that a few wealthy donors and BOV members believed that a public University, which is now down to 6% per year in state funding, needed to move to a business model of organization and leadership. They entirely failed to account for the devotion and respect that President Sullivan has earned from faculty, staff and administration in two short years.

So, if the governor gets the resignation of the entire board, then what? Will he just replace them with more corporate tools and political donors? Perhaps there should be a change in the way university governing boards are appointed. Instead of the governor appointing the board in it's entirety, perhaps there should be voting seats on the board from the alumni, the faculty, and the student body. The governor's political appointees should always be a minority of the board.

There's a story here that hasn't been uncovered.

There usually is, but do you have an idea what it is? Clearly, a clique on the board was outed, much to the exasperation of the governor who appointed them... I think it's a conservative Republican governor trying to exert control over those "librul eggheads over at Charlottesville" - but it couldn't be that simple, could it ;-)

Appreciate the faves from a fellow combat vet. I suspect few of our readers appreciate the meaning of that wreath on the rifle.  "Allons" from the 11th ACR.

There's a story that the govenor wanted to keep uncovered. It didn't work. His only regret is that the transition did not go quietly and was completely bungled.
