How naive and gullible people are to say the Portman was showing humanity and changing his rightwing Republican stances because of  "personal" factors, the news of his son's homosexuality, which ostensibly changed Portman from being revolted to being revolutionary — for a Republican. He's gone  mushy, we hear, wanting his son to have the same opportunities for married bliss as his other children  Read More...

Apparently Chelsea Clinton is gay, Hillary just reversed her stance on gay marriage.

Only something as irrational as homophobia and lack of love for their child could compel someone to condemn a near-Yale grad for being a deviant.
09:06 AM on 03/17/2013
What's really going on here, as with a lot of other parents of gay children, is that when they find out that their child is gay they start to have a reversal of belief on whether or not being gay is actually a choice.

"It allowed me to think of this issue from a new perspective".

...ain't that the thing with the GOP though? They don't live in the real World, to know what it's like on hard times, finding it hard with affording such things as health insurance etc, to experience life as a minority...

Just complete denial, refusal to know how tough it is when you're not priveleged like they believe they are.

typical Republican, no concern or compassion for other people until an issue effects them directly.

i would disagree... in my experience, that is a typical person. i believe that all of us go through life caring about a number of things, but those things are what affect us most deeply. i stand up for LGBT rights, because i am a member of the community. i would like to think that i would do the same regardless, but i do not know. i know that i have issues that i care little about because they do not affect me directly. i consider it a kind of compartmentalization; i could care about everything and get little done or i could care about a few things passionately and work toward those goals.... i dont know just an observation :)

07:58 AM on 03/17/2013
I don't know. I don't believe I have the same problem. I guess we're all wired differently. I've always had the empathy gene. It's not difficult for me to care about others. But I guess I do have difficulty empathizing with those who don't have that gene. They seem like jerks quite often. So, maybe your point is well taken.

THE SON HAD TO WAIT 25 MONTHS FOR PORTMAN TO COME AROUND
--- that must not have been fun

Moreover, that son seems, in every photo, the kind of Gay kid that any caring and observant parent should have figured out many years ago, not someone who would create shock by coming out

hahaha :)
25 months isn't so long a wait when others are ousted, abused, disenfranchised, etc, upon coming out... i'm going on ten years. personally, i'm inspired by the fact that this man was able to go through the emotional and spiritual and mental processes as quickly as he did, and that his opinion has changed as a result.
as for the kind of Gay.... i have only this to ask... what kind of Gay is that? the fact that you say that says that you do not fully understand the idea of not judging someone....

Obama and Hillary have many gay friends, staffers, supporters, voters and they both only recently changed their views on gay marriage. It can take decades.
06:25 PM on 03/16/2013
Not again? Another hypocritical GOPer finds that now the he is PERSONALLY affected by his bigotry and intolerance he has "seen the light" and no longer is against marriage equality! What a surprise that their in tractable ideology is somehow shaken when it's their con, their daughter, their wife or husband affected by their restrictive and exclusionary stands. When will we realize that these immigrants, these black and brown folks, these gay people, these liberals, these progressives, these in favor of choice are also people./ They are people like your son, daughter, wife, husband, or family member. Please keep this "reversal" in the news and use it to point out others who are standing against equality.
04:47 AM on 03/19/2013
You know, sometimes the people who affect the greatest change for a cause are those who stood vehemently against it before but changed their views due to a major personal revelation halfway through. Saul of Tarsus being the most commonly cited example. In the end, it doesn't matter, one more supporter / convert for a good cause is a good thing.

Right.. Sure..
Truth: Portman knew his son was gay for years and still was a bigot.
His son's sexuality was going to be revealed by the press so the bigot decided to suddenly completely reverse his bigotry over night.

If you believe that Portman just figured it all out then you also believe that the cons will suddenly realize that the confederacy lost the war.

I'm glad he's finally 'seen the light,' but it's unfortunate that he could only decide that all people deserve equal rights when it affected his family. Before his own son's happiness was at stake, he could not care less about those who were different from himself. Some of us think those who are 'different, poor, or less fortunate' need equal rights even when we ourselves nor are our family members are gay, Some of us believe in the Golden Rule before it affects our families....

This is a golden opportunity for Republican politicians to LAY OFF social issues and get to work on real problems. No one ever knows what could hit home.
But, if they continue to use social issues to agitate ignorant people to get votes, one by one they'll be voted out of office, which is already happening.
02:14 PM on 03/16/2013
I am very happy that Portman saw the light and reality . I am glad for his son . What a message it is on how he is otherwise so narrow minded and so uninformed that it had to hit home before he understood the issue. Should people keep voting for people who refuse to inform themselves before they take a position on and issue.

In a perfect world the Senator would have been able to compassionately recognize that gays deserve to have the same rights as straight people but that is not the world that we live in. Most of time people, that is MOST of US are unable to support ideas, ideals and differences UNLESS someone that we know and love will be affected by it. I commend Senator Portman for reversing his stance. It is a brave thing to do in the face of a possible wave of backlash from his party.

Lets not be hypocrites and liars. While some people could possibly boast of always accepting gay marriage and rights many of us would be lying if we made such a proclamation at most and practicing self denial at the least.

I know full well that I have not always had the point of view that I have now. I was not raised to hate anyone but I certainly wasn't reared to think that being gay was normal. I must admit though that my mother loved my neighbor who was lesbian and when people made snide comments her response was always the same. I remember when her mother was pregnant with her and I remember when she was born. I loved her then and I love her now. God don't make mistakes and he made her so he must have known what he was doing.

In this world people like Portman keep supporting those that try to take away the civil rights of minorities. If he was sincere about his seeing the light he would change parties.

It is ashamed that you are naive enough to assume that these problems would be resolved with a changing of parties. The Democrats have not been a beacon of perfection and have had a hand in the destruction that is taking place in the US right now.

Nowall we have to do is send republican lawmakers to war and then into poverty. After a day of that ask them how they feel about their pool of disposable soldiers and tax breaks for the rich.
