It will never be enough no matter what you do for some of these "animal enthusiast". You are only allowed to breed meat for them.

How many people who bring home dogs from a humane society have had the dog respond to something in the new environment in an unexpected manner (because of its upbringing and/or breeding) which then resulted in say 50 to 100 facial stitches in a small child? And if so, how many of these would recommend the adoption of dogs from humane shelters?
03:15 AM on 12/26/2012
Not very many. You should check for statistics yourself, instead of just spewing out the open-ended question, leaving the impression that it happens all the time. Humane societies have strict guidelines about the temperament and behavior of pets that are made available for adoption. They also have health guidelines for the animals, and rules and requirements of potential adopters.

I have adopted 8 over the many years and I've never had one problem with the dogs and the kids. Not one. Is it perfect. Nope, but stuff happens. It could also happen with a store bought dog.

Why not just refuse to buy Australian Shepherds and Australian Heelers--both of these AKC breeds are utterly worthless--but I'd bet this pet store promotes pitbull ownership for all.

Australian Shepherds worthless? What is your criterion for determining the worth of a breed? I suppose Yorkies and Chihuahuas are better?

We should have a national law that prohibits the sale of pets at pet stores. We have an over abundance of pets waiting for adoption at animal shelters across the U.S. If they are not adopted they more than likely stand a 90% chance of being euthanized. Please think twice before buying a pet at a store or a breeder. Those lovely animals who were left behind are waiting for you at a local animal shelter in your community.

Nice job! If the person is a responsible pet owner they will wait!

I sincerely what to thank this pet store owner. They have sacrificed their own reputation as well as income to support the fact that there are millions of animals that were tossed aside or neglected. If only other owners would do the same, the amount of animals in our shelters would go down considerably.

If she really wanted to do a service for her community and the animals she would stop selling pets all together. Animal shelters are over crowded with beautiful animals wiating for a good home.

So instead of finding responsible pet owners…she would get out the the business and find no owners??

yup….you spot on, buddy

Let me thank this Pet store owner, for not only having the foresight to know that every Christmas people run out to purchase puppies only to grow weary before the housebreaking stage is over, but also to promote adoption. Some of the best dogs you will ever need can be found in your local shelters. I believe purchasing a animal should be more difficult. I have resuced three dogs in the last year alone. Enough before you run out to purchase the cute puppy please do your homework, then maybe volunteer to become a foster parent at any shelter or ASPCA, then you will know if you want or need a dog, or cat.

Lovely sentiments and lovely post Elizabeth. Seems like humanity is prevailing. After all, dog or human---we feel hurt, pain, and rejection the same.

I've found, over the decades, that buy vs. adopt from shelter is one of those debates where people almost never change their minds about, and even the discussion goes nowhere. It's like global warming. You can point out insurmountable that it is occurring and we're mostlikely doomed already, but your opponent will say, "Do you walk or bicylcle to work? Aha! You don't! Then everything you say is a lie." You can point out the deplorable situation that breeding for profit causes, the overcrowded shelters, the genetic problems, the millions of dead animals, but the discussion quickly becomes about you: you're a hypocrite, go hug a tree. But I don't have any answers... I never said I did.

Thats a very good way of putting it, and you may run into some real nuts. I think global warming has overwhelming amount of evidence and facts, but the other side merely ignores facts or believes that nothing needs to be done (because nature and tech will solve all).

In either case, I say, if you believe global warming is real: do what you can in your own life.
There is no perfect or right answer, and if you believe it is global warming is real, then do what you can.

I recycle at every chance I get.
My coworkers and I set up a recycle bin at the office and we take turns taking all the soda cans and paper cups to recycle.
I pay a little extra for wind energy in my electric bill.
I try to consume less meat and more vegetables.
I use 15 watt light bulbs.
I encourage my friend to educate themselves.

I try to frame it like this: regardless of whether you believe in global warming, it would benefit us all to pollute less and have less waste. If our oceans have cleaner water, our sea life is safer and more populated. If we have cleaner air, our asthma and lung diseases and health will be better. If we consumer less oil, the costs and pollution will go down.

These are all good things that will benefit everyone.

Seriously? You had to turn a story about puppies into a rant on global warming?

The "buy" [from a AKC breeder] versus "adopt" [a unknown background and unknown breeding] from a "humane society" is easily resolved when the animal in put next to the face of one's own small children.
