I am a little surprised and disappointed, that some many people would identify as liberal would have this opinion. Voter fraud is not a serious issue. There are very, very few confirmed incidences of voter fraud.

Redistricting and voter id laws are meant to suppress the vote of the poor and minorities.

It is so sad that so much time and effort is being placed on solving a problem that does not exist, and yet when there is a call for reasonable discussion around gun control, people fall to the floor clutching there hearts as if any limitation on the types of guns or weaponry that should be legal for purchase is killing a freedom and their life as they know it.

I just moved to Florida, went to a Tax Collector's office (as they call them down here), and got my ID and registered to vote. I do understand that poor people have greater concerns on their minds other than voting....eating would be one of those concerns.

Seems to me, that the Obama campaign would head to battle ground states or Red states where impoverished people can't afford ID's, set up shop outside the Tax Collectors, DPS, MVA (wherever ID is distributed in your state) and provide financial assistance to those who cannot afford identification. Race shouldn't be an issue....this service should be for any and all Americans who want to vote.

Financial assistance? Yeah right. Everyone is going to get behind that...NOT! States have alternate ways of proving your status other than ID. Every time you move here in Texas you have to go through a PIB process to get your new card. They send a new one out every year. And there is already a process for people who don't have an ID card. So all the foolishness about making people have an ID is just for show and is just another way to take people's rights away. Yes of course this is something that Texas is all over because h e l l it's Texas and you know we have quite the repuation for taking the low road.

There is nothing wrong with requiring voter identification, per se. However, as voting is a constitutional right, a right that makes this country a democracy..the question has to be asked as to why, suddenly, when we have a man of color as our President running for re-election, is it an issue? Why not four years ago? Why not ten years ago? In order to obtain a voter ID, it should be at no cost...and the procedure to obtain it should not be a minefield of hoops and targeted steps that are fully intended to discourage the poor and minorities and others to get an I.D. Issue them in schools, churches, governmental offices...places where most anybody has access and places where they can go if they have no transportation or a way to get to some distanced location. Voting should be encouraged..not discouraged. The GOP uses Voter ID to extract qualified voters from the process..just as they do when they gerrymander districts to shift the racial profile of a voting district. The evidence is clear that the GOP is not interested in a democracy..but rather..a totalitarian state under the control and domination of their party. That, people, is not a democratic endeavor.

Try getting into a Federal Building without a ID! In Hawaii, you must provide proof of citizenship to get ANY license. Surely voting is more important than a license! Might I add Hawaii is a progressive run Democratic State!

Again, I am a Democrat and have no problem with requiring vote ID..or some form of ID like a driver's license with a photo. What I have a problem with it stuffin the process down the throats of the poor who cannot pay, not making the ID's easily obtainable by anybody, and doing it in a presidential election year. Why now? Why not in 2009?
04:25 PM on 07/22/2012
Because during those times, we received the impression that all people were being served, not just Democrats. All prior presidents indicated that they wanted to serve all the people, and adopted a bi-partisan approach to effective govern the nation. This is essential for a black and white president, and by Obama not using this approach, will leave us divided. We all know that a successful president is one that governs all the people. We don't want Obama to be our first black president, we wont him to be our First Black Succerssful President.
06:02 PM on 07/22/2012
There is no doubt Obama is a racist and has divided the country in many different ways. You are right that a successful president is one that governs all the people. Obama does not represent everyone, just his chosen few. It is crucial to vote for Romney to have a president for all the people.

To all those racism deniers, every group studied had racial resentment from over 1/3 to over 1/2 of them. We have a long way to go as a nation.

no every study shown in this article is showing has racial resentment. you have to keep in mind the source. its only racist if they let white people vote. without this ID

It's not easy for the very poor, the disabled, and the very elderly. Very poor people usually have no car (and, therefore, no license), no money to buy an ID (even $5 may be a lot of money for them), and live a long distance from the DMV. If a voter ID is required, it should be free (and too the state documents required to get it) and should not be especially difficult to obtain. Disabled and elderly people should be give free transportation and assistance to acquire their voter id; and it should be expedited (because waiting or standing in line may be a hardship). If, as voter ID supporters claim, voter fraud (and not voter suppression), is what concerns them, assisting the poor, disabled, and elderly should bring no objections.

