Unlike Christianity and Judaism, Islam has very clear prohibition on homosexual behavior, as is apparent from these quote from the Qur'an:

"We also (sent) Lot: he said to his people: "Do ye commit lewdness such as no people in creation (ever) committed before you? "For ye practice your lusts on men in preference to women: ye are indeed a people transgressing beyond bounds." "
[Holy Quran 7:80-81]

“Must you, of all people, [lustfully] approach men,
keeping yourselves aloof from all the [lawful] spouses whom your Sustainer has created for you? Nay, but you are people who transgress all bounds of what is right!”
[26:165-166]

As is obvious, Islam and homosexuality do not mix. Either you stay away from homosexual practices or declare yourself to be separate from Islam.

It does not matter what I think - I am just stating the obvious.
I always wonder, if the faith you follow rejects the lifestyle you choose, why still be an adherent to that faith and stick to the same lifestyle. One of the two always has to give!

"As is obvious, Islam and homosexuality do not mix."

Islam and child marriages mix (Muhammad's marriage to Aisha, Quran 65:4).

Islam and wife beating mix (Quran 4:34, Muslim 4:2127).

Islam and sexual slavery mix (Quran 4:3, 4:24, 23:5-6, 70:29-30).

Islam and polygamy mix (Quran 4:3, Muhammad's numerous marriages).

If those things "mix" with Islam, why can't homosexuality?

The things that are allowed, are allowed. The things that are banned are banned.
You can't change the faith, if you do not believe it is better to leave it and start one your own!

Secondly, as per some interpretations, concubines were allowed for a few year (under very strict conditions as you can read) but were later banned unconditionally since travel had eased up removing the condition for allow this.

Third, earlier religions had allowed any number of wives, Islam limited that to 4, under very strict conditions (Al Quran 4:3). Muhammad was not allowed to divorce his wives and his wives were not allowed to remarry (since he was not only a ruler but a prophet).
Moreover except his first wife (Khadija) all the rest of his wives were offered to him in marraige to cement treaties of alliances among tribes or powerful families of Arabia (including Aisha who was the daughter of his closest friend and ally and also a very rich and prominent man of Arabia).

" ..separate what was spiritual and true from the Qur'an and what, in his words, are part of the prejudices that are in every culture."

Once you, as a believer, conclude that not only certain interpretations of your Holy Books are the fallible work of men, but also their text itself, things can unravel pretty far. What is, and what is not born of social prejudice, the product of a particular time or a simple lack of knowledge about the natural world?

-just what is unfair to you,
-perhaps also what is unfair to women and children,
-even things that are contrary to objective fact?

Be careful, you might even end up an atheist ;)

I have to say that mixing gay and islam is radioactive. I don't know of a single islamic country that recognizes homosexuality.

The day sodomy becomes an accepted behaviour for a muslim is the day Islam stops being Islam and becomes something else. There is absolutely no doubt that it's a grave sin. It's not possible to be sodomite and muslim. Perhaps these people should join a liberal church and make it official that they have left Islam.

Islam has a long way to go before it accepts a lot of things including LGBT issues. I'm not sure if its the religion itself or people who dictate what is acceptable and what is not.

As in Christianity, though -- some people (Muslims in this case) say that's so, others say it isn't so, and still others are gay.

The religion dictates behavior; the learned people--the scholars--interpret it when the people are unclear on how they should conform in order to obey God.

He was right in the very first part of the interview. "Either the Quran is bad or I am the problem." Correct! The Quran is bad! Hooray!

It just sounds like after years of trying to reconcile the cognitive dissonance he's finally figured out how to do it. Congratulations... I guess?

Ah, so what you're saying is that Islam in an innately bigoted religion? Islam cannot exist without its bigoted beliefs, and Islam without bigotry is no Islam at all.

Even if I buy into the theory that being gay is not a choice, but rather something we are born with, how can you expect me to think the same way about bi-sexuals? Yet they are grouped right in there with all the other LGBTs. And please don't bother telling me how ignorant or intolerant I am. I know some gays and lesbians, and they can be some of the most angry, intolerant people you will ever meet.
03:44 PM on 12/08/2012
Huh? Are you saying that bisexuality is not a choice? Why would you assume that?

It honestly sounds to me like you are bisexual and you are projecting. I don't understand your comment otherwise.

I think the point is that it is one thing to tell a Kinsey-6 that they should only be with someone of the opposite sex (presumably giving them the choice of celibacy or some kind of sexless sham of a marriage). It is very different to say a bisexual should only be with someone of the opposite sex (since they are presumably able to have a satisfying relationship with the opposite sex).

Can you think of a reason they might be angry just with you?
12:27 PM on 12/21/2012
I didn't say they were angry at me. They are just angry in general. And no, I am neither gay nor bisexual. I feel that I am tolerant. I do not argue that it is their choice to be as they want to be. My point is just that I do not buy into the idea that bisexuality is something you could be born with, and therefore doesn't fall into the same arguments many make about the gay lifestyle not being a choice.

I hate it when people ask me, "When did you first realize you were gay?". That's the stupidest question I ever heard. You don't realize you're gay. You just are. If I were him, I would have asked the interviewer, "when did you first realize you were straight?"

There are about fifty different Islamic nations, some are as homophobic as the US, and some as liberal as the Netherlands. 1.6 billion members of Islam, you can no more group them all together than the Christian nations.

"jistinnkees" is right. Let's be honest, all religion leaders have a problem with homosexuality but we can't say ALL Muslims are anti-gay like we can't say all Christians are anti-gay. Turkey, for instance, is a modern, secular country where most people are Muslims. While gays still don't have the legal right to get married (as they should), openly gay Turkish celebrities still have millions of fans, there are gay nightclubs and bars in Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Antalya, Eskisehir, and there's annual gay pride in Istanbul. (I lived there for two years so I'm sure.)
