The lame Liga is not the Bundesliga.

Impossible to compare the strength of the bundesliga in that period with la liga now. That being said, Spain isn't the ruling world/european champion without a reason

Greatest of all time. Football was never at this level 30 or 40 years ago. To do what he has done at the level and age he has accomplished it, just mind boggling. I watch him play every weekend wether its with Barcelona or Argentina, you know you are watching the greatest.

>>> Zatara - lucky you! I live too far away to have the privilege of watching this genius. He is beyond words! The best of the best. I have watched him on TV leaping high in the air to nod the ball over the goalie's head and into the back of the net. He makes it look so easy. What I love about the football he plays and that they all play at Barca is the passing of the ball, no player holds onto it, it goes back and forward, it is magical. In one game recently Barca had no designated striker, it was every man to seize the opportunity if it arose. That is football at its best, teamwork at its very best. And the great thing about Lionel Messi is that he is, according to reports, a truly nice man, not arrogant, humble even. May he continue to work his magic on the field to the delight of all who have the good luck to watch him - you included. Happy Christmas and New Year... I'm a dedicated fan.

Um sorry, check your history. Pele won the World Club Championship in 1962 with Santos, at the time the BEST club on the planet. Pele was the best ever. Messi is truly exceptional, really the best playing right now. But he is maybe third all-time. You obviously were not alive with Pele was playing you don't remember the impact of his playing, how he was so far beyond most of his opponents. Messi, admittedly playing in a more physical game now, does not run circles around his opponents the way Pele did. Messi is great! Don't get me wrong. But Pele was something more like Michael Jordan, just in another class by himself. And a few Brazilians like Garrincha followed. They were so far ahead of any other player at the time. Messi is just slightly better and Cristiano Ronaldo or the next best, not light years ahead like Pele was.

Not empty, just devoid of content.

It's probably not a really meaningful comparison. Today's game is significantly different than in Pele's time. Additionally, the systems that players are coming up through now days make it much more difficult to really differentiate yourself as clearly as Pele did.
Suffice it to say, they are both great and the best of their times.

I hope his brilliant streak channels to the Argentinian national team as well, now that they are still working to qualify for the 2014 World Cup. It would be a shame not to have them in Brasil.

The greatest athlete in any sport at the moment. Kind of like Michael Jordan at his best, but better, actually. Since Michael jordan never went up and bested the basketball version of Christiano Ronaldo. MJ never had a Ronaldo breathing down his neck, or any of the tons of impossibly good footballers in Spain and Europe at the moment. I feel lucky watching this guy, the thought that it is conceivable that I can actually see someone like Messi play with my own eyes is incredible.

What an amazing recovery from his knee "injury" 4 days ago. Soccer players recovery powers are incredible! Or maybe it is their incredible ability to fake an injury. Yawn.

You don't need an incredible ability to fake an injury. Any player in any sport can manage doing it.
