There is no path back to society once incarcerated.....once a felon is released they face years on parole....parole is expensive (criminals have to pay for their own parole and drug tests) and former felons can't find work sufficient to pay their fees, transportation, food and a place to live.  Many are relegated to shelters full of drugs or the streets....most violate parole because they can't afford  Read More...

Well, the President doesn't speak for all Progressives; quite the contrary. However, Libertarians are hardly the solution, even though on some issues their stance coincides with Progressives.

We tried the laissez-faire (Johnson's) approach. It's what got us here in the first place. Remember?
05:55 PM on 10/15/2012
Please tell me when we have ever tried that economic approach. It's never happened.

We live in a corporatist society, not a capitalist one. There's a very big difference.

That fact that this current SC will not allow Prosecutors to be tried themselves or at least disbarred for Prosecutorial misconduct is proof the Justice System does not WANT to correct itself....and the SC does not either.

how do you rectify a dirty system when the people who make it that way are untouchable, by the very laws that have been compromised?

One more reason for term limits for the SCJ.....

Of course the USC is going to protect prosecutors, 7 of the 9 have served as a prosecutor of some stripe at some point in their lives (either a DA, US attorney, assistant AG, or solicitor gen). They're going to protect their own. And not one of them has ever worked as a defender.

Addressing the incarceration rate would mean having to address the FAILED DRUG WAR, and the private profits reaped from that war, as well as the corporate prisons with their slave labor. Manufacturing jobs are going to these prison slave camps (Unicor) that are paying MUCH lower wages than even the lowest wage earning countries. Too many politicians are financially involved in the prison industrial complex; laws are enacted to ensure they're at full capacity...many more are probably involved in those illegal drug profits, too. Sooo, don't look for ANY politician to say a damn thing about it, especially during an election cycle! Just follow the money...

Making Unique Observations in a Cluttered World

is anyone really surprised by this?
04:18 PM on 10/15/2012
The prison industrial complex is starting to rival the military industrial complex in being a threat to democracy. In addition to for-profit prisons, some places in this country are also making money off of prison labor. Our State Department is constantly complaining about prison labor in the rest of the world. This is just something else that authoritarian countries can point to as American hypocrisy.

State DOC's have done that forever. Its not entirely a bad idea either, prison labor helps them reintegrate into society.

Prisons are the replacement for outsourced manufacturing in America. They are the modern day plantation and they serve to ensure free labor and indentured servitude. This is one of the reasons that privatizing Prisons have become so popular.

There are 2 Juvenile Judges in Pa. right getting ready to go to jail because they had a monetary investment to convict children for non violent first offenses and give them the Maximum Sentences because the Judges had relatives who owned prisons and the Judges were funneling them MONEY because each child represented money....

The exact same consequence occurs with the privatizing of the Adult prisons too....

From commissary to use of phones, medicine, toiletries, and education....These are are big money makers for the people who own the prisons and Big money makers because the profit margins are so high......

Privatization/Outsourcing AND deregulation is just another Backwater/Halliburton train wreck waiting to happen.

Here’s Bush 43 on camera two days after Katrina saying to his newly appointed FEMA Director: “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job!
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines05/1230-01.htm

Here I have an excerpt from Salon re: Prisons:
“Privatization replaces the democratic role of citizens finding solutions to collective problems and transforms it into consumers trucking and bargaining in a marketplace. Finding solutions in a public space emphasizes accountability, voice, transparency, rules and claims through reasoning that goes beyond the self.”

The reason Romney doesn't want to talk about criminal justice is because of his Bain record. That would be a dangerous place for him to go, since one of his companies was charged with Medicare fraud, however he sold the company on the same month and year they served papers.

Maybe because he's an admitted former marijuana and cocaine user who would gladly put people behind bars for doing the very things he did as a young man, or the fact that his vice-president (Smirkin Joe) never met a draconian drug law he didn't like. The GOP isn't any better, though. Paul Ryan claims to love Ayn Rand, but I doubt she'd have anything good to ay about the drug war (which Ryan supports). And it's impossible to know where Romney stands on anything.

like i said here before people with records are second class citizens in this country! america needs to look in the mirror before she starts telling the rest of the world what to do ! there's plenty unjust things going on here!

I have less than two years to go before I can escape the American nightmare and go lie on a foreign beach and stop worrying about the future of my country of birth. I come from a long line of Marines and served myself. I used to say the pledge of allegiance and sing the national anthem everyday in grade school. Even now that I have grown to despise my government I still love my country. I just can't live in it one second longer than necessary.

It's not just the unjust wars, the class warfare, and the privatization of everything from the criminal justice system to the military; it’s the selling of the political system to private and corporate capitol. This country is on a downward spiral that will inevitably result in violence and bloodshed in the streets or a World War that will decimate civilization. Either way I plan to be far, far away.

Good luck. I'm helping my kids with implementing a system around the five flags theory. We're almost there.

At almost 60 I don't worry enough to put in the effort. If the SHTF, I'll be on my farm and live with whatever life throws at me.
