As someone who knows all of Taylor's music, I can say that you are quite incorrect.
03:20 PM on 01/21/2013
Correction, most of her singles are about her dates. If you bothered researching her other songs that were never singles, you'd see that she has songs about other things :)

Thank you. FINALLY a good post about Taylor that makes sense and a GOOD point.

Actually, NONE of the things she mentions are why I have a problem with Taylor. My issue is ruthlessly using her Petri dish relationships for song material in a mechanized machine of girl appeal "creativity" devised to create a persona that will sell to her tween demographic.
03:17 AM on 01/21/2013
Let's turn this sentiment around for a minute and see what you think. If we substitute the name of a male music teen idol for Taylor Swift's name, it helps to bring out the inherent sexism behind the criticism targeting her.

I have a problem with Justin (Bieber) because for "ruthlessly using his (sic) Petri dish relationships for song material in a mechanized machine of girl appeal "creativity" devised to create a persona that will sell to his (sic) tween demographic."

actually, i feel that taylor has more talent than Justin.  for all of her machinery, i do feel that she at least is heartfelt in some way while he is pretty much a hack.

Well said Elizabeth. I know for one, and I'm a 53 year old woman, don't get this inane hatred people have of Taylor Swift. Must be envy, or even jealousy ? Guess people need someone to target and abuse. You're right, Taylor has this. She's had it for how many years running now ? And what's so wrong with antiquing ? With the places she can go to look, makes me a little envious, but I've found my own little places to go.

i really don't get all the animosity self-identified "feminists" have shown Taylor Swift. Especially while ignoring other female celebs doing the exact same things they criticize her for.
11:54 PM on 01/20/2013
what other female celebs, aside from reality stars and Jennifer Aniston, use their dating life as their sole claim to fame and then get offended when the interview (that is pre-f'in'authorized) happens to be about that?

You understand she got famous for music and then like every other famous musician the tabloids became obsessed with her romantic life and she has used romantic life to write successful songs. Musicians have been doing that for decades. Carly Simon was writing songs about bad breakups back in the '70s.

I am a 66 yr. old Grandma who is a feminist...I guess one could say self-identified as I marched for women's rights....

I think Taylor is empowering to her fans as an example of a woman who has her power and keeps it for herself; displays a good role model of a fearless, independent young woman who sets goals, speaks her mind, and works hard.

Her lyrics are age appropriate. As with all of us, male and female alike, she will grow and we can look forward to years of her music.

Yeah. She knows a huge part of her fan base is girls younger than she is and writes lyrics which are appropriate for 10 or 12 year old's. That she isn't writing dark, "adult" lyrics like say Lady Gaga doesn't matter because the Gaga type lyrics aren't appropriate for a lot of her fans.
And yeah her personal life is something feminists should be holding up as a model of empowerment but many seem unable to get beyond her music or don't want "empowerment" which isn't screaming in your face and going to rehab.

Pretty much, yeah.

And as with anything, the people who harbor negative feelings will always be the loudest, and will always be far more likely to comment. That's just the way it is.

Taylor's fans speak their positive feelings toward her through massive record sales and sold out tours.
03:32 PM on 01/20/2013
Thank you. I don't see any reason why Taylor is being picked on the way she is. As a fan, I was hoping she would get more publicity in Europe, but this is totally not the way I wanted it.
I think she's a great rolemodel. She may have a lot of boyfriends, but at least she isn't beaten like Rihanna.
Furthermore, I don't see any reason why she isn't a good singer just because she her songs aren't about feminism. How many modernday popstars could anyone name that sing about feminism? I'm sure there aren't a lot.
I think she's a sweet girl and I like her music, but if anyone doesn't, that's okay. Just don't take it out on the girl herself, that's just mean.

Well said and honestly she doesn't have that many boyfriends. When you think of how the tabloids consider any guy she goes on one date with or has a platonic friend is a "boyfriend" she isn't any different than most people my age. It only seems weird because other celebs are so different relationships wise from normal people and do bizarre things like marry people they just met.

I couldn't care less what her interests are or her personal life is like. I take issue with Taylor Swift because her music is cookie-cutter, formulaic pop and yet people praise her like she's reinventing the wheel somehow. 90% of her songs deal with the same narration and source material which is tiresome. She can't write about dating/breaking up with boys forever, so if she's not growing musically then I'm not interested. Besides, the fact that her music sounds like it could soundtrack a High School Musical film isn't innovative, it's playing to the lowest common denominator.

