Actually, I think that "1 in 4" ratio is pretty conservative. I moonlighted as a college security guard back when our second child was born and some bills piled up. What I discovered was that the "security" guards at that college were just for show, and worse yet we were given the understanding that we never wanted the real police to get involved in campus affairs because then any assault would be set in stone. Talking with some of my peers at another college indicated that they were experiencing the same thing. So, while my knowledge is admittedly anecdotal, I would be willing to wager that what I saw was not limited to just my geographical area.

As for being ready in the event of an actual shooting spree? No, we were nowhere close to being prepared. We had no weapons beyond simple impact tools (batons and flashlights), no access to Kevlar vests, etc. Not even an evacuation plan.

I propose making classrooms sealable from the inside, much like airline cockpits. Some don't think much of that idea but I still think it is a good one. Yeah, it would cost some money to retrofit every classroom in America, but we've spent more on less worthy causes.

Another proposal: have law-enforcement "mini stations" within five minutes or less from every school.

Lastly, I do support those teachers who wish to arm themselves to be allowed to do so. If a teacher would rather not, I respect that, too.

Guns should be banned at all campuses, students who violate this run expelled and metal detectors installed where appropriate. All gun related activities like ROTC that use firearms should be held off campus as well as any sports events where guns are involved. If the school isn't prepared for such an eventuality it should not take chances with the lives of their students. A no exception policy is the best that can be done at this time.

If they are not prepared, then we should get them prepared. The NRA holds many valuable classes and they are affordable. These guys should also be armed to the teeth.

The NRA thinks that gunfights are still conducted in the manner prior to April 19, 1775, because nobody in the NRA has ever been in a live-fire gunfight before.

I agree with you. Gun owners are terrified to be without their guns. You can see it in their comments were they say someone will come after them and kill them if they don't have one. They totally can't see the fact that they are more likely going to be killed because they have one than not. Guns empower strange force of superiority and invincibility in the gun owner that defies reason and empirical data to the contrary..

If the NRA truly wants to help, the classes should be free.

What do you think campus security is, Delta Force, Navy Seals? There main job is to check that doors are locked and the parties at Eye Felta Thigh aren't too rowdy. Anything serious happens they should 'sound the alarm', call the police, monitor the situation and try not to kill themselves or any students...

Exactly. They aren't prison guards.

This appalling lack of readiness only gets worse when you consider the daycare workers, barristas and dental hygienists who are equally unprepared. Do you realize that some of these unpatriotic loafers may have never held a gun in their entire life? Not once in their entire lives? Are you outraged yet? Thank God for the NRA, diligent in its duty to remind us that it is every American's responsibility to be armed and at the ready, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from cradle to grave. Read your Constitution! Then do what Samuel Alito did. Dream.

And why should College campuses have that ability. Its a place of higher education...The Naval Academy, West Point , Police Stations or Military Bases probably could not handle these types of attack.

Currently, one-in-four campus police departments are not unprepared to handle an active shooter,

?
08:46 AM on 01/21/2013
I bet you could say the same thing about communities who populations are less than 25,000 residents. No matter how much you train, if it doesn't happen except for once every 20 years, no one is prepared for the situation. You only hope your training kicks in and you handle it in a professional manner as most University Police Departments are today.

"University Police Departments"

The very thought creeps me out....
More people with Guns that either couldn't make the Force or had to "retire early"...
From what I've seen in news reports, as bad as the BART cops.
We had a light contingent of security guards back in my Day and that was mostly to protect the grounds from the Students....didn't stop us from some fun either. Now we see Students acting in such inappropriate ways, outsiders rummaging around and even a TV show about Campus Cops. What the heck happened ?
09:59 AM on 01/21/2013
Many departments are accredited and the police officers go through the same academy as community police departments. Many local officers are recruited from University Police departments because of the pay difference. Competition is very heavy. It's has nothing to do with "make the force". It has to do with 500 applicants for 1 or 2 positions.

It is a lot harder for a police force to mobilize a response and react to a call of an active shooter. All that it takes for a armed civilian that is on the scene and has eyes on the shooter is to draw, take in their targets surroundings and back drop, locate their front sight and squeeze off a round.

Rote training is the key, doing something over and over again till it becomes instinctual. Unfortunately, this is also a very boring method of training, and unless there has been a recent danger most people are going to slack up on it.

You're absolutely right: you never are truly, truly prepared till something happens and you respond. You hope your training kicks in, but I've seen braver men than me freeze, smarter men than me become irrational.

You just do your best, and sometimes that is good enough and sometimes not. I know I never want to see another dead body. There is nothing glorious about death.
