The word "pet" is a very old word.  The original meaning of "pet" was an orphaned lamb, raised by hand.

It's a questionable thing to do if you plan to put the pet back into a flock.

While hiking we came upon an unloading station for sheep about to be slaughtered at a nearby factory slaughter-house. There were at least 1,500 identical (to me) sheep (of course we know now sheep have amazing powers of identification. Scientists stopped counting when they realized an individual sheep could recognize as many as twenty human faces according to "National Geographic").

Anyway.  As we stood there looking at all these tightly packed, about to be departed sheep, from the far side of the pen, one sheep popped her head up and began to call plaintively.  She hitched herself up and sort of swam through the other sheep to come to our side where she stood trembling.  She was happy and confident that now a kind female face was there, all would be well.  I was twelve.  I walked away.  I have been haunted by sheep and that flesh has never crossed my lips.

Yes, not shepards but Australian cattle dogs that nip at heels ... I love them, too!

This is a great story, and for once is not about cute cats. Kudos for the man!

Don't worry everyone- the Gaza strip is under siege and fighting in the middle east is growing more intense, but the HuffPost is instead running stories about Chris Jenner's possible divorce and an orphaned lamb on the front page.

And the story about the Gaza strip is not the top story on the front page? Oh wait...it is.

You might want to look "instead" up in the dictionary before you use it again.

Those are Australian cattle dogs, not shepherd dogs, although they are often used for herding sheep as well as cattle.

Agreed! First thing I thought: The breed is not Aussie shepherd, it's Australian cattle dog.

Amazing photos, though. Big smiles here.

It's Australian stuff. Everyone gets that wrong - should have seen all the republicans bursting on twitter that they wee moving here if Obama got in! Guess they don't know about single payer, mandatory voting, govt education, unions, and our unmarried Atheist PM!

Aussie cattle dogs are good eggs!

Yup, we have two (mostly) ACD rescues. Great dogs, full of personality. I had to laugh at the photo where the one seems to be licking its chops though.
