The folks in Atlanta were privileged to have Eugene Patterson, Ralph McGill and Bill Nelson at the Atlanta Journal Constitution during those perilous times of change in the south --- and Furman Bisher, the Dean of Sports Writers, to take our minds off of our troubles.

And, the political leadership in Atlanta was outstanding. Too bad we suffer through a dirth of political leadership today.

"Every one of us in the white South holds that small shoe in his hand. ... **We who go on electing politicians who heat the kettles of hate.** ... (The bomber) feels right now that he has been a hero. He is only guilty of murder. He thinks he has pleased us. We of the white South who know better are the ones who must take a harsher judgment."
**
Worth repeating.....as many times as it takes.

How far journalism has traveled from the high standard that Mr. Patterson had set. RIP.

I was fortunate enough to work for the St. Petersburg Times when Gene Patterson was at the helm. He was principled, tough, generous, genial to all, never condescending to even the lowliest Times staffer and uncompromisingly honest.
He had a booming laugh and a true southern drawl. He was one of a kind. I miss those days. RIP Gene: you made a real difference for many and what better can be said of someone?

As the segregation today is money. Rich against the poor. And the malice and contempt for the poor is just as sickening. RIP Mr. Patterson. Let us reread your words and heed them.

RIP, Mr. Patterson. Thank you for your great contribution to human decency. Our society takes a hit every time another of the actual journalist/writer/reporters dies off.
