Our electrical grid, once in the hands of engineers, and entrepreneurs is now being designed, regulated, and maintained by political hacks. The weather may cause the original problem, governmental mismanagement exacerbates it. Tis the climate in our Nation's capital that is in need of change, and desperately so.

It is stupid to build office buildings with windows that do not open. It is stupid to have your power lines up on poles instead of underground.

It is intelligent to do as Ann Brown's family did, and cook up all your food and eat it rather than letting it rot. It is intelligent to keep a well-stocked pantry of things that do not go bad and can be eaten cold. It is intelligent to keep a stock of batteries for flashlights, candles, matches, and little cans of stern (in a fireproof box).

We need more intelligent people in this country, and fewer stupid politicians, fewer stupid architects, and fewer stupid people running the power companies.

Republican Governor asks Obama and the federal government for assistance:

"President Obama Declares State of Emergency in Ohio

Governor John Kasich has declared a state of emergency in Ohio and asked President Obama for Federal Disaster Assistance after severe storms caused damage and massive power outages on Friday night.

The President officially declared an emergency in the state Sunday, ordering that in addition to local and state aid, federal aid will be issued as well." ( http://fox8.com/2012/06/30/gov-kasich-declares-state-of-emergency-after-storms/ )

Yes its another very destructive storm day. Friday saw ( http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/120630_rpts.html ) about 1000 wind/damage reports to the NWS - today is getting up there and many people are still in harms way ( http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/today.html )

Those of you going on how this "wasn't so bad" should remember that. Its not over and people are still in danger.

In Nanjing, China (where it is over 100 degrees with usual 90% humidity for three months of the summer), my home has had not one power outage in three years. The USA's infrastructure and power grid should be totally rebuilt. Why electric lines are still above ground where trees can fall on them can be solved by underground utilities. Our national priorities are geared towards welfare for the wealthy, meddling abroad, and a bloated MIC.

Amen to that. If we cut the Pentagon budget from$700 billion a year to $350 billion we could bury all our power lines and rebuild our entire infrastructure with the savings.

6 days with no power is not a huge deal.
Try being a month with no power because a tornado took out the entire feeder line for a area and 3 miles has to be rebuilt from the ground up.
08:42 PM on 07/01/2012
Yeah, right. The condo and neighborhood associations would really go for generator installation en masse, the resulting noise, and the fumes.

The globally-averaged land surface temperature for May 2012 was the all-time warmest May on record, at 1.21°C (2.18°F) above average.

http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/global/

A derecho is a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. Although a derecho can produce destruction similar to that of tornadoes, the damage typically is directed in one direction along a relatively straight swath. As a result, the term "straight-line wind damage" sometimes is used to describe derecho damage. By definition, if the wind damage swath extends more than 240 miles and includes wind gusts of at least 58 mph or greater along most of its length, then the event may be classified as a derecho.

Special hazards posed by strong derechos in urban areas
A hazard of particular significance in urban areas is the vulnerability of electrical lines to high winds and falling trees. In addition to posing a direct hazard to anyone caught below the falling lines, derecho damage to overhead electric lines sometimes results in massive, long-lasting power outages. Hundreds of thousands of people may be affected; in the worst events, power may not be restored for many days. It is the dense concentration of overhead distribution feeders in urban areas, and their frequent proximity to large shade trees, that make cities especially vulnerable to electrical outages following wind storms.

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley has made a ridiculous and dumb demand that the power company restore power as soon as possible (less than the 6-plus days they said the job would require). This governor apparently hasn't the foggiest idea how the power system works nor the damage that severe storms can do. Power companies have to fix the burnt out and disconnected main substations (like distribution centers), then work down to the individual localities. They have to turn off power, cut down and cut up trees, move the debris, put up poles, reattach everything before power can be restored. You got hit by a hurricane. Maybe the governor should check with Florida officials for what they do when it takes weeks to restore power.

Here's a little science lesson for all you global warming "thumpers".

The word "derecho" was coined by Dr. Gustavus Hinrichs, a physics professor at the University of Iowa, in a paper published in the American Meteorological Journal in 1888.

A derecho (pronounced similar to "deh-REY-cho" in English, or pronounced phonetically as "") is a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. Although a derecho can produce destruction similar to that of tornadoes, the damage typically is directed in one direction along a relatively straight swath. As a result, the term "straight-line wind damage" sometimes is used to describe derecho damage. By definition, if the wind damage swath extends more than 240 miles (about 400 kilometers) and includes wind gusts of at least 58 mph (93 km/h) or greater along most of its length, then the event may be classified as a derecho.

Hmmm. 1888? How can that be?

its a pointless post by7 someone that thought the word derecho was just invented Friday I suppose.

Incidentally its not even as old as the science of climate change:

1859 Tyndall discovers that some gases block infrared radiation. He suggests that changes in the concentration of the gases could bring climate change.

1896 Arrhenius publishes first calculation of global warming from human emissions of CO2

1897 Chamberlin produces a model for global carbon exchange including feedbacks.
