Click the link (for the Upworthy map) and notice the two States at the top left. Zero wait time. Oregon has had mail-in-voting for years. There is not a shred of election fraud, voter intimidation, insufficient or malfunctioning equipment, long lines, or any other of the myriad problems you folks in the rest of the country put up with election after election after election. Plus it costs less and even improves voter turnout.

It's way past time to understand that there are way, way, way better approaches than what most of the country puts up with. And perhaps it's time for the rest of you to actually do something that totally prevents the republicans from engaging in their voter disenfranchisement efforts. Check it out and learn about how to make our democracy work better. Please.

If the lines are regularly getting longer, you add more precincts or voting machines.

Seems logical to me.

Assuming your goal is to actually encourage voting.

True.  Why would anyone want to encourage such an American institution like voting

People have to realize that the Republican officials will continue their attacks on voters and the Court is likely to whittle away at the VRA until one of the extreme right wing judges retires. Our only chance of stopping this constant assault is to vote out the Republicans. Do not even vote for one as dog catcher.

Now THAT is a fascinating graphic, but leaves me wanting to know more. Is the bump in Dem/Ind times due to their living in more highly concentrated counties? A cross-reference of the data would be interesting to understand. Also, tighter detail (down to the county level) would be pretty cool to see, particularly in those states that had the high wait times. (I had effectively zero wait time myself, and that's correllated in the data presented in the graphic).

There is undoubtedly a correlation between population density and waiting times. This would also apply to the racial waiting times as well, so we shouldn't jump to conclusions yet. But when a state appears to have disproportionately long lines for its population, that's a systematic failure of leadership

Oh, I agree - I'm just interested in digging deeper into it. I'd prefer to have someone do it for me....  :)

Let us have election laws that is universally applicable to the rest of the country. That way, there is no confusion.

Would be nice, but have you seen the legislation that various States controlled by the GOP are trying to and are passing? We have a few States that give their electoral college delegates based on the percentage of votes each candidate got in that State. Several States have taken up that change. What it would mean if all States would have done that is that Mr. Romney would be President even though he lost by more than 4 million votes.

Go to to find out how to register and vote in your state. Be sure to pass the link along to any young people who will be turning 18 in the near future.
Also, if you don't LIKE how your state holds elections, contact your governor and representatives  write letters to local media, volunteer to be on an advisory group, join the League of Women Voters (men can join).
If I can file my income taxes on-line, I should be able to vote on-line.  At least, in my state we can register on-line and we can vote by mail.

I didn't have to wait but ten minutes to vote. Then again, I live in a Blue State, i'm white and, not impoverished. The Supreme Court is about to tell all of us that everybody is like me.

Due to the dislocation of my polling place by superstorm Sandy I had to wait over a minute to enter the voting booth.
