Marissa is just trying to run her business the best way she knows how, and give her investors a return, not trying to make a political statement or save the world.

Why do feminists imagine that women executives don't also have to report to Wall Street and give the investors the same return they expect from a man?

Part of Mayer's problem may well be that she does not have enough management experience. Really, at age 37, how could she? She may well be brilliant programmer (she taught that at Stanford) but programmers are notoriously in-adept at handling management issues, that comes with time and experience.

The problem is not that she is a woman, but she just lacks experience in managing a large diverse corporation. It is very rare that young people, men or women, who get thrust into a large corporate and run the thing successfully. Most of these newly created technocrats usually call in experienced managers to run the company. The number of successful young people who have taken their companies to greatness are few in number. But to take a relatively inexperienced person and throw them into managing a company, i.e., Yahoo, that is floundering and expect them to be successful is really asking a heck of lot.

My guess is Marissa Mayer is relying on her executive staff at the levels below to help form her policy on this. She won't have made this decision in a vacuum. It's true that if she's got a systems engineering background, she may not be as adept at people-skills as she could be, but she's also tasked with doing what's necessary to get productivity back to a higher level, even if it means making some enemies among the telecommuters. I have a feeling that her senior VPs in the groups that are being hit hardest with the come-back-to-the-office directive have said behind the scenes, "This arrangement isn't serving my organization terribly well anymore," and Mayer, in response, stepped up to be the heavy by announcing the new policy.

Yes, but it is her name on the memo and she is the executive and must then take responsibility for her action on this. Now, this is not to say that it is the wrong decision, she may well be right. It may well be that Yahoo has the wrong people on home telecommuting. There is no question that being together in the physical presence of your colleagues promotes a better and creative environment. The immediate presence of warm bodies, not their tele-presence, eases communication, you are able to read body language that is difficult via video. Some jobs lend themselves to telecommuting while others do not.

What I would suggest is that it appears that she acted in a more ham-handed way. Perhaps if she issued the memo and said that the telecommuting policy is going to be reviewed, it would have gone over a tad bit better. I think she could have operated a bit more diplomatically when making this call, and that many times comes from lack of experience in dealing with your fellow human beings.

She's CEO of Yahoo, she answers to the shareholders. She has every right to make these changes. If a man did this, no one would be talking about it. Some people may not like it, so they can leave. Working from home is a luxury, and the points she makes are valid. She worked her butt off to get where she is, and she's making much-needed changes at Yahoo. If you read any report, Yahoo has been run in a completely inefficient way. I'm no feminist, but I'm completely behind her on this.

if she were a man we would be talking about it as well,yahoo is a company whose CEO will be followed closely because of its current situation. this is not a gender issue, CEOs get criticized for their decisions all the time, by making this a gender issue, you doing her a disservice

Nobody.
Most likely, if those Yahoos fix their struggling company and everything there is fine again, they'll bring it back. Until then , they have to do something to fix that company.

The women that are supporting these women are in no way representative of the average working woman who has to juggle and balance work with family life. These women not only have to deal with the brutality of working in a male dominated work force; but arrogant women who not only don't have a clue as to what they are dealing with but they do not care because they have a team of servants at home to rear their children that they are too arrogant and busy to pay attention to. I have seen these kids when they grow up and they are no more prepared for life than the kids who grew up in impoverished homes.

Yahoo is a struggling company in desperate need of a turnaround both in terms of its product and its culture. On those points alone, it makes sense that Mayer would want employees working on site. The atmosphere at Yahoo is all hands on deck right now and if a CEO thinks he/she can improve performance by having paid employees on-site, that's within their prerogative. Remote work can be effective but collaboration happens best when people are in the same place sharing ideas and working side-by-side. This policy change applies equally to male and female employees so it's hard to see where discrimination is evident. It's also worth noting that Meyer checked VPN log-ins and discovered many off-site workers weren't actively logging in. In other words, they were basically goofing off and not fulfilling the terms of their off-site agreement. That gives her another reason to insist on relocation to the site which, by the way, isn't such a bad place to work. The Yahoo facility is far from a dump in an off-the-beaten path location.

So I see an executive director, a community director, a vice president and a chief strategy officer as the "women in tech" defending the these two bosses. Upper class defending upper calss.

How about looking for thoughts from the working class women in tech about these bosses' strategies?
