Isn't this an apple debating an orange?  Krugman is an economist.  His training is in economics.  Ferguson is NOT AN ECONOMIST!  He is an historian, who likes to study the history of economics in the past and use that in place of economic analysis.  Historians are trained to interpret the past.  Economists are trained to learn from past business cycles but compare and contrast  Read More...

Whether you like him or not when has been wrong about the current state of the world economy and what measures that have to be taken to correct it. Even Morning Joe agreed with most of what he said. In order to find disagreement with him Morning Joe had to misconstrue what he said. I listened to the debate....not what someone told me. If you do not believe Krugman is right about this being the wrong time for austerity....then explain why Europe lurches from one crisis to the next and the debt never seems to get paid down. why is Europe by in large in a double dip recession. Why is China prospering with the stimulus of government spending? Why is China trying to bolster its domestic economy with government spending and the rest of the world trying to bolster their consumer economies by taking money out of consumers pockets through austerity of government spending. Think there is no US example NJ unemployment is 10% now and was 8% when the austerity of Christie took over.

Niall Ferguson is a historian specializing in counterfactualism, the "What if? scenario. It requires speculation. Its entertaining stuff and he writes well on economic history but he's not an economist. He's on thin ice here.

Exactly, Ferguson is not an economist and everything he writes demonstrates that his understanding of the subject is very, very limited.

Krugman is just pointing out that Ferguson was wrong about the stimulus causing interest rates to rise, and now Ferguson is wrong AGAIN about Obamacare causing an economic calamity, so Krugman is pointing that out.  Krugman has always been civil. Ferguson just doesn't like what Krugman says, even though Krugman has always been right about the economy for years.

If we would've left Glass-Steagall alone and regulated derivatives we wouldn't be in this mess.

Nobel prizes lost their meaning when Obama was awarded one for campaign promises. Thanks.

That may be true of the Nobel Peace Prize, which was always highly political, and the one for Literature to a certain extent too, but not the ones for the serious sciences (physics, chemistry, medicine, economics).

Krugman is the Nobel Prize winning economist who is not afraid to tell us how insane our economy is, and how irrational we are about it.  I haven't seen him call a shot wrong about the economy yet.

Krugman's prize was for theory in global patterns of trade and location. It had nothing to do with his insane ideas that we can keep printing more money to spend on government programs and not cause irreparable damage to the long term standing of our nation. The Noble committee has become a parody of its own self, even giving the Peace Prize to a leader who uses drones to murder people by remote control.

Recent Krugman articles for the defenders:

Sequester of Fools

Rubio and the Zombies

The Ignorance Caucus

Friends of Fraud

Coins Against Crazies

Yes, very measured discourse, that.

Sounds like he's calling a Spade a Spade...the ensconced pundit class is rarely, if ever, challenged in the MSM.

I see Krugman's forceful views as a breath of fresh air, and a welcome alternative to the typical Beltway blather.

So when you agree with name-calling and insults, it's just "calling a spade a spade." Same thing when you disagree, right?

I agree with Paul Krugman. He has tried to keep the public discussion on the economic issues. He does get testy at times but this is understandable since he is often on the defensive regarding his strong stand on Keynesian which is currently out of favor among economists, politicians, and financial gurus.

Prof. Krugman has shown much more restraint with his critics than I would have done.

How "respectful" can you be to someone who insists that FDR caused the Great Depression?

How much "civility" can a person demonstrate toward a someone who insists that the Community Reinvestment Act, NOT the Wall Street banks, was responsible for the Wall Street meltdown?

Economist Krugman is NEVER afraid to call someone on their nonsense (and there are MANY nonsense-spewers out there). And while he does not do it gently, he addresses himself entirely to the SUBSTANCE, such as it is. Historian Ferguson has waded well over his chin into economics and has had to backtrack time after time, about interest rates, about inflation... and he, along with many others, has been spectacularly wrong about the effect of austerity in Europe. And still, he keeps coming back for more. Of course his ego is bruised.

There there, Niall.
