The author states that Einstein "didn't believe in heaven and hell as payments for good or bad lives". Ironically (and possibly unknown to the author), neither do Christians. On this point, at least, Einstein and Christians agree.

What's your definition of "Christian"?

In fact, MILLIONS upon millions of Christians believe exactly that, some of them are even congressmen.

If superstitious people were even a tiny fraction as smart as Einstein, that would likely do the trick too.

Einstein was as religious as the republican congress is patriotic.

Einstien was Spinozist-a One substance Monist-God OR Nature. He said so. Spinoza also was the first serious modern Biblical critic-his GOd was PHilosophical. He also thought that everyhting was determind by casues-no contingency-things MUST be the way the are. Hence God does not play dice

If it was the 1930's-50's, you'd be out of your mind to claim you were an atheist, we're talking the McCarthy area here.

We don't even claim it out loud in our neck of the woods now. We live and work among a large Catholic and Nazarene population. It would be folly to announce our atheism unless we are about to hightail it out of town.

You are having a left field fantasy-Einstein was not dissembling becasue of McArthyism-he explicitly said he did not believe in the God of the Bible-so he could have been accused of "Atheism" and Spinoza fits perfectly with his ideas about the universe and his physics-he was a Spinozist-try some common sense-if he were trying to hise something he could have simply said he believed-why don't you find the discussion and see who he was talking to also?

There is a big difference between religious and spiritual.

Religious is following the rules and customs of a religious organisation. This is quite often the realm of hypocrites who go to church on Sunday and treat others like garbage the rest of the week.

Spiritual is having beliefs and faith based on introspection and trying to live up to them.

Einstein was spiritual in that he thought there may have been a God of some sort but was anti-religion.

Seeing as spirituality is deeply personal I would know for myself. You have to look for your self.

Einsteins quotes : " I do not believe in a god of theology " Reasonable enough . Quote (2) " Science without religion is lame , religion without science is blind " . Quote (3) The DEEP CONVICTION of the presence of a SUPERIOR REASONING power , which is revealed in the incomprehensible universe , forms my idea of god . Implying by design ? Look at ALL of his quotes on religion , and one gets the impression he believed in some sort of universal intelligence , or a universe by design .That perhaps all that exist is a propensity towards self order .

It's been expressed already, but I too am supremely irritated when people try to claim that Einstein was religious.

I can't stand the people who try to put interpret Einstein as religious because he referenced god a couple times. This letter is extra ammunition to shoot these types of people down.

Einstein did use religious language extensively, mostly in a metaphorical sense, which has allowed religious people to quote mine him relentlessly to give the impression that he was one of them. Einstein was one of the smartest men ever to have lived, and he was a non-believer in every way that matters.