I don't care what any stupid polls show. The simple fact of the matter is that Tea/Republicans don't campaign for the vote, they prefer to either buy votes and/or prevent people from voting by making them get unobtainable or expensive IDs in order to vote.

When a political party has no message at all except to attack the middle class, then they have to have some kind of leverage for the next election. It never ends. THIS is what they do time and time again.

Not gonna work. I, for one, am going to be happy to participate in the total and utter destruction of the entire Tea/Republican Party with my vote on November 6, 2012.

Obama/Biden 2012! AND a Democratic Party majority in both the House and the Senate!

The Black community wants to part of the mainstreaM, but only want to it , the way they choose.
If the Whites didn't have to have a picture ID, they'd be marching (in the streets) to make certain they had that 'picture ID'. So, come on, who are thr real racists?

Every single news media that speaks against voter ID NEVER EVER trys to make a case that there is no voter fraud. Instead, just as appears in the above report, they make the claim that there is no "significent" voter fraud. Well, I myself do not want to make it easy for EVEN one person to cancel out my vote by them committing voter fraud. Do you want your vote cancelled out? Like another posted advised, grow up, be responsible and for hardly any trouble or money get a valid photo ID. You can't cash a check, drive a car, obtain a credit card, get medical services, get on an airplane, apply for free government services, apply for SSA, Medicare, Medicaid or food stamps without photo ID. Why is it such a big deal to obtain and use photo ID. Some people just want to always play the victim of something or the other.

"""Black, Latino, low-income and younger voters are all less likely to have official government identification -""" What happened to "it hurts the elderly?"

My kid in high school has to wear a photo ID every day or I have to pay a fine - the kids cannot attend dances, proms, etc. without these photo ID cards....- The school system says this policy is to protect the legitimate school kids from the people who are not authorized to be in the school ...
09:26 AM on 07/22/2012
You do realize that several state's proposals will NOT accept student ID's for voting purposes. However, gun permits ARE accepted. It's not the requirement to have an ID, it's the type of ID required and the docs. required to get those IDs that is the concern.

Shark attacks are more likely than voter fraud. You are disenfranchising hundreds of thousands to prevent one or two from voting "illegally" ... which is nearly always found to be someone voting at the wrong place or whatever. Organized voter fraud is nonexistent.

What this really comes down to is people not liking that black people can vote. Racist.
12:08 PM on 07/22/2012

12:57 PM on 07/22/2012
"You're sure???" Are you ret@rded? The whole purpose of these laws is to prevent some people from voting. That's evil, unAmerican, and unconstitutional. That you are defending it shows you have NO understanding of history or voting in the US.

just like a liberal to insult people that question things. and by the way this is not racist. if a white person doesnt have this ID they cant vote either. and just to let you know most states already of voting ID laws. and i am right now looking to see what steps it takes to get this ID. why dont you do the same instead of just rambling or insulting people. or are you to slow (i dont use the word you use kind of hateful) to learn the steps you need to take to get this ID

My offer still stands. I'd be willing to help anyone who wants to vote get proper identification, even if it means driving them to the DMV or helping them research on obtaining a birth certificate. My original BC was so tattered that the seal was no longer raised and the GA. DMV wouldn't accept it, even though I had a DL from South Carolina. Less than a week, and $35, I was able to get a brand new one from my state of birth. We need to stop fooling around in the court, throwing away good money at lawyers and use those funds to help those get ID'ed.

Without voter ID what prevents illegal immigrants from voting? When I registered to vote in California all I had to do was fill out a registration form. As far as I know the only thing they checked was that the street address was valid. Does anyone out there know how else they verify at the registrar of voters?

Do you believe illegal immigrants vote in significant numbers? What currently stops them? It could explain why Democrats fight voter ID as well as why they fall over themselves to undermine immigration enforcement.