I don't like her much, but I don't think anyone thinks she is a genius who is transforming the face of popular music, either. Unless you can point to someone other than a 15 year old who thinks she is the next Bob Dylan, that seems like a bit of a strawman, to me.
02:13 PM on 01/20/2013
YAWN. The reason why people hate her is because she's always trying to humiliate her ex boyfriends with her songs. Not because she's asexual or because she dates a lot of men.
11:55 PM on 01/20/2013
seriously, ive never even heard these asexual claims. She's obviously not.
03:27 PM on 01/21/2013
Have you really listened to her songs??? She's not trying to humiliate anyone. She's expressing her emotions and how she felt about her relationships. That's ALL. Her exes are perfectly welcome to release songs about their side of the story. No one's stopping them. If they choose not to, that's on them.
02:06 PM on 01/20/2013
Blows me away having people comment on the superficial paparazzi pap who don't know squat about Taylor's life or accomplishments. She is a true artist who was the youngest songwriter under contract in Nashville history at fourteen, and if one listens to her 'other' songs, the non-pop hits, you will hear the most articulate and intelligent young woman to hit stardom perhaps ever. She's written 100% of her songs since that age, and has never had a 'manager.' Big Machine (who she signed with after breaking her first contract at fifteen as their very first artist) let her have defacto control until she reached the legal age of eighteen, and she's been the CEO and creative control of all she surveys ever since. How many young women have done that, and why are so many smarmy characters trying to tear her down since? Hey...she has some boyfriends. So what? If they were girlfriends your politically correct knee-jerk critics wouldn't say word one, you hypocrites.
11:55 PM on 01/20/2013
The public knows what she has told them in her songs and then verified in interviews
03:08 AM on 01/21/2013
I only know OF her through the media and couldn't name or, for that matter, identify any of her work. But she sounds like a talented and successful young woman to me. Whether or not one appreciates the music she makes (to each their own), she's achieved a heck of a lot more in her relatively few years on this earth than can be said for the majority of us. Thank you for giving credit where credit is due.

She has avoided the Young Celebrity Disaster Marriage so far, seems to me she's way ahead of the curve compared to a lot of her peers.

The rest of it .... sort of a big helping of none o' my business.

This is a great article
I never once thought there is an artist who dates in order to write a song. Lets face it, she dates a variety of people, and desires a perfect relationship. I defend the writing of music. She explained it very well, she learns a lesson and is able to express it in a song.
Also, part of being a woman is always caring and nurturing the work in progress. And I write this while listening to her excellent lyrics
" you'll be mine and Ill be yours"

"She explained it very well, she learns a lesson and is able to express it in a song."

She claims to have learned a lesson but her actions belie her words.

You don't like her work, fine. But you don't know her, and as far as I know, you haven't established any credentials to be able to judge her for the way she lives her life. It doesn't affect you. Why is it so important to you what she does?
12:17 PM on 01/20/2013
I think she writes from an honest place. If her way of getting over relationships is writing about them then that's great. It's better than drowning your sorrows away in alcohol or drugs. I don't think she dates people for album material. She has said many times that when she falls in love she is stupid about it. I also don't agree with people saying she only bashes her exes. She has had two or so songs where she portrays them in a negative light but most of her songs are about her falling and they are sweet. She has a good amount of songs that aren't about boys. She has never publicly said who her songs are about except that time on Ellen in 2008. If the media weren't so focused on her personal life, then people would just live her alone. I also think the media has a hand in how she is perceived. She is such a sweet, honest, caring person and it's disgusting to see all this hate she is getting.
07:16 PM on 01/20/2013
"She has said many times that when she falls in love she is stupid about it."

Therein lies the problem. She recognizes that she is stupid over and over again and yet does nothing about it. I don't see why stupidity should be held up as a positive role model.
03:35 PM on 01/21/2013
Or maybe she tries to do something about it?
And have you never had a crush? I can say from personal experience that that can lead one to do many stupid things. And no matter how much you say you'll never act stupid again....the next crush begins and there goes that...
