In High School I was hit by the same pitcher five times in three seasons. Everytime I faced him, he hit me. My parents filed a complaint with his school's and our league AD. When we met for the first game, during our Junior year, he hit me in middle of my back with a fastball, I charged the mound and once the fight was broken up between our teams, he had a bloody nose, courtesy of me, and a broken arm, courtesy of one of his teammates who tried to kick me, missed and kicked him. Long story short, accidents happen but patterns are easy to spot. Greinke should expect to take a charge from someone he hit repeatedly and then gives lip-service to. No sympathy to the Dodger whiners on this. Your man got the short end of the stick.

Bingo! The game of strikes.

Greinke might have a history of hitting him (3 times over 5 years though), but Quentin leads the league in getting hit almost every year. That is more of an issue with Quentin crowding the plate and diving over the plate when he swings more so than simply Greinke is trying to hit him. He needs to be suspended 15 games.

I have always been baffled about this "crowding the plate" myth. The strike zone is any ball that is thrown over the plate, that is reasonably located between the hitter's knees and belt line. Give or take a few inches either way. When I looked at the clip, Quentin is clearly not crowding the plate. You can still see the batter's box lines, plus that pitch was way high, and well out of the strike zone and took a path towards Quentin's body once it was thrown.

Can't stand guys who stand on top of the plate, get plunked often because of it, and then get pissed BECAUSE THEY GOT HIT BY A PITCH! They know it's gonna happen, both because they are closer to the plate and because pitchers have to push them off a bit because they are sticking their noses out over the plate. Not to mention, if Quentin thinks it was on purpose, maybe he should be pissed at his own pitcher for throwing at Kemp's head! If it was on purpose, it was justified and Quentin should be thankful it was on the arm and not in his ear.

Nice to see backup catcher John Baker making fun of an injured player. A lot of class coming from a guy that hardly sees the field and is career no body. San Diego in general breeds nobodies on a regular basis.

Carlos should followed up that shoulder bump with a left hook. Let this be a message to any other pitcher who "accidently" hits Quentin with a pitch, be prepared to fight. Greinke earned that broken collarbone. He's gonna have a lot of time to think about that pitch and if it was worth getting his collarbone broke over it.
01:18 PM on 04/12/2013
My guess, and it is only a guess, is that if the pitch is ruled intentional, Carlos will regret it. If the league doesn't take action, one of Greinke's teammates may take aim at his head.

I've heard pitchers complain that there is an "unwritten rule" that you can't throw "inside" to Stars. The Big Stars will then "lean in" and turn the outside corner into a "sweet spot" and rack up the extra base hits.

Simple to quell this. You come out of the dugout and fight you're suspended for 5, or 10, or how many games. The NBA put this in for players coming off the bench during a fight and it works. However the NBA has a intelligent commissioner with b*lls, while MLB has one who is scared - of both the owners and the player's union. Baseball hasn't had a commissioner since Giamatti.

Greinke can hit 95-96 mph with his fastball. If he wanted to hit Quentin, it would've been with the hard straight stuff, not anything off-speed.

not really. it's easier to defend "the pitch got away from me" with off speed. pitchers never want to take credit for hitting a guy.

Fastballs get away from guys too, it's not uncommon. And pitchers protect teammates all the time, they'll own up to it if they are.

Dodgers, Padres Brawl: Normally lots of action in baseball, but resulting in only some dust to brush off. However in the case of injury, injury so severe to pull a player from the game, why shouldn't the offender also be banished until the injured can return. This would have major impact on football. Especially, those teams with cash rewards for injury on special offensive key players such as QBs, their receivers and running backs.

I don't know if HP can get a copy of this, but if they can I think it would be highly successful on the front page. He's amazing.
Here's the YouTube version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDwbjHV8jLo
The guy is Norwegian. His name is Havard Rugland. And he just signed a contract with the Detroit Lions.
