The far right would love to close public education, and set us up with Church-Temple-Mosque schools only, such as they had in Lebanon before thirty years of civil war.

Listen, I have a higher degree also and I am from NC.  We have some less than informed citizens as well , I am not offended when people make a comment about NC......its not personal!

C'mon - who cares? We all know there are only about 6 people in Kentucky that know how to read, and of them only 2 make a regular habit of it.

If Kentucky wants to secede, I say we let them go.

They'll expect foreign aid and there will be far more deserving countries.

There is supposed to be a petition in existence online to do that, along with forty nine other state secession petitions. Someone really needs to see the Lincoln movie.

A petition and a dollar won't hardly buy a cup of coffee. Good luck with that.

Yes, turn off Fox News and see the movie.

Republicans are actually trying to wreck governments wherever they can. Amazing. Germany in the 1930s.

I am coming to the end of the rope in my tolerance for these junior grade nihilists. What I'd like to know, to understand is why a library of all the things government does is the target of their ire? Through out our history our founding fathers, great statesmen men and Presidents, our captains of industry and commerce, doctors, lawyers and the professional classes have recognized and supported the concept of the library. These Tea Party "patriots" know little of that.

Thank you so very much. I am gratified to read your post; it gives me hope for humanity, especially in that there are still sane, thinking people out there.

So the real question is who put these Tpublicans up to this? No doubt they didn't come up with this on their own. Somebody in that county has a vested interest in keeping the county residents and especially their children from having access to the books and materials contained within.

I don't for a minute believe this is about a miniscule tax hike. I smell a religious connection here.

Hillbillies are American, too!
Ignorance is widespread because it is free. Paying $1 more in library tax is like taking away the guarantee of free stuff. Dump the books in the harbor! Don't tread on my ignorance! Tea Bags forever!

Lets weigh the issue......... a ONE DOLLAR PER YEAR tax v. no library.

Are you TBaggers serious about this?????

Yes. They are serious. They are serious about wrecking government wherever they can.

As the Tea Party fades in influence they will show up as bullies on things like local library boards. What's next in Kentucky, Tea Party sponsored book burnings?

Insane. Throw the baby out with the bath water. What a plan. Whose bright idea is that? Sanders'? Fix the so-called problem if you want but do it in a responsible fashion. Tea Partiests and their ilk never consider the consequences of their actions.

Thanks to all the folks who commented with disparaging remarks about the petition organizers with only a glancing blow of ridicule to the rest of us Pulaski Countians! Local gossip indicates that the petition organizers have managed to gather around 2000 signatures, maybe 2500, and many of those were attained by misrepresenting the true nature of the petition. This represents around one in twenty of our 44,000 registered voters.
Our library took a quantum leap forward several years ago, raising taxes to build a new main library and new or renovated branches. This was also by petition, gathering far in excess of the requirement of Kentucky law for 51% of the number of residents who voted in the most recent general election.
We don't hold it against you coastal readers accountable to the actions of your Tea Party "founders", so thanks for not painting all of us out here in flyover country with the same broad brush.
