I kinda hate to comment as its so awfulm but war is what it is

"solid state laser" does sound radical

say 1k hp ship engines can make lottsa electricity if they pass on propulsion for a minute or so

accuracy is a no brainer - no ballistics BS

The brits I hear had a system yonks ago that relied on blinding oncoming pilots - no good for missiles tho i imagine

Could be a combined approach - lon g range laser for aiming & an antimissile missile & maybe some satellite input?

power means nothing if u miss the target - these are dead accurate - like hitting the slot in a pillbox every time

Using lasers to blind anyone including enemy pilots or troops, is a violation of the Geneva convention. Protocol IV on Blinding Laser Weapons prohibits the use of laser weapons specifically designed to cause permanent blindness. The High Contracting Parties shall not transfer such weapons to any State or non-State entity.

glad to hear it

nasty stuff

geneva conventions not written in stone tho - doubt any combatant fully adhered in ww2

fact remains - blinding a pilot is an easy option for laser

How long before Obama takes credit for the laser weapon.

Yes it costs less than $1 to use and the cost of a mirror to defend against.

Sure, it will only cost $1 per shot.
Too bad we'll have spent a trillion dollars or more trying to come up with the technology.
And, of course, assuming that it works, unlike the last "laser" weapon we tried to create (right, Reagan's ghost?).
Knowing our tendencies, however, something tells me that this naval weapon will somehow be extremely vulnerable to water, which will cause it to not fire, and any contact with salt will cause it to self-destruct.

With any luck it won't work right Marc? And the US will once and for all be defeated. Right Marc?

Be defeated by whom?
China, and their one aircraft carrier that can't stand up to any planes landing on it?
Stop being ridiculous, and start realizing that with just our Air Force and our actual human soldiers with the weapons they carry, there is no military force on the planet that could possibly conduct a successful campaign against this nation, so perhaps we should stop bankrupting ourselves with massively excessive military spending, since that, and no foreign military, is the biggest threat we face.

My taxes at work.Weapons like this are just one of the reasons we pay taxes and should be glad to do so.Nothing is free folks.Rich people ought to be happier then poor people to pay their share. They have the most to lose.
06:12 PM on 04/09/2013
So true. If we get sucked into WW3 count on massive money printing and complete dilution of the US dollar, which would be like a straight up tax on all currency holders.

I am so grateful that so much energy and money has been spent on lazers. Poverty is no big deal. Let's tackle more efficient ways of killing people. Because we are so advanced. Disgraceful. Let's just fling our own pooh at each other.

Yes, because the medical, industrial and commercial uses that we have already implemented were such wastes of time... This is simple evolution of military applications from laser tracking and laser targeting.

An "outbreak of peace" would not last long. We are already feeling the effects of global warming, it is only going to get worse. Much worse. We will have to use weapons like these to fight our way to a still livable part of the world as the biosphere turns hostile -- and to keep out people who were hit harder first and turn to war even before we do.

(inspired to write on July 10, 1968)

The president of the United States will conceive of a device contrary to the hopes of the nation. Expert manipulation can't forever hold the reign on the foreign element. The nature of the trigger controlled (contra voileance?} creeps into the realm of the elite. Considerable stretching of Truth will take place. Intolerable methods will affix themselves on the whole. Seclusion out of fear. Concordance has the upper hope. Violence erupts the world.” Drones and now lasers. We surely will be afraid to come out of our homes once these weapons get in the hands of the wrong people.
