Hey Disney, tell us about how you maintain your monorail. Do you have a good relationship with the company that you bought it from, so you have good availability for spare parts and maintenance upgrades?

Oh, no. The company that made your monorail went out of business many years ago. So where do you get your spare parts from?

This is where Disney World gets their spare parts and maintenance:

U.S.A. Eastern Office:
Bombardier Inc. / Transportation Systems Division
5850 T.G. Lee Boulevard, Suite 520
Orlando, FL 32822 USA

Monorail Type: Straddle-beam, Rubber wheel on concrete & steel beam.
Monorail Class: Medium to High Capacity & Peoplemover.

Lack of safety measures or failure of the same should be given equal consideration while speculating about this tragic crash, don't you think?

It is mentioned, in the first paragraph, 2nd sentence: "Disney said it was the first fatal crash in the monorail's 38-year history in the park."

I know of two more that were not fatal. One (Collision) involved taking a train "Offline". The other was a fire. Both were covered up.

He must have been texting or talking on his cell phone. Why does Disney allow its employees to do so? You've got me.

Or there could have been a mechanical or electronic failure or malfunction. Why would you automatically blame the dead guy?

I sure hope these aren't the same monorail cars that were also found at the Washington Metro!?!
My condolences to the Wuennenberg Family during their time of grief.

I do feel sorry for the 21 year old who lost his job, and disney is a fun place to go with the kids. Im sure that was one of the fun jobs to have at the magic kingdom if your not into public displays and acting. Just think, 21 and driving a train. How great that must have been for him. Its a sad loss for him and his family. The bad part is I doubt the Mouse will do much beyond say how sorry they are. for Legal reasons of course.

When anyone tells you that a private company can run a transit line better than a public one, remember this.
04:14 PM on 07/05/2009
I disagree entirely. Disney World's rides and attractions are all incredibly safe. This is an unfortunate accident that is very out of character for the company. Of all the millions of miles "traveled" on Disney attractions per year, this is the first accident I have heard of since the late 1990s. And I do pay attention to this sort of thing.
06:20 PM on 07/05/2009
The Disney monorail is a toy compared to real transit systems. When you compare passenger miles travelled per accident, even one accident on the Disney system puts them over the top.

Anaheim Disney: "Thunder mountain": parts failure due to greatly reduced inspection/maintenance schedule.

Yeah, because Amtrak has never had a fatal crash. Sound Transit has never had an accident. There's never every been trouble on BART. NYC Subways are the safest.

Wait, you're talking out your hat...and you know thats not the word I was going to use.

Sad that a 21 year old kid, who loved his job, was killed.
04:15 PM on 07/05/2009
I know and I agree! I am so grateful that there was nobody else in the cockpit at the time (people can ask to sit up front with the driver and they are actually further "forward" than the driver him (or her)self).

Who's in charge here?
01:48 PM on 07/05/2009
My son works at Disney World in Orlando, in the evening and nights, in the Magic Kingdom. I haven't heard from him for a bit, so when I saw this story I fought panic. But it wasn't him, and I am so relieved but then I am so sorry for the family of the driver....So many young people work there and they do become like family united in one common purpose. So awful.....
01:47 PM on 07/05/2009
Gosh, that is just so sad. :(
